Root thinking of rooting

Thanks for that GoCrew.
I've seen in the youtube vid it looks to be a task done in a short amount of time. My apprehension lies in the area of a failed attempt and making sure I have time to fix any problems as I cannot be with out my device.

Now, how are you comming along with your backup?
Fire away with links now that you have your first post under your belt. :)

Look in the All Things Root Guide sticky. The Guide section. Everything you need is in there.

GoCrew: What version of SuperOneClick did you use? SuperOneClick has never worked on the Optimus V, other than one version (1.6.3) that you had to select Shell Root and then push su and Busybox with a command prompt.

This would be very useful info, that could be put in the All Things Root Guide Sticky (if it really fully roots the LG Optimus V)

GoCrew: What version of SuperOneClick did you use?

I used SuperOneClick version 2.3.3 downloaded from cnet. I am new to this so I don't know how to test if the phone is fully rooted. I ran the program, my phone rebooted and Superuser was on there. I downloaded busybox, link2sd, titanium backup, and wireless tether. All of them gave Superuser prompts.

Is there a way to know that it is fully rooted?

What Android OS is your phone and what baseband is it? Important info for us.

If you where able to install Busybox, your rooted. Did you verify Busybox installation by going to the install location with a root file explorer and checking that the Busybox files where installed?
I think you can do it with the root checker that sammyz linked you to.

Another way to check if your rooted is to download a terminal emulator from the market. Type in:
su
Superuser will ask for permission, select ok.
If you get a # after the su, you are rooted.

Note: Hit the menu key and select toggle soft keys to get keyboard back.

The best free root file explorer is ES File Explorer.
You have to go into the settings to set it up (if you need to modify any sysytem file or folder you neet to mount the file system to read/write), but is the best next to Root Explorer. To allow you to navigate easier in the settings you can change the home directory to just: /
To do this you just need to delete everything in the box that shows /sdcard/, but the first /

I downloaded the app sammyz suggested and ran the su command in terminal, both gave affirmative results.

my phone is android 2.2.1 with a novatek screen (verified by following the sticky) with the zv4 baseband.

My previous post describes exactly what I did to root my phone. I have not installed a custom recovery or any ROMs. Just bone stock + root as of now. I mostly wanted to uninstall the bloatware.

If there is anything else you need to know I would be happy to further answer questions, the SuperOneClick method was very easy. I am also interested to hear if anyone successfully gains root using SuperOneClick in the same way I did.

It would appear you are rooted.

Before you go and start getting rid of the bloatware let me give you a few tips:

Before you delete any system app (the bloatware are also system apps) use Titanium Backup to freeze the app. If you experience no adverse affects after a reboot (run the Gallery as well), then you should be OK to delete it.

Before you delete anything it would be a good idea to install a custom recovery and make a backup of your stock ROM/system.

The custom recovery allows you to make a backup of your system/ROM (this is much like a restore point on a computer), this is stored in a folder called clockworkmod on the sd card.

If you accidentally mess something up you can always restore your backup. Just make sure you never use the factory reset option in the settings menu. You can only use this option in the recovery.

Something else that is really important is getting your AAA code, MIN, and ESN from your phone and writing it down in a safe place (in case you brick your phone).

All this info can be found in the sticky's.

OK
Well I've syncd my contacts with Gmail and backed up my data and apps from my phone.
Uninstalled all 3rd party apps, and have reset my phone to "as shipped state".

Sooooooo. (where is my nose plug) Here I go.

Now OK wait.

Whats the easiest way :( DOH!

COnnected or not connected to PC.

I had a Link to DL some APKs for gingerbreak But which one would be best suited for 2.2.1 with Novatek...

AndyOpie
couple of things you mentioned I want to made sure I do to have the benefit of things you mentioned
you can install this backup to get your system back to the ZV4 baseband but still have the ZV9 radio.

EDIT: Also you should take the time to get your AAA and ESN code off the phone and write it down. Look at the sticky ^

also I bought a 10 dollar Play card for titanium back up
anything else I hope to get free, but If I need to buy something let me know..

Sorry for the double mindedness. I just want to have it all rehearsed in my head.
No suprises.

So i'll wait here ... coffee in hand .. slurp slurp.

Well waiting here I watched the video on how to get my AAA.
Since I can not understand what programs the poster was using and how exactly how to use them I'm putting the kibosh on this operation.

I don't need a flashed phone with no recovery to muck up my day.

Now I get to put everything back on my phone / SD card like it was.
..well, almost like it was.

But I sincerly appreciate all those who have helped me understand the process , if even just a little bit more than I did.

Go back to the AAA code thread and look toward the bottom. I linked to clearer info on the Utilities for another member.

It's really not that hard. I can walk you through it.

OK Andy,

Will do, It's looks like I'll need some help with which DL's I'll need fromm the tools and utilities section of the Optimus V: All Things Root Guide (updated 06-14-2012) thread.

I'll be back

Use the dll mentioned in the video and the thread's I linked to in the AAA sticky thread. It won't work with the VM670.dll

How? It didn't work for me when I tried. So I had to use the one mentioned in asudullah's video.
Didn't work for the last member I just helped either.

So how did you get it to work?
