Root ROOTING For Dummies

Hi, I'm new to this. I've been around smart phone though. I jail broke my iphone so
I know a little. However, my problem starts with trying to unrevoked my HTC EVO 4g. I have downloaded the unrevoked modified driver and made sure it shows in my device manager as stated. I'm using Windows by the way. I then downloaded Unrevoked3 and went through turn off phone holding the power button down and the volume button at the same time then run the hboot, after, I connect my phone to my pc and click on the reflash file and it starts, but I get stuck at Installing unrevoked3 Service, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong & what I should do? Thanks.

Hmm...Honestly I'm not real sure. Did you make sure usb debugging was checked? Did you uninstall HTC sync? Did you start at step one of the guide with prerooting and go step by step? Make sure you don't skip anything. If you did all that I would say uninstall everything and start over again from scratch. Be sure to reboot machine after uninstallation. If you follow that guide step by step you really "shouldn't" have any problems.

Yes, I did all the things you suggested. However, when I went into the device manager where it shows Android 1.0 under that I deleted the
drivers by mistake even for the Android 1.0, so it won't let me install
anything under the Android 1.0 in Device manager and it also states
there's no drivers for it also. I looked everywhere for these drivers to put them back and I can't find them. At this point, I decided to run the reflash package of unrevoked3 and it went through the process but got to the end and have me stuck at waiting for system to setlle, can you help me with getting the driver back under device Manager Android 1.0, and to get off of the Waiting for system to settle in unrevoked3?

I'm pretty sure its linked in the op. The drivers that is.

EDIT: Link

Matlock,

You might add to your guide an app called appbrain. It can be used instead of the one you have in step 3 (app list backup). Not sure if you've used it but it's just a step below TB and free. I use it when I don't have root access to TB so that I can sync my apps to an online account. I actually download it and use it before doing the factory reset (step 1) so that I can just download that app after rooting and sync my apps back to my phone and download them. It's a pretty good app, I'm sure you've heard of it. Just might be worth mentioning in the OP, because it keeps you from actually going to the market and typing in all the names of your apps.

Just my 2 cents, thanks again for the guide. Successfully rooted my wife's evo tonight in about 20 minutes. :D

Appbrain works great but he also mentioned somewhere in the earlier part of this thread an app called app list backup that also works very nicely.

Yeah, I referred to it in my post and have used both. The only thing I didn't like about app list backup is that it's just that, a list, you still have to go to the market and search for them (unless of course I didn't use it right). With appbrain you can actually hit the download button within the app and it takes you to the market to download it. And with wifi you can download your entire list of apps at the same time and pretty quickly. I use TB once I have root and have bought the pro version of it so that's how I restore my apps now. And I use it quite often because I'm a flashaholic.:D

To each his own as they say, I just found appbrain easier and more convenient. I didn't like going back to the market and typing in all my apps again.

I guess I had a brain fart, I totally glazed over your comment about ALB in your original post:) Sorry about that.

Hi. So I rooted my EVO 4G with unrevoked3 and all went well except when I try to load a new widget I get an error that HTC Sense (process.com.htc.launcher) is stopped. Not sure why. I did follow the bloatware freeze list in the posting. I noticed it when the weather widget stopped updating my location. I tried downloading a different weather widget from the market and get the same message. Ideas??
Thanks.

Jay

What all have you frozen? Try this.

EDIT: Just defrost everything and go one at a time and see which one is doing it.

I tried what was in the link. It has been "Loading...it may take several minutes to complete.." for 9 minutes now.

I used the list in the post and just froze those in the list like the Sprint ones - any I had doubts about I left alone.

Well I would say once it's up and running to just defrost everything and see if you still get the force close and if not then start one at a time and see which one does it.

Hmmm..Battery pull? Not sure on that one. Had you made any kind of backup after rooting? Section 3?

Can you hold down the power key and try to reboot?

I can reboot into recovery - is that what you mean? Tried battery pull x3. Do have backup. It is weird. If I get an email I can pull down the notification bar and open the mail. Just can't get home screen loaded. Is there a way to install another loader via my pc and the sd card?

I figured out it was SetCPU settings. I use settings others use and have posted and not sure why it acted up now but all is back and running.

That was going to be my next suggestion. What kernel are you using? Be sure when you set an overclock that you don't check the set on boot box until you know for sure it's running ok. Did you actually flash a ROM?

BTW Happy you figured it out.

Awesome. Everyone is doing extremely well helping each other out. Kudos everyone.

Using stock. did not change ROM or kernel yet. Was just under-clocking when screen blank etc.

Did you get this working? If you follow that guide from start to finish you should have no problems whatsoever. Let me know if you got it or not and I will try to help out as much as possible.

LOL. I have a G-tab also that I did. This phone is from work so a little leary of going too far with something that is not mine.

Yeah don't blame you there, but you could just make a nandroid of you "stock" setup and then flash a different ROM and always go back "stock" if you needed to. That's the beauty of it all. Wish I had a job that would buy me an Evo. ;)

ok so having a big problem here. i have my evo rooted and im trying to root one of my co-workers right now. he has a mac osx. i followed the rooting for dummies guide except for a few steps that arent needed for macs. however when running unrevoked 3 it says failed to flash recovery image. i have no idea whats wrong. its easy to do on a pc, but on a mac it's confusing, could someone give me some help please
Sorry I have not checked this thread in a while. I know your issue is fixed, but for future reference... rooting on a mac could not be easier. Plug in the evo, launch the downloaded unrevolked... sit back and watch... thats it... 3 or so minutes later your rooted..the mac osx does it all
