Root Security patch text?

Got the following text message and am wondering what it is/is it safe for us:

VMFreeMsg A security patch is available for ur phone. Go to virginmobileusa.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5662 for info & instructions on how to download

It's from the virgin mobile text number but I don't know if it's safe for rooted users or something

I wouldn't do it. A "security patch" will probably not make your phone any more secure and will likely remove features or something. It could also possibly brick it.

Both of these do seem oddly similar... I have not recieved this text message, but I will stray away from anything like that if they send it. Very odd indeed.

That one doesn't show the wording of the text if I'm not mistaken. This particular text said security update. But I'm wary of any sort of update from Virgin.

Do not install this update!!!

This update will remove root, replace your custom recovery, and leave you with a possibly un-rootable phone (still to be determined).

The only advantage this update brings is a new radio, which may or may not be better. Give the devs some time to play with this (I mean a week or two), and we may find something useful in it.

I repeat, Do not flash this update!!!

Im just hazarding a guess here, but since they're capping our data, could that be the reason for the update? Something that allows them to throttle individual phones?

No, they have had the ability to throttle you since the beginning, mmarz found the throttling code almost a year ago while rummaging around in the logs. ;)
