The Punny Side of Life

TV"s used vacuum tubes, including the screen. Hence a "set" of tubes to later become the "boob tube" (in some cases "idiot box").

Good explanation. Searching things out it's correct. This started from a telephone set and took off from there.

According to Webster: an apparatus of electronic components assembled so as to function as a unit

So if that is the case, I'm typing on a computer set, I play music on my synthesizer set, when I play my guitar I use an amplifier set, I nuke food in the microwave oven set, listen to music on my radio set, glance up at the digital clock set to see if it's lunchtime yet, and so on.

So my question is why is the TV called a set and not my computer, synth, amp, microwave, radio, clock, audio mixer, sonic maximizer, FX unit, digital walkman, and other apparatuses called sets?

(I had to look up the plural of apparatus)

When lunchtime comes I'll set the table and set my bottom down and enjoy a nice meal.

Lol (checking plurality)
I think you'll find that setting and sitting are two different things. As for why one thing is called a "set" and other things are not, perhaps that can be traced back to colloquial speech en mass.
