Root The I borked my SF support group thread

sk its actually a FILE disable_lagfix, just to clarify, at least thats my understanding and has always worked for me

Straight from Dirrk:

To remove voodoo open your /sdcard/voodoo folder and make a new directory named disable_lagfix and restart your phone.

Directory typically refers to a folder, as far as I know.

Sorry to contradict, but I also think it's a file:

HOW TO DISABLE VOODOO LAGFIX
1. Use Astro File Manager or Root Explorer app...open the app
2. Navigate to sdcard/Voodoo folder
3. Create a new blank FILE named disable_lagfix....NOT A FOLDER
4. Reboot phone

yeah for all i know folder will work, but ive only ever done file and its worked. a lot of irc questions about it always say file, but folder might work. if its worked for someone then great.

anyone else get folder to work?

:DThis is why this club exists. There really is a bunch of confusion over this specific subject. Some people say file others say folder. I think both camps have success and failure stories. That is folder users who say it worked but file didnt work and file users who say the folder didnt work. File users have borked as have folder users.
FWIW, I also subscribe to the belief it is a file.
Zennmaster's app also creates a file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814736
Now if a folder has worked for SK and others thats great too. Bottom Line always is whatever works. Having said that if someone asks me what to do I say file.

I actually created four folders :D lol, none of which was "disable_lagfix".

"disable lagfix" and "disable-lagfix"; one of each in the Voodoo folder and SD root. Which one did the trick? It's a mystery. However, after applying my four-pronged attack it unborked my phone. Ok, I did still get the Gallery FC'ing here and there for some reason... but the phone and everything else recovered.

I'm fairly certain that what happened was I had tried the complete uninstall method of Voodoo using the "original.mbr and stock.zip" files. I kept getting the "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (Invalid argument)" whenever I went into recovery mode either through CWM or not. So, I thought I'd try to kill two birds with one stone; get rid of the Invalid argument and completely get rid of Voodoo.

It didn't get rid of Voodoo but for some reason I either assumed it did or just overlooked it and forgot all about it.

Anyhow, I used this opportunity to go ahead and get another Fascinate as I had one with the red tint. BestBuy gave me a new one. What's great is that I did get one with the blue/green tint except it also has the slight red tint when I look dead on/perpendicular to the display. lol

Red and green. Hey, it's the holidays, so... yeah.

this may sound dumb, but since i never tried it when i borked my sf awhile back, but did anybody try flashing a voodoo kernel when they had the 0.00 storage issue after odin and not disabling lagfix?

not that im in a rush to go try it out :) but if the storage issue comes from restoring rfs when ext4 is still in place from voodoo, wouldnt flashing a voodoo kernel from your sdcard fix that issue? just a thought, could be way off base on that.

That might work, if you undo the lagfix and then reflash a new kernal, then use voodoo toggle to make sure that voodoo is enabled. I flashed several kernels after my recent restore, and the lag fix was never actually applied until I finally downloaded the toggle app used it to turn voodoo on. Then the lagfix was officially applied.

By the way, I'm still of the opinion, that at least with my phone, the overclock provides a more tangible increase in performance than the lag fix. I have yet to perceive a real benefit in the responsiveness of my phone when switching it on and off. Going from 800MHz to 1100 or 1200 made a noticeable improvement though.

yeah the consensus among many on irc is not to go with voodoo and that it offers a negligible increase in peformance but causes too many headaches. maybe its psychological for me, but not having it on makes me feel like my phone is superman flying around without a cape  but thats me.

Yeah, there are a lot of anti-voodoo guys on IRC. But I have to conclude these are also the same guys creating so many of these panic threads over at xda. I mean shoot its basically just camping out on step 11 of this club. Which again is fine. Im not forcing voodoo down anyone's throat. Seems everything coming out now is both voodoo and non-voodoo. Also who knows what birdman's new voodoo will be. Maybe they have a v.3 now?!?
Still I don't know anyone who thinks RFS is a good idea. You can only do so many of these so called optimizations.
Again its nice we have choices. Some like voodoo, some dont. Some OC, some dont.

yeah I would def say thats just you on that one ;)

haha, quite possibly :). i just find it hard to believe that voodoo doesnt help, maybe its just the way its ported to the fascinate and its awful source code from samsung. voodoo appears to be almost gospel (well not for EVERYONE, but still) on the i-9000, captivate, and vibrant which are all so similar, but maybe not for the epic and fascinate.

the epic devs and supercurio (from the voodoo project) agree that it offers no tangible benefit to the epic with how its setup so they havent bothered bringing it there, and the fascinate and epic are closer to each other than any other sgs device (minus the mesmorize, which is a googled fascinate basically) so who knows.

the z4mod stuff looks promising if they can ever get it to work though

ha, borked earlier today....first time voodoo unistall locked up on me....45+ mins and didnt reboot, had to batt pull and bootloop. manually unistalled voodoo in adb, pushed the stock kernel, restored nandroid and was fine

it was actually a little bit "fun"

Well, plus with some of the Voodoo kernels you get to change the start animation. I like that, for sure. And the lower voltage is worth it, too. Many more benefits than just speed.

It's kind of a nice feeling of triumph to be able to "bring your phone back" like that, isn't it? :D

Hi,

My name is Skip, and I am a bork-a-holic. I first borked a device in 1981 when I took an IBM System/370 mainframe down, and never looked back. I am happy to see such a thriving community of tinkerers!

My latest bork was earlier today when I borked my SF while trying to extend the backlight timeout on the hard keys...

It has now been 5 hours since my last bork... I am taking it one minute at a time.

:)

Hi Skip. Nice to see another someone with a few miles on the tires ;)
Great sharing above. Needless to say you've earned this for your borking efforts:

Hey, is this club just for Cell phones or does it extend to computers as well ?

If so I might just be considered a DIAMOND Member. Commodore 64 anyone ?

ACtually my first phone phone bork was when I was with AT&T ( Sorry to use vulgar language) and I had a Sony w580i. Top sony forums was the hangout and spent alot more time and hacking there than I care to admit. Damn that was one heck of a fun hacking phone though. AHHH the good ole days :)

Yeah we're just a small support group for the SF specifically; although many of us can be found at [H], so we feel you on the PC tweakin' too. People who tinker with anything usually tinker with everything :D

yeah i dont tinker with computers anymore (minus the random fan or hd replacement) but when i was younger i used to like to install car stereos/systems. thug-life

my parents did NOT enjoy coming home and see the insides of doors on the ground and wires everywhere.

Its in the blood ;)
I must admit my own PC modding, tweaking, hacking, OC days are largely behind me as well. Shoot I dont even upgrade my video card drivers much anymore. 5 years ago I religiously was DLing beta drivers every day and constantly had the side of my case off for whatever reason.
I think I've only been inside my PC once in the past 90 days and that was just to get the dust out

OK I'm getting some extra chairs and refreshments ready; I think our next meeting will be a well attended one. As we speak jt is working on the next version of voodoo, this one is the port of the beta5 which is on the main voodoo site. This will require the uninstalling of the current voodoo v.2. New club members here we come
