The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

I've had two flip phones that showed time when closed.

I'd grown so accustomed on smartphones to pressing the power button to check time (I'm looking at two watches on my desk I'll probably never wear again) that I added a proximity gesture app to turn the phone on just for that.

And I've always repressed it, but I know that every time I turn on my phone just to check the time, I've just awoken everything that wants to sync when awake when that's not my intention - so, I'm always getting the screen turned off asap.

Being able to use my phone as my pocket watch without pushing buttons or adding apps - a feature I didn't think that was all that important at first, but the more I think about it, the more common sense I see in that.

Just noticed this -

Moto X won't be a "Google Play edition" phone

Exactly as I thought. :p

It's basically stock anyways - and GPE is just stock with the most important hardware features retained (see the One and SGS4).

Which I've noted all along - is exactly how the X seems to be.

Only diff is in the update cycle and I've yet to see that making a difference on the GPE phones beyond just claims.

Yeah saw that earlier today, makes a lot more sense.

What do you mean about GPE update claims? The one and GS4 both are on 4.3 now with the GPE, so it definitely helped them out.

While the Moto X is nearly stock it is still on 4.2.2, so it is a little behind. What this tells me is that the Moto X on the play store will most likely be updated about as fast as the other GPE phones because lack of carriers involved.

Carriers seem to slow everything down

By "just claims" I was pretty unclear - as per usual when I typing and doing 6 other things.

Sorry, my bad. :o

I think there's a false expectation that GPE devices update as fast a Nexus. As we've seen, those can update faster than the stock models (especially with the carrier chicken dances thrown in) but GPE != Nexus.

~~~~~~~~
There weren't big price cuts on the GPE One or SGS4.
I think the idea that Google will violate the Motorola boundary and price this like a Google Nexus is just not going to happen.
That would not only create a losing battle with the carriers, it would slice wounds into the Open Handset Alliance with two key players that would never heal.
In my opinion.
I'd love to be wrong on that, but so far my batting average on the X has been pretty high. :(
~~~~~~~~

I'm on Sprint, so I'll be waiting to see what happens later on the MotoMaker for a 32 GB version I can use.

Agree completely. No way they lower price.

Also new leak has bestbuy releasing Verizon moto x on the 29th

For those who missed it on Twitter, here's a Moto X pic, freezing a rushing roller coaster in time:

Unless this has been heavily enhanced, I am impressed. Either the reviewers who poo-poo the camera on the X apparently got a lemon, or they had bad settings. I can live with this :)

Yeah saw that and it looks great. But I put more weight in the people reviewing than the team marketing the camera personally.

Though I'm sure it still can take some really good pics

I'm really expecting the camera s/w to be a dog and will look forward to seeing how pics look with Camera JB+.

One review comment that said it for me - you have to give it time to meter to get a good exposure.
