Root Rooting the Fascinate Regardless of OS Version

Another application that you might use a lot is Root Explorer. But that one costs a few $$.

I'm concerned about the error messages you're getting though. I remember getting a handful of those messages myself with Titanium Backup after I rooted.

When you open Titanium Backup. On the bottom is a button "Problems?". When you click on it, it'll open a pop-up box asking you to install a new version of busybox. Click the "Yes, Do It" button on the pop-up box. Let it do it's thing, and then after that you should be golden.

How long should installing update.zip take?

I have never rooted with this method before, but I am rooting a family member's fascinate that is on DL09, so I decided to go this route. When I applied the update.zip, it shows the progress bar for a second and then it stops part way and shows a triangle with an exclamation point and the android guy.

Any thoughts on what is going on?

Also, it says it failed to validate whole-file signature when i go back to the recovery screen.

Re-downloaded the update.zip and busybox from this thread, and attempted again. Nothing.

EDIT: I just realized this was covered in the thread already.....man am I an idiot.

After working on rooting a fascinate with this new method and the instructions here and on XDA, I can not get it to work. I have plenty of experience with rooting etc with my fascinate, but this new DL09 update has made rooting unbearable. I spent over 2 hours and couldn't get update.zip applied.

I will not see my sister until next week, so I'll have to wait until then to try again. Question: I pushed the .tar.md5 file via Odin, but that was all I could do. Her phone seems fine. Will it affect her in anyway? Or do I need to go and undo that some how?

Thanks!

Assuming her phone booted back up fine....then she ll be ok. :)

What version of cwr were you pushing in odin?

Also remember that dl09 is a pita with cwr so have a kernel on her sdcard ahead of time....so after odin resets and the phone reboots....go into rom manager, flash recovery twice....then hit reboot into recovery and it should go through....then flash a kernel otherwise cwr will be replaced on the next boot by stock recovery

I used everything from here: Modified CWMrecovery for Odin (DJ05/DL09) Plus new root instructions (Updated 1/15) - xda-developers
And followed the direction in the OP of this thread.

I pushed that CWM file through Odin.

Rebooted.

Then shut down and rebooted into stock recovery. Tried applying update, and could not get past that step. Next I was going to flash superuser and busybox combo zip.

So, if I am reaidng your instructions correctly, I am to follow the first step and push the file through Odin, then when the phone boots up I should install (super user?) and rom manager, then go into rom manager, flash recovery twice, reboot into recovery and then flash the kernel? (i had the kernel on the root in anticipation for this step, but never got this far).

Sorry, this is waaaaaay different than how I rooted my fascinate. I was going crazy! I am sure everything is spelled out properly, I am just interpreting a direction wrong.

yeah it sounds like you skipped the "flash clockwork recovery" step from rom manager...if you had pushed red recovery (voodoo) it wouldnt have been neccessary...but for green recovery it still has to be flashed in rom manager

Peter, it looks like the problem you're having is that you're rebooting as soon as you push CWM through odin. You can't do this as the first boot into the OS the Samsung kernel kills CWM.

You have to make sure after you push CWM via odin to boot straight into recovery. I know my phone never actually "rebooted" after odin tried to reboot it until my battery was in the phone. So I made sure to hold the volume up and down buttons and power button all before i put the battery back in. Then the phone booted directly into Odin, I pushed the update.zip fine, then flashed a new kernel immediately.

HTH

Perfect. Thank you. I will try this as soon as I can.

Nwb here and after reading over plenty of forums im starting to get the big picture. so let me make sure i got it right. (get ready for alot of dumb questions)

First off DL09? i believe it is the last update i recieved which froze my phone and i was forced to do a factory reset loosing my root. (Z4)
im realizing that Z4 will not work now which is okay with me cause after nitsuj has so many times let me know i need to step out from the one click rooting so im gonna try.
So i installed oDin on my PC and im going to "push" cwm on my Fascinate, (if im understanding correctly Odin is just the tool used for flashing roms?) but everyone keeps saying something about "Download mode"?? im assuming this isnt the same as "recovery mode"? if not please let me know how to access it.

and im starting to realize that CWM doesnt seem so scary. From what im getting its a after market recovery utility used to reboot recover and finish flashing?
sry just recapping making sure im on the right track thanks guys.

okay i finally figured out to hold volume "down" down instead of everything. so i got odin and flashed the wrong version of CWMR... im an idiot. SO my question is do you flash OVER something or do you have to unflash? sry im getting there..

What do you mean you flashed the wrong one?

maybe im lost... from what i gathered the clockworkrecovery zip we use with odin at the beginning of this forum was wrong and were trying the one from xda developers?
im sorry this is all very new.

The old version of cwr is ok...but the new one is preferable...assuming you are on dl09 ota you ll need to do one extra thing with cwr....make sure you have a custom kernel on your sdcard before booting into cwr for the first time...one you boot in, you ll need to flash the kernel otherwise cwr will be replaced with stock recovery on the next boot

okay im ready to try it recap one more time.
ODIN push CWMR in DL mode... it reboots
go into rom manager flash cwm twice? then on the reboot go to recovery
if it doesnt go to cwmr just tab down to update zip and it should put me in CWMR.
from there select the kernal i want to use, flash it using CWMR and if all goes well... happyness?
is there a way to make a back up of my stock self now before i proceede?

stear clear from voodoo for a bit but whats the best basic kernals to get me started withb decent battery life. the only thing that intruiges me is OCing but the fascinate is already so ballin idk if it would make that big of a difference. thoughts?
update:
in the mean time i pushed cwmr through but now my phone wont vibrate... is that a bad thing?

Quick question: Do steps 5 through 20 all happen with the battery removed from the phone?

I assume the phone is in a low power mode even if you power it off as long as the battery's still in?

Ok what do we do between steps 9 - 10? My phone will not reboot without the battery in

Ok what do we do between steps 9 - 10? My phone will not reboot without the battery in but will not go into the correct menu when I install the battery. I've been able to get into the menu and follow all steps but I still show DI01.????!?!!!!??!!
PM answered reply back via PM it'll be easier ;) :D

i used to be rooted, using the one click on android central, but returned to 100% stock when i got the DL09 OTA, i changed my mind and did not update to the DL09 OTA, can i still use THIS root tho? i see the root says DJ05/DL09....but in the title it says regardless of OS.. the one on android ventral is not working on my phone any more when i use it. im still running DI01

Yeah it will work for ya.

i guess one more question. after this, i see that 2.2 is leaked for us now. i wanna go ahead and do that...should i update to DJ05 first, and then update to 2.2?

...i want the GPS and all to be fixed. or will just upgrading to 2.2 fix the GPS and all the other problems DI01 has?

**also since im going to be putting 2.2 on, should i use this version of CMW when i root? or should i just use the newer version for 2.2 at this point?

you can go right from dio1 to 2.2...just make sure to have the dl09/dj05 radio as well and gps will be fine....you need some form of cwr installed to install the new cwr as its an update.zip

And even though the "new" cwm is the some old looking green 2.5.1.0 its not the same old green. So it has to be flashed on after the rom. Unless you have the package where they are integrated

So any fix yet? I can't get past the update.zip point either. I have tried unchecking usb debugging and tried to redownload both items and no luck.
