Root thinking about root

Im pretty new to the android scene so please excuse my ignorance. With that said im thinking about rooting my DX I like the idea of being able to remove ads, remove verizons bloatware and a host of other things that become possible with root but I have a few questions before I pull the trigger

1. Will the phones user interface change dramatically? (Home screens, how I navigate the phone etc. What will change)

2. What exactly are custom ROMs I have read quite a few threads that try to explain but im just not exactly clear on what they accomplish

3. If I do mess up how do I make sure I can set everything back to how it was before my attempt to root

Any other advise for a first time rooter is much appreciated I want to learn as much as I can before proceeding so give me anything you can think of lol

Thanks in advanced =]]

1 Will not change at all
2 Custom ROMs give you a choise of what you really want to run on your phone. Less bloat,
faster speed..etc
3 Check thread on how to unbrick my phone :)

Your best bet if you're going to root, is to install recovery and Rom Manager (easier to backup), then make a backup that you can use to get the next OTA update.

The nice thing about roms, is they have all the junk removed and are deodexed (so you can install themes). As long as you have a backup to restore to get the next update, you're good. You also should consider installing Titanium Backup as a file backup.

You can never have enough backups.

Everyone used to be new to root. I was. When I was, I was afraid to ask questions because I was already a phone guide, here, go figure. ;)

I want to encourage you to ask questions without concern. Personally, I encourage root newbies to understand sbf (restoring in case your phone bricks (freezes)) first before they theme. Sometimes, if when you theme, you forget a step, you can freeze yourself up. SBF undoes that.

You're among friends here. As questions and we'll direct you to the right info or tell you personally. :D

WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ROOT! w00t!!

Thank you for the quick replys everyone they help more than you know.. onelast question if I root will all my contacts apps etc stay put?

Im looking at Z4 root right now it has an option for a temporary root and a permanate root what's the differance and which one do I want im thinking permanate but I want to be sure

Temp root goes away after a reboot.

Permanent root survives a reboot.

I see no reason to use #1 unless you only use root on occasion. I use mine every day and most backup programs will use root to backup system files, given the opportunity.

Okay root completed! Im sure im gonna have alot of questions in the coming days. I will keep them confined to this thread thanks for you help guys.. im gonna go play with this a little bit... anyone have any warnings lol?

So 24 hours with my root iv got all my backups in place and iv been tryin to soak up all the knowledge I can off the forums but I have a quick question not sure if its stupid or not so bare with me..

Is there anyway for me to deodex without the use of a computer?

Also when new system updates come available am I correct in saying that I will need to restore to my first backup, unroot then install update or am I way off? What's the process for installing new system updates?

Again thank you all for all of your help! For real.

Always remember there is no such thing as a stupid question...... only stupid people who ask questions.

lol, I'm joking.

Personally, I wouldn't bother deodexing manually. Just about every ROM out there you upload will automatically deodex for you. It's just one less thing you have to do/could potentially screw up. But if you want to because you want to experiment in themeing without installing a custom ROM, then I think you'll need a computer. But I'm not forsure because I've never manually deodexed.

I understand rooting may risk allowing malware accessing system resources and root access. Is that true? If so, can I temp root to disable at&t bloatware?

Verizon bloatware, yes. The Droid X is on Verizon. Just be careful to be aware of what you download and don't open email files you are not expecting to get. Don't worry about it, Just be careful.

Just don't use 928 to deodex with the guide I posted if you choose to deodex it will brick your x ,you have to either manual deodex or deodex through a rom

Maybe u should post that in the thread...i bricked mine today...

How do u do them through a rom? Follow your instructions again?

Installed apex running awesome only problem is figuring out which ROM I wanna play with next lol.

I was totally psyching myself out the install was easy as pie! Any newbies that are apprehensive about rooting or installing ROMs my advice to you is read the guides and JUST DO IT!

Thanks so much everyone!

lol I have been thinking about rooting my phone (with your comment I am thinking about it even more) For those people who know me they know I can mess anything up! I only want to root for the fonts and the themes.

Is there a Root for Dummies manual out there anywhere? lol just kidding.
