Root Stuck on boot screen

33mega33

Newbie
Hi guys I've been working with a friend's phone and I encountered a problem which I'm trying to solve since earlier today , now I found similar threads having not final results and after reading here and there everywhere I decided to open this thread so I can explain where is the difference in the problem Im having

the main problem with the phone was the touch screen which was broken , I managed to replace that.

when I try to turn on the phone it stays stuck on the "Htc EVO 4G" screen and doesnt show anything else, however, the phone sounds as booting , I tried calling to the phone and guess what, It does rings! but still the screen is stuck on the splash screen.

I tried using the recover menu (in the "power+vol down" menu )but it doesnt work, it only goes back to the first screen where the build info is located.

I also tried re-installing the stock recovery but everytime I tried to upgrade nothing happens, I tried so many versions and only 2 of them worked but all I got was a message saying "the main version is older"

Also tried the RUU reset and i got a "error 140"

I don't know what else to try, hope someone can help me :(

Im not sure if the phone is rooted I think is not , since my friend got it not too long ago

some Info about the build

It says **LOCKED (OOW)**
o.k...then you are not rooted.
Have you tried the "clear storage" in the bootloader screen? (that's the name of the screen where you got that info from)
That option will perform a reset but you will lose your data, apps, contacts if not backed up to google.
If that doesn't work I can provide you with a ruu.
Btw, what ruu did you try to run?

I did tried the clear storage option on the boot loader screen but the problem persist.
the RUU I used was one I found while searching around im not sure about the version but this is the name it has
"RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed"

that ruu is back in the froyo days. it is too old and will not work. do you remember if it was up to date at all? if so then there is no ruu that will work with the latest update (5.07).

this is the latest 4.67 ruu we have:
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed

Im not really sure if the phone was up to date, I encountered this problem after replacing the touch screen on the phone.
I will try u sing this RUU and see what happens I'll let you guys know how it goes.

It seems the phone is up to date, the second screen on the RUU says updating image from 5.07 to 4.67

I kept going with the update , however , I got the same 140 error.

Is there any way I can downgrade the phone version?

If you are on 5.07 version, there is no ruu for it.
Can you downgrade? No, sorry.:(
I am thinking, I wonder, if you can root that phone in it's current state...you can only get to the bootloader screen correct?
It's worth a shot, but any files you need to download to your sd card will require you to pull the card and put it on your computer to download the files.
I have never tried, or guided someone thru that process, so I am not totally sure that would work.
The only way to downgrade is to install a custom rom, and that requires root.
The only thing that befuddles me is the fact you stated the phone rings when a call comes in but is on the splash screen right?

I have a sd adapter to my pc, that's the way I've been transferring files today.
I can try to root it and install a custom rom on it, however I may need a guide.

Even with the splash screen the phone seems to be functional , it rings when I call and once in a while I can hear a beep as it has some message or notification on it. that's really weird :(

Well, stand by...I am not really sure if it is possible to root your phone in it's current state.

Also, that is bizzare that the phone will ring, and you can hear other notification sounds. As if the phone is functioning, but only the splash screen shows.

Does the screen ever go off?

Thank you so much. Ill stand by and wait for the assistance :)
If you want, read thru this guide:

The first step is to unlock the bootloader via htcdev.
That is done from your bootloader screen..

The second step is to install recovery.
Done from your bootloader screen also.

The third step is to install a rom.
Done thru recovery that is accessed thru bootloader.

I don't see why it couldn't be done imo:)

I also don't see why this cannot be done. Also I'm so confused about this situation. Changing the hardware should not mess with the software... Anyway, to use htc dev, you only need fastboot. So once in your bootloader you should be able to choose fastboot. Then plug your phone into the pc and you should see fastboot usb in red letters. If so, you should be able to use fastboot commands. You may need to install drivers first. But I dunno if I'd guarantee that rooting would solve the problem. If the problem started after swapping the screen, I'd be afraid that there is some bizarre issue that might not be software related. But maybe it worth a try?

Thanks brian! yeah, I am also wondering why this all started with a screen replacement, but the lcd screen works but why would the hardware replacement mess with the software? Eh, nothing lost by trying I think :)

I will take a look at the guide, for now I need to take a break, its been a long day .
Guys I really apreciate all your asistance Ill let you know how it goes tomorrow hope you all have great night.
:)

again thank you all for your help :)
No problem, time for bed for me also...I'll check back tomorrow and see how you are doing:D

Probably the weirdest part is that the phone takes calls without booting up? How does that work? It must be actually booting up but only displaying the splash Screen or something. This ranks up there for possibly the strangest problem I've ran across! :D we might have to pull out the big guns (scotty) for this one!!

I can hear all the booting up sounds when I turn on the phone , just liike if it were working , but the screen stays stuck on the splash screen , the fact that the phone rings when I call makes me think that something may be wrong with the screen but again the screen display perfectly when i go to the bootloader screen or when I run the RUU on it. It also display the splash screen if I go to the recovery menu, since the phone seems to boot up , this makes me think,.

"Maybe when I go to the recovery menu is actually working but not displaying" if so maybe a blind walkttrough around could help me to restart the phone or something.

Im starting to get frustrated :(

I havent started working on the phone yet, since Im kinda busy at work . just came to see the updates on the thread. Ill proceed with the rooting later today and keep you informed about the situation :D

^This seems very possible to me.

To the OP:
Are you sure when you replaced the screen that you reconnected everything (and correctly)? It could be a little connection linked to the touch screen (digitizer?) that's preventing the touch screen from initializing - which is why the phone is actually booting up, but you can't see anything.

I think that's the first thing to look at. It sounds like the software is working fine.
