The "I just got my Nexus 7!" thread

Yes, it should have had a power adapter.. A rather funky shaped one. Sorry yours didn't. :(

After unlocking and rooting mine, one of the first things I did was load the Amazon App Store to get my FAOTD fix.
You had to unlock and root to install the Amazon App Store? Tell me more... Do you also use the Amazon Kindle App with it?

Congrats Cafe! So is that the only reason you came stateside? ;)
He he, no. I came back to be normal and relax for a few months. The GN7 is just a nice bonus.

No, but unlocking the bootloader wipes everything off the device, so I didn't set anything up until I did that. My reader is/was the Sony Reader so I was in that ecosystem. I never really used the Kindle app, so I have no books there, though I may try as there are a few titles I'd like to get my hands on. I also like smashwords.com as folks there pretty much self publish and most titles are $2-3 and available in a ton of formats. I've read dozens of books from there that are just as good as you can find from a publishing house.

Understand now. What I'll do is install it all on my GST 8.9 first and do a Titanium Backup so I can have the same content on two devices and put it on the GN7 whenever I feel like it ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I had only been using the Amazon Kindle app before. Good to know about the Amazon App Store as well.

Nooooooo............
Sorry to hear that. Is the bleed in the area with the raised screen?

The top 2/3 of the left hand side of the screen is raised. Then the light bleed is centered around the top left corner.

I can't find a screwdriver small enough to try tweaking the screws either, unfortunately.

I bought my 16GB from the $30 OfficeMax deal. Ordered it last Thursday night (~7:30pm PDT) and it arrived yesterday (Monday).

I had convinced myself for years that tablets were a niche tweener product that I had no use for. They would seriously have to step up its productivity capabilities for me to consider one, as I don't have much use for a media consumption device in the form of a glorified smartphone. I told myself I'd only consider a tablet when they are viable laptop replacements (which the Windows 8 Surface seems to be going for). But at $237 shipped, the N7 was inexpensive enough to be an impulse purchase for me. Google really got it right with the pricing of the Nexus 7.

I'm very familiar with the iPad 2, as I use it every time I visit my parents. I found the ergonomics of it very awkward. The bigger screen looks very good when browsing the web, playing games, or watching videos. I can appreciate the extra real estate with a touch device, as I don't need to be nearly as precise with my button presses as my smart phone. For reference, I had the iPhone 3G --> Evo 4G --> Evo 4G LTE (current).

But there were two major gripes that were deal-breakers for me in the 10-inch form factor -- namely it's heft and text input. The iPad was relatively light, but not so much so that it "melts away" while I use it. Inevitably, I would begin to feel the weight after about an hour of web-browsing. The text input is very awkward because the screen is too big to type with my thumbs. I would need to either lay it on my lap (not very sturdy), or get a keyboard dock (which defeats the purpose of the tablet being a touch-device).

After playing with the 7-inch tablet all night, this seems to be a great compromise between screen size and usability. I can thumb-type, so text input isn't a chore like it is on the 10-inch tablet. The weight and bulk of this is not as cumbersome. And the smaller size makes this easy to carry around with me everywhere. There are times where I wish for a bit more screen size, but not enough to sacrifice the other usability advantages.

I'm still getting used to the stock Jelly Bean OS. I've come from Gingerbread Sense and lately ICS Sense, so there are some things I need to re-learn. I will agree with most impressions that things are buttery smooth. Android has truly become a mature and polished OS in the 4.0+ iterations. App transitions are lightning quick and multi-tasking is pleasure. The hardware does a great job of doing what you want when you want it -- no hang ups, minimal loading, no sluggishness. It makes the hardware "get out of the way" and lets you have a purer user experience. In short, I'm still learning the quirks of this Android iteration, but so far so good.

I was nervous about the hardware given the reports of screen creaking and raised glass. I'm pleased to report that I don't have such issues. The left side of the screen seems to be about 0.001mm higher than the right under intense scrutiny, but VERY well within reasonable manufacturing tolerances. I love the feel of the rubber-leather hybrid, so I'm hesitant to put a case on this device because of it.

The lack of storage space is an issue for me. I personally love to load my own music on my devices, and like to pack as much as possible. I keep a 160GB iPod Classic around because of this. My phone is loaded with a 64GB card that is full -- 99% of which is music. Google's vision of compelling people to shift toward cloud storage is working on me, as I've begun to load mp3s onto my Google Music account. Hopefully, this is not as big of an inconvenience as I'm imagining. The fact that most of my media consumption will be shackled by the availability of WiFi is going to be a major obstacle.

All in all, I'm VERY satisfied with my purchase so far. Just wanted to drop a few thoughts. Sorry for the long-winded post.

Last night i was working on my tablet and all of a sudden i noticed something strange. I was sort of pinching the tablet to grab it, towards the center on the left hand side, i noticed a little click click noise as if the back was not properly shut closed..i did not think much about this, but when i started typing, the keys on my keyboard started acting up a little bit..

Has anyone experienced this on yours?

Why do I feel I have been neglected since I posted the above??:(

The edge of the tablet on the left side (the one that protrudes to the surface) seems flimsy and ready to fall apart... I experienced this again last night...

Sorry godsdragon, that sometimes happens when you are the last post on a page. I the click does sound like the back cover wasn't on all the way. I'm not sure if this would affect the keys though. Are you using the stock keyboard? You could also try a reboot and see if it is just an unrelated hiccup.

Not yet. I always wait a couple weeks. I haven't even rooted my GS3 yet. But like I said, I'll just backup my apps + data from my SGT 8.9 and move it over when I'm ready.

But yes, it will wind up rooted :D

I guess the issue ismore with the outside hardware Unforgiven.. The outside top of the tablet is not fitting tightly with the bottom part of it...
I will try a reboot. Thanks for the advice.. :)

That is a common issue folks are having. You will probably want to do a warranty replacement.:o
