Root thinking of rooting

I've had my OV for about a year (14 months or so) and I've briefly read through the all things root thread. I have a few questions...
Will all hardware functions work with the lastest rom.

is there a concise (by the numbers) instuctional guide?

.. is there a app that will allow me to use a bluetooth keyboard?

The main reason I've decided to root is I'm feedup with apps having permission to read contacts and whatnot.

Thanks for any help given.

I know the question has been asked , but they go back almost a year and I'm sure there are newer roms.

droidborg, I have moved this thread into the 'all things root' portion of this forum, since I think that the folks that have already rooted the OV will most likely be the ones who can best answer your rooting questions.:)

All hardware functions will work except that one button above the camera button doesn't.
The Bluetooth keyboard I think might work with CM7/9

Yes, I've rooted my OV, my OS, my OM, my mom's OM.....
I made the unbrick guides for the OM+, OV, and the LG Motion 4G.
Ive helped unbrick OM+, OM, OV, and OS.

great guides, i have read them on ac forum and this guy knows his stuff!

BACKUP YOUR STUFF and do a NANDROID !!!!!!!!!!!!
definitely root, and flash the harmonia 2.09 first. there are no bugs that i have run into on it.
i would also suggest gingersnap its very nice but i do see the occasional fc

there are a lot of other great roms up and coming (cm10 and ics based stuff), and they all have good qualities.

Ok well I reckoned the first hurdle is learning the language.
Then find out what version of android I have on my phone. And screen.

Will the backup restore my phone to its current state?
What of my contacts. How do I get them back on my phone after I root it. use google sync?

Restoring a backup will return it to the state it was when the backup was made.
As for your contacts, sign back.into Google and your contacts will synch back to your phone within no.more than 5 minutes.....text messages and apps should be backed up with titanium backup from the Play Store (must be rooted first)

Follow this guide: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-how-simplified-root-recovery-custom-rom.html

Once you root the phone, you will install a custom recovery. Your recovery is where you have the option to backup (make a nandroid). There is a free program on the market called AFV (android file verifier) by Scary Alien. This will confirm your nandroid backups. I always use mybackup pro to save apps before flashing. Finally, once your backup is complete, flash away....be warned....flashing is very addicting!!!!

Since you are new to rooting, i would suggest that you read the sticky^ "DO NOT FACTORY RESET YOUR ROOTED PHONE. "

Are we allowed to post links to Youtube videos? I watched one that seems to do a good job of explaining/showing how to root an Optimus V. I was wondering if I could get opinions about whether it's a good one to follow. For a non-techie like me, watching a step-by-step like the one I watched would really help.

Yes, you are allowed to post links to anywhere EXCEPT anything that is questionable as to appropiateness, off topic-ness, etc.

No posting anything innappropiate, off-topic, or something that could offend someone.

This forum is friendly to other forums (even if they're not friendly back) and websites.

If you are making your first post, you cannot post any links until you have a post count of 1.

That's how you root your phone.

Sometimes gingerbreak doesn't work the first time, it might take 4or5 tries but it will work.
I don't really remember, but i think you should pull the battery after each time you try. I got lucky and got root first try.

If it takes longer than 12minutes ,then pull battery and try again.

@ThisIsGoofy ...go to settings >about phone >baseband version, if it ends in zv4 or zv5 you can use gingerbreak, if you have zv9 update, gingerbreak won't work.

OK OK This is very good. Very good indeed.

First I gave you all a thanks. Your replies have given me the confidence to do this.
I'll post the following incase any of you see any redflags I should be aware of.

I have

Android 2.2.1

Baseband Ver. ZV4

Kernel Version 2.6.32.9

Build No. FRG83

SW Ver. VM670ZV4

HW Ver. 1.2

But I don't know which screen I have, need to re read the guide to find that out.

Thanks for the HU about not resetting Factory defaults after the phone is rooted.
But I should reset before I flash and root. as pointed out in the You Tube video.

So I'll get all my stuff backed up and save it to disk. Then factory reset.

One question about updates from Virgin.
What if they try to send me the VZ9 update after I root.?

Thanks again

All 2.2.1 OS V's have ZV4 baseband and the Novatek screen and drivers.
You can flash/install anything made for the V.

If you update to ZV9 after rooting, you will lose root. There are ways around it though

The best thing to do if you want to Update at a later date is to save your stock backup you make when you first root and install a custom recovery and make a backup in the recovery. Later, after you have updated and rooted with a custom recovery, you can install this backup to get your system back to the ZV4 baseband but still have the ZV9 radio.

EDIT: Also you should take the time to get your AAA and ESN code off the phone and write it down. Look at the sticky ^

Hi there.

Just to let you know I didn't get to rooting because of a job that came up on Saturday and I'll be at it for another week

droidborg,

I just rooted my phone for the first time. I too have a gen 1 phone (novatek screen). That I bought new from Target in Sept of 2011. This is how easy it was for me.

-I downloaded and installed the phone drivers from the LG website
-I downloaded superoneclick from cnet (I did it there because you cannot virus scan the file because it technically is a virus, so I wanted a known entity to download from)
-plug your phone into the USB slot on your computer
-turn on usb debugging via settings>applications>development>USB debugging
-unmount the SD card via settings>SD card & phone storage>Unmount SD card
-disable your anti-virus, I use Norton and disabled for 15 min.
-extract the superoneclick ZIP file
-run the superoneclick .exe file
-click root
-don't touch anything, your phone will restart and make some noises when it reconnects to the USB system.
-superoneclick will ask you if you want to test, I did so.
-it said it was successful, I closed superoneclick and deleted it and all the files it extracted (you may have to kill a system process to get it to delete I believe it is called "adb")
-restart your anti-virus protection.

(on your phone)
-open superuser and go to preferences, scroll all the way down and click Su binary v3.x.x.x, this will prompt you to update superuser.
-I then powered down, and restarted to ensure root stuck, and it has.

Total time to root was less that 2 minutes. The whole process took me 10 minutes. I am currently only rooted. At some point soon I am going to flash a ROM.

There is a video on youtube from Lifehacker called "How to Root an Android Phone with SuperOneClick" (I cannot link to it in my first post) That video is pretty much what I did.

Use my info at your own risk, be sure you understand what you are doing.

As for recovery and flashing ROM's I am not that comfortable yet. I did do a full backup with Titanium Backup and install Busybox so far. I am going to get a google play store card tomorrow to load some cash on my play store account and get SetCPU and some other stuff.
