The HTC EVO 4G off-topic Banter thread

I live "supposedly" in the coverage area Atlanta, but don't get the signal at home, or in my office. Between the 2, when driving, I go in and out of 4G. It's definately not nearly as reliable as Sprint's 3G.

My only disappointment so far. I've worked around this using WiFi.

I live and work in a "good" area, according to the clear/sprint coverage map. I get really poor signal where I live and work. 3G is much better.

How good is the GPS? Does it lock easily? Does it lock fast? Is position accurate? I have a Samsung Moment and the GPS is horrible. The position is off by about 30 yards with a GPS lock and it takes a long time to obtain a lock. I won't own another phone unless it has a good GPS.

Looking forward to hearing if the EVO has a good one!

I would agree with the other poster who answered except for an experience I had today. I was in a private enclave in Stamford and noticed that my position was off by hundreds of feet. I mean it was huge. But then after I left the immediate the blue triangle hit spot on where I was. It was a little weird.

Has anyone used the Spoken Directions, yet? It's awesome! Say "Joe Blow Restaurant" and real quick it comes up and you start navigating. So cool. I'm sorry, what's that? Not on the iOS4, you say?

What type of structure were you in, in Stamford? My office is concrete, rebar, and glass. I don't get GPS signal inside. I have to go outside. You may have received a signal from some satellites in front of you, but not overhead, thus the inaccurate GPS reading.

ok, so i've been wondering about this phone and if it has the same problems as my previous HTC win-mo phones. My main concern is with my htc touch and touch diamond whenever streaming music, browsing the web, gps or even talking on the phone they would both tend to heat up very quickly and the battery would suffer very, very badly(based off battery lasting less than 2-3hrs). I currently am using the moto droid and it heats up while doing these tasks but not even close to the htc's i've owned, also the battery is great compared to the htc phones(i know its android compared to win-mo but just stating what i've experienced).

So has HTC gotten a handle on combining performance while making the phone last and not over-heat?

Two things on my mind right now that I need help with:

1) Any way to enable Gmail to view pictures "automatically" without me manually having to display pics in the emails?

2) Shortcut to silent the phone other than holding the piower button?

1. Couldn't find settings for this one.

2. Turn the phone over when it rings. (this is a cool feature and it works)

What if the phone is not ringing? I don't want to go into settings, put the phone in silent mode nor do I want to hold the power button and change the phone mode. Any other way in changing from mode to mode?

Try this. I had this widget on my Sprint Hero and have loaded it on this phone. This gives you direct access to change to silent/vibrate/Normal. Just place it in your SD card and use something like Astro File manager to install. It was created by HTC.

Once you install it you can add like this:
From a home screen + widget/Settings/profile widget.

I'm driving around in a car.

I would like to know this, too. That piower button is a bitch.

I wonder how long it's going to last. You use it to sleep, silence, power off and on. By far the weakest hardware on the phone.

Well one more thing. The big attraction on htc was replaceable batteries. I poppEd the screen twice and thought it was going to break the plastic snaps. Somebody better come up with a real 2100 battery because u will wear it out.

Note :I killed background data and I got 3 hours more batt life.

Missing Joystick - I have the Samsung Moment and it has the optical mouse or whatever you call it. I don't use it often but when I am moving around in text it's nice. I imagine some games use it as well but I don't have any that do.

I don't see a mouse thing (ball or optical) on the EVO.

Has anyone find it hard to live without this?

Nope! for texts you have arrow keys now. Don't really play to many games so nope not missing at all.

So what is with holding the power button down when the phones ringing? I guess I'll try it tomorrow cause my phone just got turned off. But are you saying when the phone is ringing you can hit the power button and you have options? I know before I could ignore and it would go straight to VM or I could just silence the ringer and it would still ring on the other persons end and then it would go to VM. I have to read the book too. I love the phone and have been staying up late everynight messing with something on it and reading all these forums. Tonight I saw all the scenes. It's an awesome phone.

Not when the phone is ringing.
If you hold the power button down you will get a menu for silent mode, Airplane mode, Vibe, Etc.

Hey guys - Not new to Sprint, but new to Android with my Evo. (and my girlfriend's Moment will be arriving any day now, as well)... As expected, perhaps, I have questions about said Evo! try to be specific; I'm not familiar with Android, as I said. If something I'm asking about requires rooting, I'd rather not, but I'm open to apps that do what I want if needed.

(Note: I've googled and I've looked through the forums a bit and have seen numerous options on some of these, or things for other phones but not the Evo.)

1. First things first: "Sliding to unlock" is the one thing I hate about all new electronic devices, and I want it to die in a fire. Please tell me there's something I can do to get rid of it. Edit: Just found No Lock. Brilliant!

2. Is Handcent SMS that much better than the built-in app? I haven't used either yet, but want a nice SMS app since that's what I do most on my phone.

3. Best alternative keyboard, especially for vertical orientation? the keys are a little bit tiny for my fat thumb. (I couldn't get a single letter correct on the Hero I tried out, so at least I'm thankful for the Evo's big screen)

4. The biggest source of multiple-answers I've found: What should I kill off, and how, that will eliminate crap I don't need or want and not harm what's left (i.e. getting rid of the Nascar app, etc)? Should I kill processes, or just stick with eliminating entire apps?

5. OK, I don't know how to really ask this... I don't know when or why I want location data on, off, etc. I want it on if and when i decide to use the GPS feature or a search for nearby stuff, but off otherwise. Can somebody help me figure that out?

6. Same as above but with always-on mobile data. I don't want it to be always on, but I don't want it to be manual-refresh all the time either. For instance, I want the weather to be updated realtime, that would be nice, but I only want my gmail to check for new mail manually.

I don't even think that's all, but I'll quit while I'm ahead for now =0)

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I like the stock messaging app in the Eco. I played with handset on a couple other devices an don't see any benefit.

I'm using Swipe normally but fLl back to the HTC app at work, I keep the phone in a zip-lock and can't slide around the screen.
The Evo's screen is large enough typing on qwerty isn't any issue.

There's no way to remote Sprint apps without rooting.

I saw an app somewhere tks would turn on GPS when called on then turn it back off.
Personal opinion from previous testing is turning it off does little for battery life, i that's what your concerned about. Imo turning off HOW and data would "cripple" the phones features.

First of all, this forum and it's members will be your new best friend! Welcome! I am also new to Android, but I think I can help you out with some of this.

1. Download No Lock free from the Market. Takes off the screen lock and you can use the power button or the volume button to wake up the screen.

2. I wasn't able to find Handcent, but I use ChompSMS and I love that it is so easily customizable. You can change it to chat style bubbles and change the colors of the screen, bubbles, and fonts. You can also download the Handcent Font Packs and use them with Chomp.

3. I downloaded Better Keyboard, but didn't keep it long because it didn't seem better to me. The keys weren't any bigger, so I don't think that will help you. I didn't like that you had to swipe to different keyboards for symbols and numbers. Have you tried using the spell correction, word completion, and prediction? Those might help you out. You might also try Swype. PM me if you want the link.

4. I can't personally answer that for you. I have decided not to use a Task Killer and haven't had any problems. My brother has an EVO too and Best Buy downloaded ATK on his phone and he doesn't have any problems either. So I think it may just be what you think is best for you. As far as deleting the Sprint Apps you don't want, you would have to root.

5. If you disable the GPS and open an App that uses it, it should ask you if you want to turn it on. At least that's what happened to me when I tried to use Sprint Navigation.

6. If you go to Settings> Accounts & sync, you can select what you want to automatically sync and what you want to sync manually. (ie email, news, stocks, weather)

I hope this helps, and I know there are a ton of other people here who will help you! Good luck and happy EVOing!

Wow that sounds awesome to speak your directions. I know before on Sprint you had to call a number and then speak. Are you talking about spoken directions with the Sprint or Google Nav? My friend said he used the Google Nav yesterday and really liked it.

Ordered my EVO from Sprint on Sunday and I received it today. I have to get over the fear of breaking something on it. I thought I was going to shatter the battery cover when I was taking it off.

First Android device for me so I'm sure I'll be back later with some questions.
