The HTC EVO 4G off-topic Banter thread

I just ordered the Evo on Ebay for $590, including 2 day shipping. I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake ordering this, I really want this phone. Is the phones given at the Google I/O the exact same as the ones that you'd buy at a retail store? If so, I doubt I'll have any regrets.

They are the same, except they are $400 less, on contract, and $140 less, full retail. ;)

you know whats funny, i saved up so much freaking money for the evo over the past few months due to rumors of it being anywhere from 600-800 off contract(my upgrade isn't due for a while). So when i bought an ebay evo almost a week ago for a shade over 500 i was soooo relieved!:D

Specs alone are already going to top the the new iPhone, and knowing that sooner or later I will have 4G towers in my city mean that the EVO will be great even a year from now. I have used an iPhone 3G since Dec 2008 and now the phone just pales in comparison to the mighty HTC. My mom works for Verizon and she uses a Droid, got one before they hit the masses and when I played around with it I could see the massive potential that Android has. Together, the EVO and soon to be Android 2.2 should pounce on iPhone 4.0 big time and also I'm looking to get off AT&T's ridiculous plans. Can you believe I have to limit myself to a 200 txt package just to keep the price even manageable? Sprint offers deals too good to pass up and the 30 day "test drive" will make the transition much easier. I'll have the new phone, see if it works where I need it to (and I'm sure it will). It's really a no-brainer.
Exactly. It's nice to see someone with some good 'ol common sense! Coming from AT&T, you will see a major improvement with Sprint's 3G data speeds and call quality/reception/coverage is going to be much better for you. Oh... and cheaper too! Good choice. :)

can anyone take a picture of what the actual phone app looks like on the EVO? I'm sure it's probably similar to many other Android devices, but this is going to be my first Android phone.

Well I'm excited, getting even more so as we get closer to launch. Just wish BB would hurry up and call me so I can set my appointment. :p

What all can you add into the gallery? Is it JUST pictures and/or video taken on the phone, or can you add in your own pics and video from the SD card?

Yes. I copied over all of my photos that were on my Pre last night, to the SDCard, and they all display.

What sucks (or I just haven't figured out yet) is how to keep different folders separate. I have different folders for pics of my gal and I, pics of my dog, riding pics, wallpaper, etc. Gallery shoves 'em all together.

So, we WILL be able to watch our videos using the HDMI out?

That review this morning saying that the HDMI Output was only working with the gallery freaked me out.

I just went to FedEx to pickup my brand new Evo. It is one fast phone and smooth too. A lot of people already know about the screen and the rest of the specs. But my concern was the keyboard. And from the little amount of time I had to play with it so far, I love it, especially in landscape mode. The keys are big enough and they're minimum to no mistakes at all.

Also you can ask me some questions if you have any

Bek, I found this post from another user (michaelk) on thread..
http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/17125-question-about-gallery-folders-organization-wise.html..

where he says

if you want to keep the gallery from indexing and showing the contents of a certain folder- just put a file INSIDE the folder called .nomedia

so all your icon folders (or porn- cough cough- tensider) wont show up.

I actually used the astro filemanager to do it. It wont let you create a file but it will let you creat a zip. So i made a new zip- anyname.zip then save. Then edit it in astro and rename to .nomedia - presto chango the folder is 'invisible' to the gallery.

Have other folders use astro to copy and paste .nomedia into any other folder you want.

Hope this helps !

EDIT: Apparently, according to user (redflea)
I thought I read that any folder that starts w/ a period will be ignored by gallery...

Yup - appears any folder named .whatever will be ignored by the gallery (as well as by the music player....

LOL - not what I was talking about but useful nonetheless.

No, what I meant was that I want 1 separate ALBUM for pics of my dog, another for whatever, etc. Instead, I just have "browse all photos" or something.

But like I said, there may be quirks I just haven't figured out yet. I only toyed with the gallery for about 20 minutes last night.

Is it correct that you can use the 4G toggle when not using the Sense UI? I was told you could hold on the screen, select widgets, settings, and then 4G. Would you please confirm this?

A micro USB cable is a micro USB cable, so yes.
Actually, the Pre charger is extremely sensitive to which charger you use and only works with the stock one for me - I've tried 3 from eBay and none worked. Haven't tested them with the EVO yet though.

The dialer app looks just like any other 2.1 Sense dialer - just everything is proportionally big.

Also, regarding the HDMI out, I was expecting at least a cable in the box, so I can test it out but found nothing. Where is everyone getting their HDMI-out to HDMI cables from?

when you plug a usb into the phone does it give a menu option to tether the phone? i think i remember hearing that was a option on the Hero and the Evo? no app from the market is needed right?

I asked this in another thread, but this may be a better place. Can you use the 4G toggle when using the non Sense UI launcher?

I asked in a seperate thread, but this seems to be a better place to ask.
I have a head unit in my vehicle that allows for bluetooth sms, meaning i can text on my headunit. will the EVO do bluetooth sms?

And answering your question means one of us with an early Evo must disable SenseUI. I have not, nor do i have any interest in doing so. And I suspect the few others who have Evo's have not either, hence the lack of response.

Really? Interesting... my girlfriend & i both have Pre's & have not had any issues with the spare micro usb cables & wall chargers I secured from monoprice. YMMV I guess, but i still find that quirky.
