The best camera in the world...

The peacock whose pics I posted earlier in this thread (with the self-mutilated neck) is looking DRAMATICALLY worse. So bad, in fact, that I'm going to call the city and ask about getting veterinary help for him.

The following pictures may be disturbing; if you're squeamish, or you have problems with blood, don't look.

Sad
:frown:
Please do call someone. That is a shame. Could be a mite infestation or something that will end in the animal's death.
Yes, I agree that this could be mites or something similar. I DIDN'T think that originally because, as I've said, it's normal for the males to tear out their own neck feathers. But as I watched him yesterday, RELENTLESSLY pulling at his skin, I wondered if something else was going on here. And once I viewed the photos on my laptop, and could actually see how bad it is...wow.

Maybe there is a very that would volunteer or an animal rescue agency in your area that can help.
I'm in Arcadia. We have a protocol through the city for reporting injured peafowl--which I've just done. Our animal control services are actually handled through the Pasadena Humane Society, so that's who I just spoke to. I'm waiting for a call back from their wildlife expert--however, today is Saturday, and she may not be in.

Taken this morning at a coffee shop while sitting by the (propane) fireplace. The reflections on the glass of the fireplace gave it an eerie quality. I find that staring at a fire is much more interesting than watching TV. Galaxy S4 with an in-camera vignette applied.

As a result of the cupboard clear out last weekend, Mancub discovered an old lego set this weekend. He loved it so we popped in to town to get him some more. The fact that it is mainly Halo related is nothing to do with me. :p

Wow that poor peacock man. :(

I wish I hadn't clicked that button show hide button.

:/

I am quite the wimp when it comes to the harm of animals - I can't stand it.

Hope he doesn't kill himself! :'-(

When will she get there with tranquilizer gun to help the poor bird out?

Wow his neck looks very damaged and he looks like he trying to kill bird lice or something or maybe vitamin deficiency of some kind?

Lets see what the vet lady will say and hopefully it will be very quick and fast fix to get the lice infested guy back up and kickin!

:-)

I have always loved animals and nature.

To help get my mind off it I posted a picture of my stinky stinky bestest stinky friend stinky dog "Schnoogy / Jessie" - The Fat Dog with her smile laughing at my confused self after she colonized my bed saying us humans are beyond stupid. :D:D:D

Here she is LAUGHING her back side at how stupid we all are! :-)

stinky-stinky-albums-175ga4-picture8205-2013-10-15-12-25-57.jpg

And then she stuck her tongue at me saying humans are the dumbest things she has ever seen... we go out working all day and they get to sit on their backside, kick back, relax, throw dog parties, play poker, climb Mount Everest, play in the poool, beat up cats and eat lots of preferably old rotting / moldy pork chops while we work our backsides off for their happiness and they sit there laughing at how extremely stupid we are. :)

This is Schnooga Dooga Dog Dog pulling her tongue at me - isn't she the greatest? :)

If you wanna also make your dog (fat) laugh at you like I did then you gotta get some Peanut Butter! :)

"Factory fresh" ek se!

xD

And this is Schnoogums pondering if she has the power to eat my mirror. :)

Yes. :)

Dogs are treated like Royalty in this house - I make damn sure of it!

xD

:D

I took Miss Schnoogy to after care for the holidays and the kids went SUPER SAIYAN when they saw her!

xD

SHAW

Schnoogy didn't like the fact that they thought she was a horse! :D

The wildlife expert and I have conversed multiple times now, both by phone and e-mail. She asked for pics of the poor thing and I sent her a few. Her reaction was swift and clear--yes, it's very bad and he needs medical attention. We've mapped out a plan for what I should do if he returns...but that's not looking good. I have not seen him in a few days now. He had been here every single day since he first showed up, so I'm not feeling good AT ALL about his sudden disappearance. :(

I'm feeling awful right now that I waited too long. But the thing is, his condition deteriorated very quickly. I have pics of him a day or two before the horrible bloody pics and his neck was NOT like that. Bald, yes, but not a bloody, mangled mess. So I'm trying not to beat myself up because there really was nothing I could/should have done before. I mean, had I called when his neck was just bald they wouldn't have done anything--a peacock with a bald area on their neck is not earth-shaking news.

I wish he would come back...

Don't beat yourself up! You have gone above and beyond what most people would do..Most would have looked the other way...Don't give up hope..If he's going to show up anywhere it will probably be in your backyard..We can't always change the course of nature...all we can do is be compassionate, take a stand for what we believe in and lend a helping hand when and where we can...you do that on a daily basis..that is how you choose to live your life!
no matter what happens ..you should be damn proud!:)

What the cat said!

Okay--an update! Good news, bad news, good news.

Good news: I don't think even 20 minutes had gone by since I posted my last reply, and I glanced up and THERE HE WAS. (I'll check the time-stamps later on the photos I took.) I immediately dialed the number for animal control. I told them I'd do my best to keep him here with peanuts and sunflower seeds.

Bad news: My favorite peacock, who also happens to be the alpha male in my yard ecosystem, showed up. I've never NOT been happy to see him...until today. As soon as I saw him coming I knew the sick peacock would leave. And he did, like a bat out of hell. I followed him as he headed down my driveway, and kept an eye on him as he went across the street to graze on a neighbor's foliage. :) I waited...and waited...and waited...and continued keeping him in my sight with my camera. I eventually lost him in the trees of another neighbor's yard. I called animal control and since he was now in a tree, and they can't climb the trees to get him, they canceled the dispatch.

Good news: His neck is improved. A lot. I saw absolutely no sign of bleeding. If any of the pics I snapped are decent I'll post some.

Bottom line: At least he came back, he's definitely not dead or lying somewhere starving, his neck has improved, and hopefully he'll be back tomorrow and we can try again. We knew it was going to be hard coordinating this, so we'll see how it ends up.

Oh, @huh, thank you for the very sweet comments. I take my lifestyle choice of kindness to animals very seriously, and I know you understand that. :)

ETA: Here are some of today's photos. In the first two, you can clearly see the improvement in his neck, and the third shows that he's much more chipper today! He was moving along at quite a nice clip. :D (I'm not hiding them because they're not horrible like the originals.)

Here is another shot of the tower. I drove by there around 11:30am but it wasn't any workers there. I'm still curious as to who's tower it is.

Most often the towers aren't owned by any of the carriers. Many will lease space on it if it allows them to fill a hole or weak spot in their coverage. That's why you will frequently see multiple arrays on a tower.

Anyone who knows me knows this guy.:)

A guy who live close by the tower said it's a police tower. The police station is not too far from us. Everytime I drive by it, which is not often, none of the workers are around. The weather has been pretty cool and they're calling for mid 20s Friday morning.

If the carriers don't own it, who does? I'll keep posting about when I hear more information from some of the workers.

I didn't think that looked like a cell tower, but I know the ones I deal with. Most cell towers now are 150' monopole and can be disguised as flagpoles or pinetrees. Often, a landowner will least as little as 4,000 square feet (1/10th acre) to a company and put up a tower. This is usually in concert with one or more carrier and is often limited to availability of land. Regulations normally require height X 2 away from any dwelling, so a 150' pole would require 300' setbacks in all directions. Also, any tall structures like non stone or brick church steeples, water towers, etc. can have arrays added to them. The towers themselves are only worth around $50k, but antenna arrays worth hundreds of thousands of dollars will be constantly added and replaced.

What martial art does he do? Did you say it was Jiu Jitsu?

They do Karate & Judo classes at my wee lads school, but they're very popular and I've not been able to get him enrolled yet. :(

He is learning Kempo. Right now he is a green belt. He has green with a brown stripe, three ranks of brown belt, then he will be a black belt.

He started when he was 4.
