Root ROOTING For Dummies

Well I know it speaks of a possible problem with updating. Just asking.

Yep, that can definitely be a problem, but there are a few ways to avoid issues:

1) never accept an OTA while rooted. Sometimes in looks for certain packages, but you shouldn't be doing these kind of updates while the phone is rooted anyway.
2) by just moving apps, if anything ever looks for them, you can just copy them back (with root explorer, of course).

That being said, just freeze apps just titanium backup. It's safer. Of course, you could also flash a custom rom with most of the bloatware already removed.

Wrapkgb:

In the directions at the beginning. It advises freezing stock apps rather than deleting them. What do you say?

Its all preference... I delete them for a couple of reasons. If I don't want to app now, I'm not gonna want it later, and I don't use titanium back-up so I don't want to pay six bucks just to freeze some apps. Either way of doing it is no better than the other. And if you do delete and for whatever reason you want them back, you can simply wipe cache and dalvik and then reflash the rom and all of the apps will be back.

I'm not bold enough to be flashing anything at this point (pun intended). :) Also titanium backup is the same as nandroid backup right? It includes it right? I read that some where I believe. I did use titanium back up.

No. Titanium backs up your apps and data, where a nandroid backs up your comlete system.

Yeah, I thought you would have problems doing it that way. Did you read the instructions in the OP (Section 5 under "after rooting"? You need to get the proper PC36IMG.zip for your hboot, copy it to the root of your sdcard, then flash it from hboot.

Can you provide a link to the proper pc36img.zip for the evo 3.70 i would really appreciate it

Okay man i appreciate it. One last question do i need to turn the s-off and will this officially unroot my phone an make s-off?

Unrevoked sets s-off lower than hboot. Before you attempt to flash the pc36img.zip file, you must flash the unrevoked s-on tool, first. Keep doing it until you see s-on in hboot. Once it says s-on, you can flash the pc36img.zip file. Your phone will then be completely unrooted.

just nuke the process and start over you won't affect anything unless your phone is going through the reboot process.

Actually Ookami...I did that over and over lol but I kept it going in the background while I did some other stuff so it took about..2 and a half hours? and it finally rebooted, said it was doing recovery and all that, and now it's rooted :D I'm actually using it's wifi tether as we speak!!

Thanks for the help though, much appreciated. I've got this now.

i unrooted my htc evo using the guide but my recovery still says clockwork and my security is back on can someone help me

if you do exactly what the un rooting guide tell's you to do you should not have any problems. Just download the image file, throw it on your sd card should be named pc3.......zip go. dont unzip the folder on your computer just put it straight on the sd card. then to to hboot an it should read your sd card an see that you have that update on there an start reading it an then ask to update say yes. and let it do its thing. i didnt even have to go into recovery

did it today
good luck

I had to get my speaker fixed it took 15 min.

Wow, was all set to root via instructions in post#1
Sorry if this is a repeat, but I have a macbook and the mac version on unrevolked requires you to basiclly do nothing but download and watch!! could not be easier!
Not that I want to, but if I ever need to return to stock (for service etc...) is the mac version different than in post one?
Thanks everyone & matlock for your help here!!!

First of all...THANK YOU!! I am a total newbie to androids and this guide rocks. Followed instructions to the T and bang- S-OFF.

Just a few questions (please forgive my ignorance):
How do i get the programs I saved to the SD card?
Is there a free way to freeze programs? I would rather not spend 5+ dollars on titanium backup...and would rather not delete the files per the awesome guide

thanks!!!
