Root [SUPPORT] Ubuntu 12.04

Just wait. You end up liking the Linux command line so much that the microsoft command line won't make sense anymore

I agree 100% about the Linux command line. I'm doing the Windows 8 beta, but I've got Ubuntu set up in a virtual box. The terminal setup reminds me alot of the old DOS days, which is a good thing. Lol!!!! I'm about to fully Sudo apt Windows Uninstall and go full Ubuntu!!!!!

I have a 2tb hard drive.
300GB ubuntu 10.10 amd64/ ext4
300GB windows 7 ultimate x64/ ntfs of course..
dual booting with grub2 menus Theme Grub 2 with Burg Manager ~ Ubuntu 10.10 - YouTube
this will also support up to 1080i resolution as you stated having problems with your grub menu in the op

1400GB media storage partition/ ntfs so windows can use it

all user home folders for both ubuntu and windows are on media storage partitions so all my files and media exist on storage and not in the OS partitions. only thing that goes into the OSes are apps. My reason for this is, when windows breaks(because it will) or if I have to reinstall either OS for whatever reason, I just format/reinstall the OS partition, re-link to media storage, and install apps. I never have to transfer my files to a external HDD. only as backup..

saves so much time and I have learned that once windows starts getting all buggy and slow over time or gets a virus, it's easier to just install fresh rather than troubleshoot for hours on end:rolleyes: without any risk to my personal files..

sorry for the long post. just thought I might share some ideas on what you might want to do once you get familiar with it :D

it seems I have a permission problem.

Installing Apktool in Ubuntu

i've followed these instructions, but when I pull the files into the /usr/local/bin it rejects them.

As always, any and all advice/help is appreciated.

you have to do so in the terminal with the full path

tips while in terminal:
/ = root of your hdd
~/ = home/you/
( sudo )is just like super user in android
so:
Code:
sudo cp ~/apktools/apktools.jar /usr/local/bin
repeat with .sh and the other one
let me know if that is what you meant I could show you the next steps

ubuntu 11.10 pissed me off....

Got it installed with wubi without many problems, and started tinkering around with programs. everything in the repository/software center was fine, no issues. Put a new music player on it since apparently ubuntu can't play mp3's out of the box.

And then I tried installing my favorite screensaver, Electric Sheep, one of the few things that has been on every computer i own. The repository version wouldn't work, so I tried installing from source. I hate command line even more now. Forget the fact it wont run my video games, winamp, connect to my homegroup and share my music drive, and the damn window buttons are on the completely wrong side..... if i can't have Electric Sheep I don't want it.

Obviously, you're doing it wrong.

I have an ubuntu media server at home, took like 12 minutes to set up. My windows computers have no trouble seeing it on the network.
winamp.....srsly? that's so 90's... plus..WIN-amp..... it's for windows duh.
also, Ubuntu totally has built in mp3 support. Even running the LiveCD, if you hover over an mp3 file in the file explorer, it will play a preview of the track.

ubuntu certailnly plays mp3s right out the box. My whole 10GB library is mp3. Never had an issue with that and I use the stock player and have been using ubuntu for like 6 years. never used electric sheep so I cant comment on thet but now I'm going to just to see. lol I play COD moden warfare, black ops, need for speed HP, crysis2 and 3, dragon age, left 4 dead, with two XFX redeon hd 5770s in crossfire on ubuntu so you must not be reading up on how to do this. My linux is installed on the computer with the music. I have a windows home group set up for my windows laptop. I have videos and netflix saved on the laptop and I can access the media server just fine while in linux. winamp is for ubuntu also. WinAmp for Ubuntu 11.10 @ Open Tech SmbA
there are like a billion free themes for ubuntu that will allow you to change the butttons to look exactly like windows if thats what you want;)
the point of the command line is to do things faster. the mouse was invented for people who have no no computer skills to be able to manage :stickyman:
Not dogging anyone by the way, just stating facts

Remember kouma, i'm an idiot. I fiddled around with trying to make it connect to my homegroup, but i'm still garbage with command line stuff. so I eventually just plugged the music hdd into my laptop. Ubuntu does NOT come with mp3 support in the initial install. All my DRM free mp3's would not work in the stock music player, i had to download ubuntu-restricted-extras

ubuntu-restricted-extras - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah, Winamp is from the 90's, its over 15 years old. I paid the $20 to get the full unrestricted version over ten years ago when I was in high school, and i'm still using it to put music on my prevail, it's easier than drag-dropping 13gb of music every time i wipe the SD card. Its still regularly updated.

never used electric sheep so I cant comment on thet but now I'm going to just to see...

Be warned, Electric Sheep is like LSD for your eyeballs. All three computers in my house have it. and once you see it you will understand why i'm mad i can't make it work.

By the way, I am the people who have no computer skills, all my knowledge consists of googling anything i see that i don't recognize, and at least with windows, very little of it involves command-line, hence why I haven't learned it. I only tried ubuntu to try and learn some more about linux and command line stuff (and i'm unemployed and bored all the time)

My gaming laptop, an Asus G73jh, was the first of their affordable monster laptops. which means it's a buggy screwed up POS. After tons of video card driver fixes and reflashing the video stuff like twenty times, its runs rock solid now on windows, and there's no way in hell i'll risk gaming on linux. Thats why i picked dual-boot ubuntu to fiddle with.
