The 8GB vs 16GB Thread

I pre ordered the 8GB on the day they announced it. I'll likely never use more than about 2GB of space, so the 16GB would be overkill. I'll use it as an ereader and streaming content on wifi. On the rare occasions I want to watch a movie off line, 8GB is more than enough.
 
I went with 8gb. The only thing I'm really going to need physical space for it nandroid backups, which i only need like 1 at a time. I'm going to start utilizing a lot more cloud services such as Google Drive and I am already using DropBox.

Also, the $200 price point is what drew me in and the 16gb version was creeping up to $300, a little too much for my taste.

The concept is that you let someone else store your sh*t. ;D
After tax and shipping, + the cover, my order came to $302.78 for the 16GB. I think it is going to be well worth it. =]

Good point. In fact, since pre-ordering, & all of the accompanying discussion since, I've been reading up on & seriously considering a Subsonic setup; especially now since it also does video...

Isn't cloud free with purchase of a Nexus 7? Dropbox charges don't they?
If you use WIFI mostly wouldn't the 8GB version be best?

Well if you use google drive you get some free storage, though I'm not sure how much. Dropbox gives you some free storage and there are lots of ways to get more free storage. The thing with the 8gb is that it's not 8, its more like 6. It's really up to your preferences. I bought the 16gb simply because I could. At that price it's a steal.
 
I went with the 8gb. I have a 16gb 10.1 Xyboard and have not used half the space . This will be a great tablet for down time at work. I have a tethering plan for my Razr Maxx if i am away from wifi. This will also be a great Able Remote for GoogleTV.

Dropbox gives you 2GB to start out with. You get more storage (which is permanent and free) by using referral links. And I believe if you sign up with a .edu account, you may get twice as much per referral. If I am not mistaken, it used to be that both the people (the person with the referral link and the person that uses their referral link to signup for dropbox) would get an additional 250MB per referral. They have now upped that to 500mb.

Google drive gives you 5GB. I don't know if they will give more after activating the N7.

Check box.com. They have promotions from time to time. I got 50 free gb a few months ago.
 
If you use ES File Manager you can add in online storage options. I've added Google Drive and Sky Drive onto my S2...that's an extra 12GB! Add a box account and that's another 5GB.

ES File Manager lets you use them like proper drives so you can copy and paste onto them. The official Google Drive app doesn't let you download things so is a bit poor.
 
I don't see the reason why not to get the 16GB version,
the price different between them is only $20, here is how it works,
currently you can only buy the 8GB Nexus 7 from Google, they charge you tax and shipping,
which bring the total to about $230USD,
meanwhile I can order a 16GB Nexus from another state, let say from J&R, B&H... etc
which don't charge me tax and included free shipping,
so I only need to pay $249 compare to $230 for a 8GB from Google.

no brainer...
 
16GB. Because it's there! I don't really like cloud storage because I may want to listen to music while on the road. Also, I plan to use GPS (Copilot) which uses 4GB of storage for the USA maps.

You never know what great new whatever app will come along and you will wish you had more storage.
 
Am I to udnerstand that really the only reason for a 16GB would be if you plan on storing a larger amount of games, apps, music, pictures, etc? It still works by being able to pull, for instance, music and movies down from Google Cloud storage via Play Store account?

My wife uses Box, and looking to get her one of these...she has Google Apps acct for work, uses Box for all her files, and has a few movies here and there that she already rented via Play Store...therefore, no real need for extra 16GB if in fact you just want to use cloud storage?

Just wanted to make sure it works similar to how Amazon set up the Fire for customers (which my son has and loves).

I am considering one for myself, and we also use Box and I have a CRM SFDC that is all cloud based. I don't usually keep a lot of movies on it and most of what I listen to is via Spotify or using Amazon's MP3 player for my music purchased through them.

I try and keep my apps limited as well and rarely play games on it.

Thoughts?

Sounds good, I got the 16gig because at work we're not able to connect to the WiFi systems there. So I store my movies on it. I keep all my music on Google Music and just stream through my phone.
 
Personally I'm not sure if a 16GB is worth it unless you do keep a lot of apps, data, and media stored on the device. It's a good strategy to go with 8GB if all of your files and other data is kept on a Cloud or Box storage. That's what I do, but then again, I do have a wifi connection at all times (even on the road with a 4G hotspot).
