The "improvements" seem to only be hitting the consumer selling points and not much for technical considerations. While we can pick a nit with just about everything they did or didn't do with the S5, it's quintessentially Samsung and I bet they sell a boatload of them.
Um ... phones per shipping case x cases per container x containers per ship ... okay, 17 boatloads of them.
I like my S2. It's a great knock-around and/or backup phone. My wife loves her S3 and my son (according to his fiancee) is best friends with his S4.
I don't see me going back to Samsung for my daily driver anytime soon, but I would recommend them all day long to your average consumer.

No idea, and nor does anyone else - including most of the people who report these rumours. Usually the Note does not have higher resolution than the corresponding S flagship, but that might change.
Conversely these higher resolutions will consume more power themselves, work the gpu harder, but bring marginal if any visible gain in sharpness. It's not obvious to me that there's any point - shorter battery life plus lag in order to get bragging rights about something that's only visible when looking closely at special test patterns. But there was a recent Anandtech article on this topic you may want to look up if this interests you.

Went to Verizon last night & traded in my S3 for the Note 3. I really wanted to be impressed with the S5, but I'll pass.

The heart rate sensor had me scratching my head. Do they seriously want people to strap a 5"+ phone to themselves while they work out? Or have they read the menu at U.S. Fast food restaurants and decided coronary patients are a growth market?

What part of the size concerns you?
It's definitely a much larger screen. It's also much more impressive. However, I think it will be a good choice for me. Holding the phone it feels fine. Doesn't feel too big. But I also have big hands. And a big head!
Being a Firefighter, I like being able to keep in touch with my family while I'm at work for 2 days. Having this extra screen real estate makes browsing the Internet, fb, etc much more satisfying. I can already see this taking the place of my iPad for browsing..

I think they added a bunch of gimiky features to the phone. I'm not all that impressed with what I have heard so far. It just doesn't look like they are prioritizing a premium build.

I was worried that the Note 3 would be too big, coming from a Galaxy Nexus. But it's really not! I love this thing! Does everything I need it to do, with style and good grace. The Galaxy S5 is... well... the next big yawn IMO. But as Lunatic said: they will sell tons of them. I shall not be among those buyers.

Oh, I see. Hook up the heart monitor to a dating app so you can see who gets your motor running. Clever Samsung.
I'm not in the market for this : it's too big for me and I'm not buying a phone this year anyway, barring the unforeseen. But I thought it was less gimmicky than the S4 overall. Water resistance and a faster focusing camera are actually useful features, which isn't something I felt about the S4's additions.
Heart rate monitor strikes me as rather pointless in a phone. But that seems to be this year's trend - there's been a lot of chatter about various manufacturers putting them in watches over the last few months, so maybe they thought "that's the next hot thing, let's stick one in the phone as well"?

Ya. I was kinda disappointed to see them go that route. I was disappointed with the trailer and kinda got the thought that I kinda knew it wasn't going to be something that special. Heart rate. Seriously?? That's something for a small, very very small market. Something more for the gear 2.
Because not everyone is prepared to pay the premium for the 32GB version, or needs 32GB of system storage?
Colour rendition and accuracy are claimed to be better, plus there's the new adaptive contrast feature to enhance visibility in all lighting conditions. The spec sheet only tells half the story.
That'll be the new Sony Xperia with the same SOC, same storage capacity, same res on a 0.1" larger display, similar IP rating then?
If Samsung are to be believed it's also something their users asked for. Which may well be true, given the popularity of Runtastic, Fitbit and other assorted training/fitness apps. It's a logical progression of the S-Health suite regardless.
The difference is that the S5 also "speaks" ANT+, making it compatible with hundreds of third-party training aids. I reckon it won't be long before there's an app that will interface with your cycle turbotrainer and let you ride the Tour De France in the comfort of your living room!
What I'm excited about is the 802.11ac MIMO wifi capability and the 'Download Booster' LTE/wifi aggreation; these are real innovations in a mobile device.
I hadn't heard about the MiMo. Doesn't that mean it can be used as a WiFi repeater?

Unimpressed with this year's MWF. It seems as if manufacturers aren't taking any risks anymore, having risen to the top of distribution/sales. Personally, I'm curious about the Iphablet 6. I'm kind of negative nowadays. Not excited about Android anymore. Unhappy about Verizon not allowing us to keep unlimited. Unenthused with the S5. Maybe I should get a new hobby.

Let's all move to iOS. Just kidding. Your probably right. Samsung may just have reached a peek in their sales and they know that of they impress us greatly the numbers would not be that much higher. Why spend more money if they don't get that much in return.

I could have rephrased it a bit better and directed my comment as more of an issue with my disappointment in the materials used. It's all personal preference. Just as you prefer plastic. With that said, it definitely has nothing to do with apples "influence" as you so put it.
This phone doesn't do much for me personally. Too similar to the last phone. Baby steps. I do like reading the glass half full comments about how it's all going to be different in the next version. Keep the faith!
It's true, I'm an avid smartphone enthusiast that prefers variety, that plus I choose to buy and evaluate the phones I'm interested in rather than rely on feedback from others.
Currently my two favorite phones are my Note 3 and Nexus 5.
A smartphone is mission critical, an absolute necessity for my work and personal use, therefore finding the best phone for my workflow is essential.
I respect everyone's individual wants and needs, choice of materials is part of that. Yet for some reason besides Apple and Pro-Apple sites that push a certain agenda, metal has it's advantages, but it is not as superior as many would have us believe. Nor is plastic as bad as many claim.
The reason I attribute a lot of the demand for metal to Apple is because they've cleverly promoted their products as "cool & hip" for years. Steve Jobs was a marketing and sales genius, developed a cult like following which continues to endure. It's just a fact. Quite the accomplishment.
I happen to thoroughly enjoy and rely on my MacBook Pro, two decades of Apple Computer use have served well, thus my point is that I'm certainly not Anti-Apple.

After my letdown with the S5, I went down to Verizon last night & traded in my S3 for a Note 3. I decided to just throw on a Commuter Otterbox case over it & a glass screen protector. So far I'm enjoying the extra screen real estate. This will definitely help pass time around the Firehouse.

This is also why we have rooting, so we don't have to deal with all the bloatwares, especially when you're coming from Verizon.
