Telus Galaxy S2 (T989D) Ultimate Root and Optimization Guide with Steps

No, the nandroid won't unroot you. Usually you make a nandroid in your new custom recovery after you're rooted. If you restore the rooted nandroid, you will still be rooted. :)

If you haven't read through this thread, it may help some.

Worked like a charm. Used the TWRP to root my KOODO 4.0.4.

Many thanks to Blue and Atma! And all other contributors to this thread.

I had to flash the TMobile radio to my phone, in order to unlock it. Now I want to flash the original Koodo radio back.

Found two threads that give guidance:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1851688 : this one which instructs you to "Wipe cache/Dalvik, and Fix Permissions" after flashing radio.

and

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400 : this one, whose instructions are: flash radio, and reboot. That's it.

...Anyone can suggest which method is better, and less likely to create issues?

Either one will work fine really. I haven't wiped cache or fixed permissions when flashing a radio but it certainly won't hurt anything if you do.

I thought I read somewhere if you DON'T wipe cache and fix permissions when flashing the radio, it's likely to cause some issues later when using "force stop" command to close apps?

I don't remember seeing that anywhere, and I'm not sure why the radio would affect apps, but its not going to delete or hurt anything you need just wiping the caches and fixing permissions if thats what you want to do.

Jellybean 4.1.2 stock roms for Telus and Koodo added to the Odin guide.

My ICS Koodo phone is rooted, and using a T-Mobile radio (which I had to flash, in order to unlock my phone).

If I update to 4.1.2 my phone will

1. become unrooted
2. will lose the T-Mobile radio and revert to using a Koodo radio

Are both of these correct?

Yes to both. :)

Hi.

In the instructions it says "If you are on 2.3.5: Superuser app 3.0.5 If you are on 2.3.6: Superuser app 3.0.7". I'm going to be getting the SGH-T989 which runs on ICS 4.0. Which superuser app version should I be getting?

Thank you!

Hi ipwnj00x :hello:

Congrats on your soon to be new phone! :)

Check this guide. It has more recent files. Also, the SGH-T989 was updated to Jellybean 4.1.2 a few months ago. As soon as you get your phone I would update to that if it isn't already. It runs better and is easier to root.

HI I have Telus S2x and tried putting the Tmobile (T989UVLE1_T989TMBLE1_T989UVLE1_HOME.tar.md5) but it failed. Now I am stuck at Samsung logo. Is there another file I need to get this phone unlocked. I originally upgraded to 4.1.2.

Should I follow different process since I was on 4.1.2?

Thanks

Hi all, and thanks Blue1k for starting this thread.

I've recently bought a second hand T989D from Telus, although I'm not in Canada nor USA.

The phone has already upgraded to 4.1.2 and works like charm (haven't experienced a single hung since I started using it, although it sometimes de-registers from the network -Movistar, Argentina-).

My only concern is this version lacks of Spanish language (which is spoken down here)... I honestly don't care about the UI since I'm fluent in English (and actually prefer it), but I seriously miss word prediction and Swype in Spanish (very useful when the people I'm interacting with don't speak English).

I've rooted and flashed phones before, but before I attempt touching this flawless phone I want to know if it's worth...

It seems like this specific version of Galaxy S2 is unique to Telus (even the closest T989 seem to be owned by T-Mo for USA).

So... I'm wondering if any of the ROMs out there do include Spanish (maybe the T-Mo might have it, since there's Spanish speaking public in USA, while The Canadian Telus only offers English, French and Korean).

I read both phones (the T989D and T989) are the same hardware, with different ROMs / Kernels optimized for Telus or T-Mo networks, but since I'm using yet another network, that wouldn't make any difference, will it?

Anyone running any ROM who can tell for good it includes Spanish?

Thanks in advance for any help

Dan

when u say wipes ur phone does it mean everything? like photos, downloaded apps, music contacts? or can you be more specific please

I have a un-locked Koodo Galaxy S2 (T989D) that I have on the Fido network. Can't complain everything seems to work perfectly. It's running 4.1.2 I don't want to change anything or lose anything other than root it so I am able to run Titanium Back-up pro. What would you recomend as the safest easiest way to root.
Many thanks

thanks very much @mister_mayhem for ur time and patience to help me, but one last thing is there a way I can kinda backup my apps or data? and is there any other risk aside from that?

Titanium backup requires root access. I use it to back up my apps when I switch ROMs. As for your data, leave any media files on your external SD card. Odin will not erase data on your external SD card. Sorry for not clarifying clearly enough.

can you please show me how to flash stock ROM.tar file in Odin please, sorry for bothering you im not really good at this stuff, don't want to **** my phone up.
