The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

I missed that was confirmed - still weird, unless it has to do with the international GSM market as well as hitting the note for ATT.

Thought sure I'd read that the dev X would appear for VZW and ATT though - and that would be unlocked.

It's a confusing day for me. :o

Yeah that had supposedly been confirmed too. Still not sure why they need the gpe but they said it was coming.

When I watched his show it sounded to me like he was just repeating second or third hand information he had been told, not necessarily information that he knew was correct.

I heard rumors that an Xperia Z Google play phone might be on the way. I wonder if that one will be more open source since Sony seems to be more friendly to it than other OEM's are.

I really hope sony do that. I have a lot of love for sony phones and yeah theyve always been good at pushing their stuff back upstream *still dreaming of a waterproof sony nexus with amoled display* :)

I've yet to find any proper references to this beyond "sources say," usually when it's real sources inside the company are cited -

A 'Google Play' version of the Moto X is coming soon | The Verge

Someone who thinks as I do -

Why the Moto X Google Play edition doesn't make sense

Date unavailable, price unavailable. I suppose it could happen. Might help T-Mo customers if they don't have it by then.

And the mfg cost keeps changing - and I'm not sure that anyone outside of Motorola accounting knows that figure either.

I'm starting to think if I actually want this phone I'm going to have to sign my life away with AT&T for 2 years.

I think I can.

A Developer Edition with none of the features intact would make for a pretty dull X, IMO. And if it comes with all the X features, what are you going to do? Root & ROM it? Then you lose the features! No, something tells me to just personalize my Verizon X, pay full retail, and not wait for the Developer Edition. It just wouldn't make sense to me to do so.

I'll take 3 gig ram, faster octacore processor, more. pixels. I'm goofy that way. One thing I do agree with. You'll get better battery life. If that is the be all end all no question Moto is king... as long as you never want to change the battery. I have a Motorola phone now. I don't hate Motorola. I would prefer the inferior hardware in the Note 3.

Have fun with that. My Galaxy Nexus has 1 GB RAM, and has YET to run low. It has taken everything I've ever thrown at it with rare good grace. So what would 2 or even 3 GB RAM do for me? Sit there and be impressive, I suppose...

As far as octacore processor, the Moto X actually HAS 8 processors in the X8 chipset. Some are dedicated to a specific function, some low-power, some not. And Moto engineers stress-tested a quad-core processor and could never get more than 2 to light up: so what will an octa-core processor do for me? Sit there and be impressive, I suppose...

Not to slam or attack you, but I'm not seeing a reason to chase specs anymore. I personally believe it's time to chase functionality. Samsung is a great device... and they're really good at throwing bells & whistles in their phones; but I've found that half those things aren't really useful in everyday life. The Moto X, on the other hand, has functionality that I will use every day. Multiple times a day.

The Note 3 will be very capable. But I'm sold on the X :)

A Developer Edition is the stock phone with the bootloader unlocked.

Lots of advantages to rooting and leaving the rom alone.

I certainly agree! But if the Dev Edition is pure vanilla Android without the software features, I'll have zero interest in it. That's what I was trying to articulate :)

I noticed a lot of reviewers are saying the Moto X camera seems to lack contrast and sharpness... I wonder if thats something that could be fixed with a custom camera app or possibly a firmware update from Motorola.

That's a GPE or a Nexus, not a Developer Edition.

Yeah i think one of the carriers did a Developer Edition sgs3 and it had all the features, just an unlocked bootloader (ive never experienced a locked bootloader nor do i pretend to understand what it really means lol). I dont understand why ANY device has a locked one.. seems insane

Good morning, folks!

The bootloader tells the phone what to do when it first starts up (computers are really stupid things with no idea what they even are until they're told). By locking the bootloader, carriers make sure that the phone does what THEY want it to do, instead of allowing us to root and install a ROM (custom operating system) and letting the phone do what WE want it to do.

There are ways around a locked bootloader (i.e., bootstrap programs) but an unlocked phone is always better. And that's a very simplified version but I hope it helps :)

Sure if the Dev edition comes with all the bells and whistles but just unlocked, I'm all over it :D

I agree! I'm not going to spend upwards of $600 for a phone like the X without all these features we are seeing in all the reviews...No Wayyy!

I already tried that with both the GPE of the GS4 and ONE and ended up sending them both back! Yes vanilla Android is very nice and slick looking, but with those 2 GPE phones you loose alot of the stuff the phones were known for, yes some of it was gimmicky, but some was still cool and very useful.

And the X looks to have just about 90% of useful features without being gimmicky. I think I'm just going to go with a custom at&t X from moto maker and call it a day! It looks to be as stock as one could really get directly from a carrier anyway, the UI looks pretty stock looking IMO. That's good enough for me right now until maybe the Nexus 5 comes out and knocks my socks off, otherwise I'll make due with the X until something newer and fresher comes out either before or after the holidays....Moto Nexus anyone???
