If you download CyanogenMod from ROM Manager, it will ask if you want to download the GApps as well.
But you can also download them from the CyanogenMod forums. Remember to pick the correct GApps pack, if you download from the Forums. There will be a list though. The EVO 4G GApps are HDPI.

Flashing the CyanogenMod is just like flashing any other ROM. Refer to the guide. And use the Manual Method.
(ClockworkMod only at the moment with flashing ROMs; soon I will have a how-to for Amon_RA aswell)

I don't use Titanium Backup personally, since I go from ROM to ROM, which can cause instabilities if you Restore apps from one ROM to another. (My personal opinion. The verdict is still out on that)

I did happen to use App List Backup I have listed in the guide, when I switched to CM7. And it worked pretty well. You do still have to go through and download them all manually. But at least you do not have to search for them all over again. Not to mention, you can go "Hmm.. I didn't really use that App.." or "I didn't like that App..".

I screwed myself when I tried to use Market Updater; which makes all the downloaded Market Apps with the Auto Update feature, checked. It basically deleted all of my apps from the market I downloaded. So I gotta re-download all of them for me to be able to get notifications for updates/auto updates.

Ok so it sounds as though I did it exactly they way you would have with the App List Backup, and pretty much found apps I didn't use and didn't re download. I just went through my list of backed up apps and searched for them again.

I think I will give the cyanogen mod a try tonight. So is it better to just do the manual method rather than ROM manager? I looked in there (ROM mngr) and it had all of the cyanogen mods listed. Thanks again for the info, this site is great. Learning a bunch.

This is like what akazabam and myself have been discussing.

ROM Manager is exactly what it's name is.. a ROM Manager.. It shouldn't really do any more than let you download ROMs.
For some reason (probably incompatibilities is Recovery and Applications) ROM Manager likes to hiccup on random spots when it is trying to Operate ClockworkMod in Recovery.

That being said..
Always boot into Recovery for a Manual method like ClockworkMod or Amon_RA when you want to do any kind of Flashing or Backups.
(More on this will be added to the Guide soon.)

But yes, you can go ahead and download CyanogenMod and the GApps from ROM Manager. When you go to flash the ROM/GApps from Recovery.. You'll need to flash the zip file which is a .team.douche. folder under ClockworkMod folder.

How do you check to make sure it matches the file you downloaded to verify it is not corrupt?

Sounds good. I will have to give the CyanogenMod a try tonight, not going to attempt to download it with my 3g speed. Would much rather use my Wifi at home. I will read around some more on the steps to flash CyanogenMod and the google apps. Thanks.
 
I wanted to say thank you Matlock for making this tutorial. I finally decided to jump and root my phone. Your tutorial was smooth as butter.

Now to figure out what I want to do with my phone since im new to the whole root scene.

I do have a question though.

When I did my back up via the manual and rom manager methods, obviously it saves the file to the SD card. Since I already have a backup of my phone from the beginning of your guide on rooting, how often do I need to make a backup? It seems as though each back up can take a nice size of memory space on the SD card.

Can I just wipe and load different roms until I find something I like knowing that I have the safety net of having those original backups on file?

How do I know if I need to update my radio for the cyanogenmod? That is one of the steps before flashing. My radio is 2.15.00.07.28.


I couldn't find anything in the cyanogenmod forums. Currently looking in this forum and xda development forums for answer.

It depends on what version of Android they are using.
I am pretty sure you'll be using CyanogenMod 6.1.2.. So lets see..

Ok so I need to upgrade to the version that is in red prior to flashing cm6? If so I can't seem to find anything about upgrading the radios, ie where to get them and how to do them. Only thing I have found is that you have to be careful not to upgrade to the wrong one.

I have found some stuff here, no time to read right now...I will read more later tonight.

Also read SECTION 6: UPDATING TO THE LATEST OTA under AFTER ROOTING. It'll tell you how to FLASH the Radios you need.
 
I posted the below information in the Root section for EVO 4G, but since I used this guide and all this information so far, I decided I will post in here as well in regards to advice on a ROM for a rooting noobie.

I wanted to see if I could get some advice/suggestions on a custom rom that I should try after rooting my phone last night.

In the midst of all this beginning rooting stuff, I am still trying to better understand Kernels and what they can do for me.

Right now I would like to try and find a rom that get's rid of pretty much all of the Sprint Bloatware (I would like to keep the GPS.) I want to keep the google apps and market. I do not need the stock things like the mail as I will use the gmail app for that and the Handcent for the SMS/texting.

I would like to have increased battery life on my phone. I don't talk on it much, probable due more data type things (ie. Surfing, texting, instant messaging via Trillian or IM+.)

I use a few widgets (ie. Palmonary Weather, Pandora, Power Amp, Beautiful Toggle Widgets.)

I also use Launcher Pro, mostly for 2 reasons:
1: I like how I can just hold down on a widget/shortcut and resize it. With ADW, it is a bit more of a pain trying to figure out the right number calculation when adding a widget to have it fill the screen the way I want without being able to hold and resize.

2: I love the scrollable dock that allows me to put 15 shortcuts on the dock.

Since I am new at this, I would like to use a ROM that is very much stable as I am not at a point yet in my rooting career to use beta/alpha ROM's and try to figure out things when something crashes.

Eventually too I would like to use some sort of custom boot up image/sound, but I will get into that after I figure out the ROM stuff.

What is your baseband (radio) version? It says in hboot (below where it says s-on). You already have s-on, so no need to run the s-on tool. Question, though - Did you ever have full root and a custom ROM? What version of unrevoked did you use in the first place? That's a pretty old hboot. If you did have full root before, and want to wipe everything out, I'll give you the link to the correct PC36IMG. I just need to know which radio version you have (More than one OTA used that hboot version).

Thanks for the reply. All I did was run unrevoked when I got my EVO in June/July, so it was definitely an early version. I never loaded any custom ROM, and I didn't do anything to do a full root (I just ran unrevoked).

So, it sounds like you you're still on Android 2.1 and used the one click unrevoked method that you run right from your phone. Is that correct? If so, just uninstall superuser and unrevoked. You already have s-on, and I don't see how you'd have a custom recovery at this point. Check by going back to hboot and selecting the recovery options. If you do have a custom recovery (you'd have to have run one of the later versions of unrevoked, which I don't think you did), then you can flash this PC36IMG.zip:

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Follow the instructions in the OP to flash it (rename it, first, of course, to PC36IMG.zip).
 
I downloaded the CyanongenMod and the gapps from ROM Manager, however I can't find where it saves it on the SD card so that I can do it manually instead of using ROM manager to do it, like you suggested. I was able to find gapps.zip but not the CM6 mod. Will I have to download it from xda or cyanogen websites and save to root of sd card? Going to tackle this and the radio flashing tomorrow because I am falling asleep and don't think it would be a good idea to do this while half asleep.;)

I am all ready to flash new radio's. I guess the combo would be the best thing to do. Thanks for the link.
 
so a question on backups. I am currently running myn's 2.2 rls5 and if i want to do a nand backup should it be done by rom manager or manually? i ask because i like the fact that i can name my nand. also what about the other way, if i want to go to a previous nand?
 
Has anyone here flashed the rom evio2? I did and its causing trouble with my GPS- just says searching for location- works sporadically? anyone have similar experience? any solutions? I really like the rom and would love to keep it but nee functional GPS

Which evio are you running? I'm on 1.7.6 and have no issues...even though I don't use it much. Just tried it at home and it was right on my star.

3) I guess not, since I'm not really sure what gapps is. All I did was wipe the data, wipe the cache, flash the ROM and reboot. I do see that it Beta 4 says gapps was moved to an add on pack. I don't see a download for it, though.

Have you wiped data/cache/dalvik and tried again? Gapps is basically the the Google apps (the market, etc.). It's usually a separate package with AOSP ROMs. I asked if you flashed it in the same recovery session because it tends to cause the phone to not boot when flashed right after like that. If you didn't flash it, though, that's not the problem.

GApps is a zip of the latest Google Applications (GMail, Market, ext.)
You can find them from the Developers Site/Thread. Or download them from ROM Manager when you download the ROM (if available)
 
Not having any luck finding the GApps on XDA. I would ask, but I changed my email address and have temporarily lost my posting privileges. :rolleyes:

What does AOSP stand for, anyway?

It's in the thread you got the beta from:

[ROM-DEV] Stock Gingerbread beta 4 - xda-developers

Look under downloads, and you'll see the beta and gapps. Flash it separately (boot up after flashing the rom, assuming you got it to work, then flash gapps from recovery.)

AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. It's basically stock android directly from Google source. It has none of HTC's modifications to it, which is why not everything (4g fully or hdmi) work yet.
