The BIG 2.1 Thread

I'll be sure to follow up with all of your questions as I use my droid more later tonight and tomorrow. I can confirm there are no bluetooth voice commands yet -- but this is still a pre-release build, of course. The browser lag is greatly reduced if not gone completely, and I can't find night navigation yet -- but I will check everything thoroughly! I just wish I would fix the backlight on the keyboard -- it's driving me insane.

Everything you see in a home replacement app is developed separately from the stock home app. Changes made to the stock home app will never change the way a home replacement app works unless the replacement app was programed to do so.

If you want the features found in the stock app like the new app drawer and the preview cards etc, you must use the stock app.

I wondering if the 2.1 has a faster loading camera, that's a upgrade we could all use regardless of what home app we choose.

Mmm I know the replacements run as seperate apps, so I posted this seeing if any of the zippiness translates into them (or other apps) or if its specific to 2.1 in general. And figured it wouldn't but checked if the new app drawer would work (as some of the home replacements just spawn the drawer). But yeah, if its just homescreen specific improvements there's not much reason for me to upgrade yet. I'll be using Home++ anyway.

Well, new gallery would be worth it to me I think. I'm going to go ahead and try the new rom. I can always nandroid back if it doesn't work out.

I know the answere is no. But what if I copied parts of my original nandroid back up in to the 2.1 nandroid? The folders where apps and settings are stored I can just copy over and then restore.

Is there any reason this wouldn't work?

might be conflicts and things will end up not working properly. not sure because i'm no expert but thats what i would think.

Well, I'll try it.

I am going to copy the app, app-private and the data folder from the data.tar file and see what happens.

i remember reading that 2.1 is an update for ALL phones currently using android, so it's not just for us droid users. not sure if there are any significant or specific updates for droid itself but this is pretty much by and large, an upgrade for all android users. especially for the ppl using 1.6. they don't even get 2.0. just gonna skip straight to 2.1.

Yeah...but I'm not looking for only Droid-specific stuff. Want to know if BT dialing is supported, if you can attach more than pictures to emails, if you can choose your preferred account when sending an email (from within the email compose)...stuff that I believe is cross-device.

It's just odd...it should be a fairly significant update (at least the 2.1 number indicates it should be) but all we've seen is a new weather/news widget, Gallery UI update, and some improvements on the home screen/app tray, and new boot animation. Not impressed w/the UI stuff...don't care about boot animations, GDE already gives me extra home screens (and cooler transitions), app tray is fine as it is, and the Gallery add-on from the Market gives me pinch zoom and flick through pics.

Where's the beef!!?? :D

If this is accurate and that's all that is coming in 2.1, this is a huge disappointment...I don't know who is prioritizing work at Google, but I'm really disappointed that they are prioritizing glitz and glamor over missing functionality (e.g., BT voice dialing, full exchange support, attaching anything other than photos to emails) and fixing too hard to use features (e.g., text selection for cut/copy).

This is too much about selling more phones w/cool looking stuff...not impressed.

Yes, but is it enough to make you not want the phone anymore?

can someone please post 2.0.1 files for nandroid restoring? ... i updated to 2.1 but didnt backup ... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I like 2.1 but want to go back to 2.0.1

PLEASE !

It'll be nice to see the stable version become available. Hopefully the upgrade process is easy to execute, or something that the folks at the Verizon store will be able to assist with.

Don't toy with me...does the phrase "my cold, dead fingers" mean anything to you? :)

Seriously, I love the phone, and will enjoy the new features/UI updates just like everyone else, but it bothers me that stuff like what I mentioned above still appears to be low on Google's priority list. Enough w/the pretty paint, let's fix the house!

I bought the Hero with the idea that I could do hands free calling (like my 3 yr old Treo). The salesman downloaded and app...but it only brought up the contact...I had to choose work, home, cell...I don't want to take my eyes off the road. I understand this is coming with release 2.1...if it isn't I'll have to get another phone. My wife connects bluetooth in her car and it allows voice dialing. My question is either WHEN or is Sprint going to make some allowances for customers to have an additonal phone for hands free calling??? (at no additonal cost)

Initial looks at what's in 2.1 don't haven't ruled out BT voice dialing, but nothing I've seen so far mentions anything about it...

Sorry. I was teasing. I already knew the answer.

I've posted this in a few other threads before, but I think you might find it somewhat informative - it's VZW's leaked roadmap on the Droid's updates (scroll down a bit on the link and you'll see it). The one scheduled for 1/22, which may be 2.1, should iron out a few of the Exchange issues and the attachment problems, though bluetooth voice dialing still seems to be somewhat up in the air.
