Root Rooting the Fascinate Regardless of OS Version

Ive used the file several times as well as some other people in the irc. Not sure why it wouldnt be working for people.

anyone who is having problems can try this file http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/CWMRecovery_DL09.tar.md5 in odin instead of the one linked. Adryn made this as well but like the old one it flashes a kernel but at least its a DL09 kernel instead of a di01 kernel.

omj did you update this with the newer file adryn posted?

Just tried this file...no luck unfortunately...still get the exclamation point and android guy after i select the update.zip and hit home.

progress goes about a quarters of the way and then I get the visual error warning

Try the one I posted over at xda you'll have to install a new kernel to get your haptic feebdack back which isn't the easiest to understand but put it on your SD card and install in CW that is what I done

This might sound incredibly simple, but I noticed on mine, after flashing the DL09.tar in Odin, the update UNCHECKED the USB Debugging option under Applications... I got the triangle warning a couple times (reflashed in Odin and tried to install CWM) but until rebooted normally, and double checked that USB Debug setting, it was no go. I rechecked it, re-flashed in Odin, and it took CWM Recovery the very next go round.

Might be something to check out! ;)

Success usin the old xda file!! Thanks everybody!
I got a warning on reboot about android voice search not responding...I hit wait instead of force close...everything seems ok for now.

I dont use haptic feedback anyway so its no big deal for me.

This is my first time rooting using CW, Odin , holding down vol. buttons---etc...im the newb that used the z4 root. This wasnt that bad thanks to this great community. Thanks again!

Now on to JTs superclean ROM...another first for me! :D

First casualty seems that I have lost all vibe, not just haptic feedback...I understand its the result of a kernel being flashed?

EDIT: AND BT wont turn on.

I think I need a new kernel..

I'm really at a loss b/c of my newb status :(
WIll JTs new supahclean be a good thing to flash in order to fix these things?
Everyone was once a newb ;)
Now are you on DL09 or DJ05? You mentioned jt's superclean above which is DJ05 but adrynalyne also has a superclean DL09. It makes a small difference. Not for the kernels since they are interchangeable between DJ05 and DL09, but themes and stuff. As log as you have a DJ05/DL09 kernel you will be ok. But for clarity's sake please inform if your build is DJ05 or DL09

Thanks for the quick response! Yeah, I'm finally getting the terminology of android and really enjoying tinkering, but want to do it right so I have a fully functional phone.

Im on the DL09 OTA and, my mistake, I actually meant to say adrynalyne's DL09 superclean, not JT.

EDIT: and I used the file from this thread which finally worked in rooting my phone.

Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers
Cool, yeah its easy to confuse since superclean was jt's brand name term but adrynalyne bought the rights to the trademark name for $1000 in monopoly money so its all good now :p:D.
OK so rooted and DL09 as long as you got clockwork you can pretty much take your pic from the kernels here http://androidforums.com/fascinate-all-things-root/235766-one-stop-shopping-sf-kernels.html

So installing adrynalyne's super clean wont come with its own kernel that will fix my issues?

And, I guess if the answer is no to that, then one of the kenels from your kernel thread will overwrite the kernel I have?

I guess I just want a simple kernel that wont have issues. :)

Correct, superclean is kernel less on purpose. So yes just pick on from the above linked thread. But sure you under the difference between voodoo and non voodoo if you go with voodoo. If its at all confusing start with non voodoo

Ok thanks. Yeah right now I'm not touching voodoo kernels with a 10' pole...definitely not there yet knowledge wise in case issues arise :o

I'm assuming I cant go back to a "stock" kernel and stay rooted.
I just want a kernel that's stable and wont cause issues that has me in a jam during the day while at work, etc. nothing fancy.

I've looked at the thread and the comments and cant really decide which one is a newb kernel :D

any suggestions?

Try imnuts 1/15 nonvoodoo with whatever voltage you think you can handle, heck start with stock voltage and then as you get used to the whole cwm flashing and understand if you phone can handle the uv start working down towards lower voltages. Many of us can handle -100mv UV which does give a tad more battery life over the course of a day

Thanks for your help man. Im going to try that and see if the vibe, BT, and now BW issues resolve.

After successfully flashing the kernel I will attempt to flash the DL09 super clean.

You have a link where I can buy you a beer?

You are too kind. You thanks is enough for me, just pay it forward :)

Also note that superclean will de-bloat you so if you rely on anything vzw it will be gone afterwards

on the contrary, I want to get rid of the vz bloat...really mostly useless IMO

I just want a clean snappy phone with no lag.

My litmus test is hitting the search button so that I can find a contact, etc.
my evo basically had no lag so I would look up apps and contacts using the search button all day, but with the SF, the lag makes that discouraging to use.

Thanks again for your help.

Because I got to installation aborted several times, I tried the the file listed in post 25 from OMJ. Worked like a charm.

A couple of things from my point of view. Already having DL09 before starting this, loosing root from Dirrk's EZ Root v0.2 after update to SL09, no bloatware or anything removed from the phone, I came here bc that root method didn't work anymore...

In Odin, I get Kernel, Reset and Pass and my phone powers off. I need to put my battery back in the phone in order to power up at step 9 and wherever you see (reboot). I let the phone get to full desktop and then powered down.

I checked my phone, and root is back.

Not only is there a method for rooting, but a quick recovery for those having problems like myself.

Question: What thread should I monitor for rooting and OTA when 2.2 comes out? Is there one thread over another that is the "go-to" thread?

Thanks in advance, and thanks again for such easy to follow steps and recovery.

I don't think you'll have to worry about that when froyo comes I'm sure it'll be more like where can you look and not see it ;)

Is there a reason to de-root my phone before giving it back to Verizon? They just sent me another phone because my USB icon shows that I'm physically connected to the cable once and a while, when I am not. While that is going on, charging shows a fully charged battery when I know it is not. These are pre-DL09 issues.

If there isn't an issue with turning in a rooted phone, then removing superuser shouldn't be an issue either, correct?

If there is an issue, what's the best method for de-rooting if I used this method to root?
