Usually, one thinks of those black things on a motherboard when chips come up.
Those are packages.
They usually contain one chip, an integrated circuit cut off a wafer during semiconductor manufacturing.
An MCM is a multi chip module - a package containing more than one chip.
Usually, your ram and eMMC storage ("rom" ) are contained in a single MCM rather than two separate packages, for example.
An SoC - system on (a) chip - is like taking a slice of a motherboard with many chips and building it on to one big chip. Typical SoC packages include the processor or the collection of radio gear.
The X8 appears to be an MCM containing a processor SoC and two other processing chips, all in one package - based on statements made by Motorola. We'll know for sure when we see a proper teardown, but I'm betting on it being what I described.
just for clarity (I work at verizon as a sales rep) our commisions are the exact same for ALL phones... the way the system works is its either a smartphone or a basic phone.
now with that said, we have TONS of reps who are only comfortable selling what they know and wont even discuss with a customer anything else. i have 2 guys in the store that i work in who either point to iPhones or the galaxy s4 because they lack knowledge entirely on any other android phone so don't know how to pitch it or recommend it for a customers needs.
all you have experienced in that situation is a lazy rep who doesn't want to do homework and learn about our products.

Well said Covert, and I shouldn't lump all VZW reps together based on my experience. It's sad that VZW as an organization (probably all phone retailers) don't try harder to train reps to overcome the impression of bias. It is just poor customer service.

I'll probably be going Maroon and Black but that's really only because i prefer darker phones. I really should be going for Maroon and White as well.
Although we'll probably be told it's Burgundy, wine red, dark red or some such other dark red color. They all are the same I'm convinced.
I am on Verizon and I will wait. As I understand, the 32GB is only available in MotoMaker, which won't be up for Verizon until November. And I NEED 32GB.

I've had a cell phone with Cingular->AT&T since the end of high school. I really don't care about the customizability but i figure i may as well take advantage of it because i can.

It didn't convince me to come back to the X; I had already decided that. But it DOES reinforce and confirm WHY I came to my decision.
So no G2 for me. As much as I like it, I personally believe that the X will fare me better in the long run for what I want it to do. And I will wait to get the X I want, in the capacity I want and the external customization I want.
And I shall be happy

The S4 is not from last year, additional low power cores are used to expand the user experience rather than use a quad and take more power, the display is not PenTile so it's true 720p, and motherboard customizations can't happen without considering radio performance.
I thought that the part where they opened dozens of web pages and didn't go beyond the need for 2 cores was interesting.
The explanation why it's running 4.2.2 was excellent.

I've been lurking in this thread for a while now but I wanted to just chime in that I really appreciated that CNET interview article. I bought the GNex the day it came out on Verizon several years ago, so I am under contract until then, so I can wait for customizations to come to the masses.
Im curious about switching to T-Mobile. I'm hoping I can buy this phone off contract and try it out on T-Mobile, and maybe swap in an ATT SIM if T-Mobile turns into T-Maybe. Will that work with this phone? Will I be limiting myself from an LTE/HSPA+ aspect doing that? The radio compatibility stuff can be pretty confusing for me.
I really wish the phone supported XI charging. I was hoping my next phone would have that. That said, this seems like a really exciting phone to me. I want to hold it in my hands so bad. I'm trying not to get too excited though. 2 years ago I was getting excited about the Bionic at this time...

Yeah, my current plan is to jump ship though. I plan on closing out my Verizon account and try another carrier for the first time since Suncom in 2004.
I may have some overlap and have 2 phones for a while. I'm hoping if I get an unsubsidized phone and use it on T-Mobile, if it doesn't work out I can try it on AT&T or sell it on eBay and go crawling back to VZW.

Actually today is the day Gnexers can get their early upgrade. All you have to do us call a Verizon CSR and ask them to move your date to today. They will do this within one week of your early upgrade date.
Doesn't really help me because the Maxx isn't out until the 20th. But I can Pre-order now.

I will confirm this as someone who got their GNexus on launch day and just checked my Verizon. You can easily check your upgrade date through the MyVZW website.
Getting more excited for a new phone everyday.
