Root Rooting the Fascinate Regardless of OS Version

Here's what I had to do to get the update.zip to flash. Maybe Justin or Saps can explain why it worked and help me flesh out my instructions. I had OTA'd DL09 and the phone would NOT reboot after Odin, it would just go black.

Download a non-stock kernel and place in the root directory of your sdcard (do not rename to update.zip).

10) SKIP OP INSTRUCTIONS! If the phone reboots normally, the update.zip won't take.
10a) Unplug the USB cable.
10b) while holding power button and both volume rockers, insert the battery. Phone should power on into recovery.
11) Same as OP instructions.
11a) Using CWR, select and apply the kernel zip. Now you should be safe to reboot normally and can get back into cwr.

1.) Install the Samsung Drivers
2.) Place Odin3 v1.3.exe and CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5 in the same folder on your pc
3.) Place the update.zip and su-2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip in the root of your sdcard (root means not in any folder just on the sdcard)
4.) Put your phone in download mode by taking out the battery. Then hold the volume down button while plugging it into the usb cable attached to your computer
5.) Open Odin
6.) This is very very important ***Don

If you get the update.zip error it's just because it didn't take it properly from the odin/pda part.

yea that's right. You need to boot straight to cwm and apply the update.zip. If you boot the phone.. then reboot into cwm it will over-write the thing and give the verification error I believe.

OK. I know I'm very dense about this stuff....So are the instructions in the first post still accurate as far as which files to use? Also, the only thing I'd lose is haptic feedback? Thanks for the help.

Yes the instructions are for getting the phone setup for cwm. If you do the DL30 package then you won't lose haptic feedback it has a built in kernel. If you are on Dl09 and you flash a di01 kernel you will lose feedback. You have to have a kernel that matches yours to keep feedback working.

And a FYI I don't remove my battery to got to download mode. (step 4) I just turn the phone off then hold down the volume and plug the usb in.

So,Noob question here:
I can't find it outright anywhere, but see it as implied. Just to confirm, when doing all this stuff, I won't lose the data and whatnot I have on my phone, correct?

Also, If I already have an SD card in my phone with other files on it, should I use a different one for this process, as well as for other processes (installing DL30)?

Thanks.

I just used this method to root two fascinates on DL09. I am about to use Odin to get back to stock. Can I use this method while on D101 to root?

Okay, I'm at my wits end....I followed the instructions --- got to installing the update.zip. But when I do - I get:

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, went back in the thread and see this was a prob for others. I've grabbed a kernel from xda. So my question...when do I apply the kernel?

edit: I CAN flash clockworkmod recover in RomManager. Could I just install from sd card w/ rom manager and flash su.2.3.6.1+busybox1.19.zip right there? Would that work?

Did you push clockwork through odin? If you didn't rom manager will take you to samsung recovery.

I pushed it through odin twice just to be sure -- but when I tired to flash update.zip in stock recovery, it would give me the error:

"E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted."

Earlier, I tried to flash cwm in Rom Manager, and it said it couldn't. But for grins, I tried once more. Now it says successful. Should I just reboot into recover and see if it takes me to stock or cwm?

Yea I didn't realize you hadn't pushed twice through rom manager. Sometimes it takes 3 times even. I would do three button to get into recovery and get used to that way. Rom manager has problems every now and then so its good to get used to not using it. Glad you got it now though :)

First davidnmegan -- thanks for the help...so I tried to reboot into recovery from rom manager to see...it just sits there.

And when I manually boot into recovery --- it just takes me to stock recovery and the update.zip doesn't go through...

ugh...this was so much easier with z4 before the ota. (and easier on my DX lol )

I just need to get root back to get titanium and wireless tether back, but a custom kernel might not hurt either.

I know this may sound like a dumb question but you did choose fascinate in rom manager didn't you?

This is only for the Verizon Samsung Fascinate do not use for any other phone

As always myself, android forums and anyone else are not responsible for what you do to your phone.

This instructions are for windows only at this point. I may put together instructions for linux later on

That being said if you don
