Swype avail for Eris

First- awesome app, thanks guys for the help and app.

Second- What is the difference between this and shapewriter? Just was curious what if any.

I still like it but I'm finding it might not be as useful as I first thought. I think my speed using it is about the same as the standard keyboard and it is a lot harder to use when driving I guess I'll probably switch back and forth depending on what I'm doing.

I love how easy it is to teach it new words. Just manually type the new word in, and it is remembered and swype-able! Before this, I used the Sense T9 KB, which was pretty good, but still subject to hangups. The fact that T9 wasn't available for all text entry windows, and the tedious method of adding new words to the dictionary were the biggest strikes against it, and none of those issues remain with Swype. Converted for lyfe!

Now I just want the opportunity to make my copy legal and get automatic updates!

I have been using Swype and def. can't use it when going down the road but who's suppose to be doing that anyway? :) I am finding it to be more and more cool as I work with it. I need to watch tutorials to learn all of the tips and tricks.

You shouldn't text while driving !

I have noticed on mine that if I hold down the backspace key or the shift key, it will do a force close. Has anyone else experienced that? Yes, I rebooted after I installed. Is there a way to delete words faster than hitting backspace one letter at a time or a way to use caps lock which would not cause it to force close?

Also, some things I don't like about it (and maybe there is a setting to change this that someone could point me to..)
1) If I choose to use my spelling instead of its recommendation, it doesn't auto-add it to the dictionary like the stock keyboard does (at least, it doesn't appear to).
2) it doesn't auto-capitalize proper nouns like states or the word 'I', and it doesn't automatically add the ' to contractions like isn't.

Anyway, those are just my findings. I switch back and forth between this one and the stock one depending on what I want to do.

not sure if someone posted this yet, but ShapeWriter for Eris/Hero same thing in the market for those who want it from that source...

Thanks for the post. Writing with it now. I like it.
In beta as well, but made for Eris.
Auto caps works and it's a cleaner interface, IMO, albeit the buttons are a bit smaller.
Anyone else try Shape Writer yet?

Mine doesn't FC with the backspace. Did you disable the sounds in the settings? Mine does insert the apostrophes. In all the words can't, don't, shouldn't etc. you have to teach it. Swype isnt. a popup window should allow you to select isn't. Everytime you type isnt, isn't will automatically be inserted.

I tried Shape Writer for a little while before we got Swype and I really didn't like it. I found it more difficult to use and word detection wasn't very good. So I switched back to the compact qwerty, then found Swype here the next day. Much happier with Swype now than I was with Shape Writer.

I played with it some this evening, and was pretty thoroughly disappointed. For me, at least, it seemed significantly less accurate than Swype, and I really hated the screen layout. Permanently reserving screen space to display alternate word spellings is very inefficient for smaller devices like the Eris ... and because of the way it's arranged, the horizontal keyboard is almost as crunched up as the vertical one is.

Plus, after a little typing Shapewriter stopped responding, and ultimately forced a reboot. So now it's uninstalled, and I'm back to Swype.

Maybe it's partly because illicit software is always a little more shiny and alluring, but I really think Swype is going to be hard to beat.

I skipped the whole USB file transfer thing and just e-mailed to myself, and downloaded it that way. I am proud to say I managed to get it working and this will be my 4th keyboard (anysoftkeyboard, shapewriter beta, betterkeyboard) and hopefully I'll like it.

Thank you guys SO MUCH, I love this forum. It has made using my Eris much better. This phone is capable of things that I had no idea of when I bought it.

Now I have some texting to go do.

Help! Where is the install?
I've Dled the file, renamed it, put it in a folder in ASTRO
But can't find install.
Thanks!

Caddy,
I've been reading this forum for weeks, joined today.
I've opened it then went to the next step...nothing...I'm missing something here.
I'm thinkin' I didn't rename it right after download.

when you open/execute it (a .apk file), it should jump to the installer automatically....like a .exe for windows would....if not you have something wrong.
