The HTC EVO 4G off-topic Banter thread

Who else is a little disappointed in how long the power charging cord is that came with the phone? I plug mine in a wall outlet and it cant even reach the top of my dresser. Thank god its micro usb and other electronics I use have chargers I can use.

I remedied that situation by buying 2 6' cables at Fry's. I have a usb/ac adapter at work, so I will just swap out the cable to the micro usb. And I used the other 6' cable in the charger that came with the evo. The cable that came with the evo is now in my car, so I can charge the phone in the car.

Hello all, I'm glad I FINALLY found a forum for this phone. I got in line at 7:30a on release day at the Sprint store, and was out of there by 8:15a. I'm coming from an Instinct, same phone for 2 years (that has NEVER happened!) I was tired of my GF and her d@mn Moto DROID, so I got this and will use her Droid as a coaster. I have LOTS of questions, hoping for LOTS of help!

Pre-ordered my EVO at BestBuy a month ago and picked it up at 7am on launch day. I never pre-order ANYTHING in my whole life.

I am a Sprint customer for 15 years and I can finally say that Sprint does not have the most boring phone of all carriers! In the past, I would just walk into their store and ask for anything that I can use to make calls. I never bother to even pick out a phone, because they are so lackluster. I contemplated switching to ATT or Tmobile, but I'm a lazy ass and didn't want to switch. I even resisted the Hero and the Moment. But this EVO thing...Un Freakin Believable! I can't put the thing down! Even when I do put it down, I can't stop looking at it! What can't this thing do??!!!

How is the typing using the phone when entering forum responses. I know the hero was really slow and laggy when I tried to do replies. Is the keyboard lagging or causing odd words to show up when typing. This happened too me a lot. The word suggestions couldn't keep up, causing it to type odd words.
Very easy to use, no lag for me! :)

I just used a longer male to female usb cord.. so it extended my reach.

I know i can't stop putting mine down neither. But I haven't had much time to play with it or read the manual. I have lots of questions. Someone asked above about Qik I also have the orange icon and the blue. Someone said there was an updated version so I downloaded it and now I have both icons. I want to delete the orange too if the blue is the same and more recent. I still have to set up my emails and add more apps and make up my home screens and add widgets and apps. I use you mail as my visual voice and on my TP2 there wasn't actually an app I could just listen to my messages through my email or there website. But now there is an app and it's nice. I never really had visual voice mail before and me and my friend both got you mail and there was an app for his BB but not for my windows mobile.

This phone rocks! Me and my friend keep going wow it does this and this and it's so cool. He's coming over tonight to put on our clarivue protectors that came today. My co worker put on my seidio one. I got it with my case just until Clarivue ones came. He said it was cheap and he didn't like it. Then he claimed it didn't fit right and go down to the whole bottom of the phone. He had a little trouble and it messed up in one tiny spot. So tonight I hope my friend puts the clarivue one on better. I have clear and anti glare andam leaning towrads the look of the clear one.

Ok on to my one questions that's bugging me. Menu settings account and sync add account there is a Facebook and an HTC Facebook for sense. I had goofed and had to remove my account cause when I went to message or email someone I saw every person on my friends list that had a phone number listed on FB. How do I just get it to link my contacts in my address book only? Please tell me that can be done. Also I had my contacts linked in my TP2 I had done them one by one I tried that here and it still somehow check marked this box back after I had signed in that said sync friends or something. But my contacts went from my TP2 to my Lotus to my EVO and under my Lotus I saw something that said do not edit and it had FB and some ID number next to certain peoples names.

Also I don't really use G mail but I have an account. My friend also got the EVO so we decided when we email each other we will just use Gmail. Well I had his AOL in my contacts also. For some reason when I went to message or email him only I would see his name 4 times I saw his gmail his aol one said mobile for phone and then I saw the number again I guess for texting one had dashes and one didn't. So anyway I saw his name like 4 times when I went to message him. I deleted his contact and wanted to re add him. Well now I don't know which option to check when I re add him it has an option of phone and google. I need to back up all 81 of my contacts to Gmail and I want my gmail calendar to sync to my phone how do I do that? This is all new to me sorry! Do I need to use HTC sync that someone said is on my memory card? Or do I hook up phone to PC and go to my gmail on the pc. I would appreciate any help I can get. Do I need HTC Sync?

I haven't tired taking the battery cover off yet but I have an 8 gig card I used on my TP2 and it was a Kingston Class 4. I know we got a Class 2 not sure what brand but didn't know if I should swap them out or not if it was that big of a deal. I know when I 1st got my TP2 I could never get the battery cover off for the longest time. I haven't tried this one yet but I don't want to break a nail. LOL! But I love this phone and I keep saying this every time I post. I am amazed by it. Tomorrow I will really sit down and read my book and set up my emails and try to learn more. I love going to the search and I said Patrick Swayze and boom it brought up wicklipedia for him it was too cool..

New member here. Quick question. Can anyone confirm whether or not the evo can switch between the two cameras while recording?

Thanks in advance.

Zak

I don't know why I can't figure this out, I am trying to find what program I use to see the street level views that google offers. Can someone help me with that??

My new evo will arrive on my doorstep tomorrow morning. This is my first Droid, and I am not smartphone literate at all. Can anyone point me towards a good primer which can help me figure out which apps I really need starting out, tips, tricks and shortcuts, etc. ? I really am a neophyte and I am afraid this phone may be smarter than I am, lol. Any and all help would be appreciated.:)

Here is a link to a thread that one of our guide's (SprintFun) created that has some useful information for you if your just starting out. The best advice I can give you is to just spend some time poking around the forums in threads that you feel are relevant to what your looking for. Theres also a search feature at the top that can also help you find what your looking for. Good luck :)

Try Google Earth in the market.

Also Maps (google) already installed on your EVO. It will let you do street view if its available in the map. Just long press the street and it will load the address. Then click on the address. Then click on the person icon on the very left if its there.

Hey guys, I'm completely new to the Android OS as of my purchase of an HTC Evo yesterday. I was poking around on the internet and this seemed like a good source for information with lots of knowledgeable people to answer any and all of my questions.

Anyway, I've got my stuff set up, for the most part, what I was wondering was what do I need to be doing to get videos and movies on my Evo so that I may watch them? I've been poking around in the folders when its connected to my laptop (got a Macbook Pro) and I really just am not sure where to load my files up (thats question 1) and what is the best and most recommended program for video conversion (question 2)? The vast majority of my movies are AVI, and from what I understand, HTC phones support MP4 and H.263 (or something, dont remember what the format is, haha), can anyone help? If this question was already answered previously in this post (or elsewhere on the forum), I apologize in advance.

I created a folder called 'Videos' but actually, it seems to auto-detect the files wherever they are placed.

I've owned an Android Phone since April (Easter) of this year.... I played around with my Hero a bit just to train myself on how to use Android so that when I got my EVO I wouldn't fumble around too much; however I have a question that hopefully one of you may have an answer to:

When receiving a picture mail... why does it always come in as a 5sec slide show...? Can this be changed?

One more question... I used my Sprint navigation today and noticed the volume wouldn't work / turn by turn didn't speak to me. I tried turning up the volume, but nothing would fix this.

I'd appreciate any insight, thanks guys.

I downloaded Fring tonight and there are a couple contacts I need to delete. I can't figure out how. I see an add but no delete.

How good is the GPS? Does it lock easily? Does it lock fast? Is position accurate? I have a Samsung Moment and the GPS is horrible. The position is off by about 30 yards with a GPS lock and it takes a long time to obtain a lock. I won't own another phone unless it has a good GPS.

Looking forward to hearing if the EVO has a good one!

What about Google Nav anyone used it? Someone on another forum said they liked it better. I went to Marketplace and didn't see it. But I've always liked Sprint Nav on my other phones. But now having the big screen it's going to be even better. Especially once I get a car dock.

I cant figure out Sprint Navigation either. No sound and no options.

I do like Google Navigation better. While i loved Sprint Nav on my other phones this version seems "cheap".
Graphics aren't as good as previous versions and the sound issue as already mentioned.

If you have an evo (or almost any android 2.1 device), you already have it. It's part of Google Maps. It's under Navigation in your app drawer, and has a blue arrow, pointing up.

Oh I see it now I was looking under Google the G's not N for Navigation. What is Navigatgor? And then where it says Maps is that Google Maps like on your home home computer where you can do street views?

I live "supposedly" in the coverage area Atlanta, but don't get the signal at home, or in my office. Between the 2, when driving, I go in and out of 4G. It's definately not nearly as reliable as Sprint's 3G.

My only disappointment so far. I've worked around this using WiFi.

I think I will have the same issue. I am surrounded by 4g but on the map it shows my whole neighborhood which is pretty big, does not show 4g. I am in atlanta also and I would assume 4g should be pretty strong everywhere. According to the map were talking about literally on the line. I think I will try to evo while I wait for my upgrade to make sure I am going to have coverage.

I haven't played around with it too much, but you should have street view in google maps. And, if available, the navigation will show you a street view when you arrive at your destination.
