The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

This is truly unfortunate. This kind of shenanigans is what will put a dark cloud over this phone launch and the "new" Motorola. If they can't deliver on highly promoted features like the engraving what else do we have to look forward to? They promised out of the box customizations unlike the industry has seen before. And we get this 5 days before launch? Sad.

I will be interested to hear the initial reports from the first wave of Motomaker buyers to see how the phones turn out and function. Kinda glad now I am waiting till the full roll out to all carriers of Motomaker. Let them get ALL the bugs worked out.

Kind of nervous about receiving mine in the first wave of custom shipments now. Especially with some of the reports of test units having the loose buttons and now this.

For $677 after taxes, the 32 will be worth it for me, because I'll be able to stay on ATT prepaid for 60/month and I'll still come out $400 ahead vs if I went post paid and did a 2 year contract.

Post paid is a JOKE for pricing.

since its NOT an LCD screen, screen size doesn't matter, ONLY resolution matters when it comes to battery life, so a 4.0 inch screen and a 5.5 inch screen both using AMOLED technology drain the same power if they are both 720p resolution...

but i do see what you're saying about the battery difference, just wanted to make sure we are aware the larger screen is NOT more of a drain in any way

I don't believe this statement is true.

But what you seem to fail to notice is that bigger screen will have large pixel than smaller screen even at the same resolution. On AMOLED screen, larger pixel means larger LED emitting area, hence more power to light it up.

I'm also puzzled that Ultra has more battery life as listed on Verizon site. Screen and battery size don't make sense for that.

I'm not sure that makes sense. If that was true then you could make a 60 inch AMOLED screen with 1 single pixel and it would use the same amount of power as a 4 inch screen with 1 pixel?! That seems to ignore the laws of physics. The more light you are putting out, the more energy it takes to generate that light... I don't think there is a way around that.

Previous two posters pointed out what I was about to post. Same number of pixels on different size screens use different amounts of power due to the different sizes of pixels. The Droid Ultra's pixels are larger than the Moto X's pixels; consequently, each pixel uses more power. The difference between a 4.7" and a 5" screen's pixels size will be very small and the power usage difference will be small, but the larger screen will use more power.

It's the magic of the Verizon Droid! lol It's simply Verizon fudging the numbers and taking advantage of the very vague description of "mixed usage". They wanted the appearance that the Droid line was slightly better in battery life so they could use it as a selling point to the consumers that don't know better. I guarantee the Moto X will outlast the Droid Ultra by over an hour given the same mixed usage rules. OR an extra 15 minutes of screen on time.

How do they define "mixed usage"? They need to set a standard for measurement. Like loop a streaming movie until the phone dies. The way I see it, this is only a good thing for prospective Moto X buyers. If they want to steer customers to the Droid Ultra, that's fine. Just means the Moto X will be less popular and more likely to come down in price. Considering I have to buy full retail to keep my unlimited, I want it to drop as much as possible.

Mixed usage is supposed to model the average user's day on a phone. No user is going to stream a movie all day every day. They try to get a real world estimate of how long you could go in your normal routine before a charge. Other sites like engadget do movie loop tests. The X has ranged from 9 to 11 hours in the ones I've seen. Even these tests can be skewed depending on screen brightness and the colors reproduced in the movie...example...a Batman movie would play MUCH longer than say...Toy Story due to the overall amount of dark scenes vs bright scenes.

Agreed - that one you mentioned is Engadget's test. (edit - ninja'd lol)

One thing all pre-release threads have in common - they end when the phone releases. :)

In the coming days, I'm thinking of preserving some of our posts here into ongoing discussions, and separate by MotoMaker, the pre-orders, the camera, etc etc -

- or -

- we can rename this one and let it roll a little while longer. That's not going to work well though.

As soon as they're all out, the Moto X/Droid discussions will have to go to the Device Comparisons forum.

This isn't a Verizon-specific device and while the comparisons are important for many - they're really just not relevant for many others ok.

So - this is a bit of a warning on that, ok to chime in here, ok to drop me or your favorite staffer a line about how you think it ought to roll up in here. :)

Moto X vs. Droid Ultra: A real-world comparison | Computerworld Blogs

This is a real-world comparison from someone who has used both for a week. I found it quite enlightening.

Factor in the scattered UI changes and extra mess of bloatware baked into the Droid Ultra, and -- well, pardon my bluntness, but the device looks kind of like a Moto X that's been vomited on by a Verizon monster.

Favorite part of the review.

lol thats the most biased review i've read in a long while haha... the exaggeration is nuts. there are NO UI changes except for the addition of Droid ZAPP and the command center, thats it, nothing else. the X does win in design comfort but the MAXX is actually one of the most comfortable phones to hold right now that is available for verizon... very easy to hold.

Granted I haven't held the MAXX yet, but I feel like my Galaxy Nexus is big enough to hold.

I can't believe many people are going to be deciding on the X vs Ultra. It's the X vs the Maxx where decisions will be made. The Maxx has 3 features the X doesn't aside from the personal preference in screen size and capacitive vs on screen buttons.

Battery, Storage, and Wireless Charging.

While I agree, I would personally go with the X or the Maxx, there Ultra is basically the same as the X. Same price, same specs, the Ultra has a little bigger screen(most wont care about the small ppi difference) the price is what most people care about.

:(:o:):D Chi Town Moto X Anticipators head over to Twitter now.

Okay, okay, taking a look at the Maxx with an open mind.

But after 2 years of on-screen soft keys, now I shudder at the thought of capacitive buttons!

I couldn't agree more. It is one of the things that drives me nuts about Android. I wish they could force soft keys on everyone. I own the One now and I don't even know what is going on with that thing.

I feel like someone should start a pool on when VZW will announce the 29th release date or if they will just push it back and have to defend themselves against masses of angry cell users.

Well, I won't be picking my X up on Launch Day anyhow... I'll be impatiently waiting for MotoMaker to open up to all carriers. I can't live on 16GB. Can't do it.

So I'll be customizing my phone and giving it the whole treatment (whenever).
