Root Sweet I did it

Well I just got up enough courage to root my phone. I used z4root and it went thru with no problems.
I did a back up. So now I'm thinking about a ROM. I like the black notification bar. I'm thinking about gummyjar or apex. Just have to read up a little more on them and the process.
Thanks for all the good info on here and all the work you guys do with these phones.

It's actually pretty simple. I just flashed ApeX to my phone. I've been rooted for a while but just got around to flashing a ROM, I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner. Just get the Droid X Bootstrap Recovery and ROM Manager and it's a snap.

Better 1st ROM? I don't consider GummyJAR a complicated ROM at all. My take on the two ROMs he chose is you can go right or left.... right leaves more blur in the O.S., left takes more out. I would agree Apex would be a befter 1st time choice than say Obsidian or Ultimate Droid. But GummyJAR is just a good a ROM to start out on as Apex if you ask me.

It's hard to debate the conversations and support that Apex generates. I think Apex will allow a newbie a certain measure of comfort knowing that somewhere in that massive Apex thread any problem has been experienced and solved.

There is no 'better' choice with ease of installation. Neither are at all difficult, even for a first time ROM'er. It's really just a matter of choice if you use any Blur at all. If you don't have a need for it (personally I feel market alternatives are better than any of the Blur elements), GummyJAR is best. If there are some Blur elements you like, Apex may be best.

I suggested Apex since it seems to have more blur, therefore less setup for a someone new to roms.

Lol, while I agree with you, I sort of look at that monsterous thread with intimidation... I'd personally hate to have to wade through all those posts to find anything at all!

I recently made the jump to my first rom - Apex 1.3.1. That was after much anxiety about bricking my phone. Actually took me a while to make the decision to root and some additional time to tippy toe into romming. I have to say that the "encyclopedic" nature of the Apex Rom thread and the outstanding support from Fabolos makes Apex a very wise choice. It is very stable, fast and has some very good themes to go with it. The user support base is large and there are so many great folks in here to work you through it.

I am sure the other roms are great, frankly after theming and trying a few different mods with Apex, tho a noobie, i am no longer scared and you will feel the same once you read and follow the guides a few times. Fabolos also maintains a wiki that provides additional information.

I am looking forward to the obsidian or UD roms when they are stable enough but frankly I am hoping Fabolos can take the Apex to the next level by building on/incorporating some of the great work by these other devs into his rom.

While less blur and speed is of course desired, the comfort and stability of apex coupled with a significant boost in speed from stock makes it a killer rom.

Overall we owe a lot of thanks to all the rom developers for their hard work and sacrificing the time to create awesome roms/themes and mods for the Droid X.

Thank you guys. You all rock!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I really like the look of gummy with the watermark theme. The notification bar just looks really nice blacked out and the signal app with all the extra bars is bad azz. The icons look really 3d too.
I'm not to worried about having any blur left I'm running LPP right now and dont have any blur widgets running.

I just want something that looks totally different then all the other X's around me and runs fast and smooth.
I'm still up in the air though.

I posted in a different thread about my google sync not having all my contacts saved when I looked it up online. Is there a way to get them all in there for a back up/restore, or will the back up I made when I rooted my phone have them all saved?
Also is there a good tether app out there now that I'm rooted? I want to hook it up to my xbox 360 and see if it will run live through my phone. Right now it is hard wired to my router. Could I make my router see my phone and run the net off my phone?

Lots of questions guys I'm like a sponge soaking up knowledge. Thanks

My two cents... I love Apex and have run every ROM out there... and I truely mean them all. OP, please remember there are other Blur elements that aren't just widgets on the screens. I can't stand the fact that I can't add "yahoo" email to the "email" app on blur free ROM's (gummyjar), and if you have ever used YMail app from market you will hate that even more... feel like Fab balanced the blur/non-blur line perfectly. To be honest, some blur is ok... I dont use any of the Social Networking stuff, instead I use LPP's twitter/facebook widgets. Until UD or Obsidian come out with a fully functioning ROM, I'm sticking with Apex.

Plus you noted that you liked the "Blacked Out" notification bar, Apex comes stock with the black bar and Gingerbread theme installed. I'll include a screeny of my main screen.

+1

Can't say I've run every rom, but I'm on #4. This is apex with LPP and NexTheme installed:

Tried both and prefer GummyJar to Apex. For some reason had a lot of problems with the newest build of Apex, even though other builds ran smoothly. Gummyjar gives great battery life.

My experience with GummyJAR has been overwhelmingly good. I've had absolutely zero reboots on this ROM, and my phone used to reboot a LOT!

For some reason blur rubs my device the wrong way. Like a punk rocker in military boot camp, it just doesn't want to follow directions. Slap a blurless ROM into the bootloader and my device runs like sliding a puck along fresh, clean ice... it glides effortlessly. Start throwing blur in the mix and it's like trying to roll a baseball down a gravel drive... hopping, skipping, flying off in obscure directions... it's just not very predictable.

So for my phone I stick with as little blur as I can get my hands on. And since Obsidian and Ultimate Droid aren't quite ready yet, that leaves GummyJAR as my best bet.

I completely agree. Ever since I went blurless (Tranq 3.6) my phone has been smooth as ever. Not even a random reboot!

I'll have to give GummyJAR a try at some point; seems like it's getting a lot of hype!

Tranquility would be my second favorite rom after Apex. Very noob friendly. Maybe more than Apex considerin it doesn't use.scripts and TBH has a toolbox.for all the extra.stuff. like Chevy did with SS.

All right guys I finally felt comfortable enough to flash a ROM. I chose apex 1.3.1 because everyone said its noob friendly and very stable.
Wow, so much smoother and snappy.
I'm so happy I finally manned up.

So now I have a turbo charged rooted custom ROM flashed droid X.
I wish they would of just made the phone like this out of the box.

Now for a theme how to I go about putting that on? Any votes for which one. I like the dark or black themes.

O yea before I go I tried to flash the upgraded battery icon with the percent displayed and for some reason it just kept saying no files found in bootstrat when I clicked on the zip file.

Now I keep getting this pop up saying
Sorry!
The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Force close

I'm not even doing any thing when this happens and its random. Sometimes after I send a text it will do it, after I go back to my home screen it will do it, just random.
Its not messing anything up or slowing down my phone its just annoying seeing this pop up all the time.

+1 for Nexttheme. It has the black notification bar and nice icons. While technically I think there isn't an official version for 1.3.1, just run the latest version available. It works just fine on 1.3.1.

Are you running .340? If you're still on 2.3.15 and load a rom based on .320 or .340, you'll have trouble with media.
