Root This is not a good bye, but.........

DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!
ok guys,
i'm sad to say this but looks like i will be moving on to a new phone this weekend. gonna take my upgrade and go with the evo 3D. my usb port on my phone is separating and i have difficulty getting it to charge and also connecting to my computer. it is very frustrating now. i tried to hold out as long as i can, but this issue seems to be getting worse and worse each time i try to charge it. sprint wants me to go through assurion but i do not want to pay an extra $100 just to get it fixed. i'd rather spend it on my upgrade.

i do plan on keeping my evo and even flashing some roms as they come out. i just saw on xda that there is an ICS thread going. hopefully the ics will get ported soon to both devices. and i still plan to try mik3d and all of the new sense 3.5 roms that will be coming out of beta soon. even though the evo is EOL, the devs are still producing some amazing things for the evo.

also this does not mean a good bye either. i still plan on participating here and also in the evo 3d forum as well. plus there are now many great members here who participate. it seems more so now then it has been for awhile now. so many thanx goes out to all of y'all.

Sorry to see you moving on. You have help me a ton and thanks to you, I have learned so much about rooting, roms, recovery and the OS in general. But I am sure you will be happy with the Evo 3D, its one nice phone. I am up for a upgrade as well, but am holding out as long as possible.

You will be missed around these parts (though we will still see you from time to time it seems). Hope the 3d treats you well, and here's to the final huraah of your evo.

Oh, is that why I saw you lurking over on the Evo 3D forums? :)

btw, I still have my Evo 4G, and last couple of days when i had no power due to a freak snowstorm, I actually used the old Evo quite a bit. Wanting to conserve battery on the main phone for emergencies, I used the old Evo's LEDs for flashlight, and I entertained myself by loading some ebooks on it and reading.

And during regular times when I have power, I use the Evo 4G as a dev phone for some apps I'm writing. It'll be a while before I get rid of the OG Evo...

^ I've used my evo during power outages too :) If and when I upgrade, the plan is to use this phone for quite a bit still. Easy access to the Internet, music... I'm actually quite surprised by the functionality that they will have.

And I'm sure ocn will come up with some pretty good uses for his evo too.

ocnbrze, I am both happy and sad to hear about this. Happy that you're moving to a more recent phone and sad that you're not going to be quite as active on the Evo 4G as you have been. I'll step into the Evo 4G ROMs and Kernels thread and try to keep it up-to-date, although nobody could ever take your place :)

I wish you the best of luck my friend. Long Live Android!

I looked at upgrading to the Galaxy S II Epic 4g last night, and while I loved the thing, Bestbuys future proof wasnt what I thought it was haha. Still would have had to pay $499 for it.

Even though sprint lists it at $499, bestbuy is still charging $799 for it!

yes i was just curious lol. and saw a few threads that needed fixing. gonna do some reading over there and check things out. and i do plan on keeping it and maybe use it as my kindle or a flash light. i like that idea. lol. who knows i might get brave enough and take it apart and see if i can superglue the port together. (yeah right!!)

thanx,
i'm not leaving really. i will try and pop in once a day or so. and i will still flash roms as they come out. i am a flashaholic after all as we all know.:D

i looked at that phone as well, but i really like the evo3d. the galaxy phone is just huge which i do not mind but i likethe feel of the evo3d. plus i like how the devs have a more of a backing for the evo3d. all my favorite devs are making roms for the phone and that is a big deal for me. i really want the galaxy nexus, but who knows when it will come to sprint and who knows when root will be available for that phone. unfortunately my port can't wait that long.

It should be a very good phone. I hope it treats you well. Everyone I know with HTC is very happy.

And freak snowstorm? I've been without power since sunday morning and it looks to be restored on Sunday at 11:00 PM.
I hope they are wrong. Plenty to keep me busy on the EVO.

ocn, you've been a tremendous asset to this forum... i have always thought, "when in doubt, ask ocn..." enjoy your new gadget... i haven't had my evo a year yet so i'll be staying true to my first "smartphone" for some time to come...

I thought I read that Sprint is no longer putting the Evo on the EOL. They are supposed to keep selling it trough next year. A Sprint rep also confirmed this for me.

well before i was able to just take my phone in and i would get a replacement (refurb). but now they want me to go through assurion which i do not want to do as i will then have to pay for my deduction ($100). so i might as well get my upgrade. believe me i want to hold out for as long as i can. but this port issue is driving me nuts.

and i have not read anything saying that the evo is not on the eol list.

gonna go to bestbuy and see what my options are on a new phone this weekend.

Try radioshack, their prices are always half of what best buy charges!

I used an ad for radioshack online to get bestbuy to price match to get my EVO. I would have had to wait for radioshack to ship the thing to me, this way I had instant gratification. :D

Ocn my friend, I'm really sad to see you move on. It's bound to happen to us all eventually, doesn't make it any easier. :(

You've definitely taught me more than a thing or two, thanks for your dedication and selfless contribution of time to the community!

On the bright side you'll have a dual core gadget to play with. :D
Enjoy my friend, and please don't forget about us. :)

I'm gonna check into that, because with the buyback problem I would've sold them my phone to get the phone at sprints price.... So basically I could donate my phone to them or keep my phone and buy from Sprint all for the same price. I got into it today with one of their chat support people once I found out how dumb of a program I signed up for... but oh well.

BestBuy said:
Customer: And bestbuy lists the retail of the Salaxy S II at $699.99 correct?
Lisa: Correct so that $299.99 will come off of the $699.99 price.
Customer: Why is BestBuy's retail price so much higher than Sprint's? It is listed at $499.99 on sprint.com
Lisa: Because Sprint gets a discount for being the carrier and since we are a 3rd party store we have to pay a whole lot more for the phone than they do.
Customer: Well the future proof is pretty useless then if you just get the phone for what they are offering it for...
Lisa: It really depends on the situation if you are a person that frequently buys new phones then the Buy Back plan works better for you.
Customer: How so? I could buy the new phone from sprint for that price without selling my old one?
Lisa: Some people think it is very useful do have anymore questions?

Ocn I know this has not been an easy decision for you. I recall a while back you had mentioned that the charging port was tearing up on you. You have been such a contributor to this Forum. You are the Corner Stone that has kept this together. Your belief in Community has strengthen us all. We look forward to your visits over here but are also rejoicing in the fact that you will now help others. God Speed My Friend.

Good luck with the 3d wont be long and ill be riding on your coat tails again. I will def be over in the 3d threads to see what there is for the 3d. I always take your way of doing things first and its always worked the 1st time. The folks with the 3d phones are in for a treat with your expert ways. Thanks for all the help you have given and the paitence you have shown with all the noobies.

Radioshacks prices are usually cheaper than sprints prices. I for my evolution for a penny at radioshack while sprint was selling it for $99

Such sad news!! I don't mean for us...I mean for you!! With moving over to a new phone and new forum...how the hell will you POSSIBLY survive without me pestering you with questions, following up to follow ups with follow ups to questions....and, of course, answering my own questions!!:D:D;);)

Good luck to you!! Not sure when but I'm sorta right behind you...my port has been DEAD for months...haven't connected to my computer in I-don't-know-how-long...I swap batteries out once a day and charge with a wall charger. Even with that, I'm kinda "OK" with my EVO, the MikG ROM and where I'm at for now. Will see what phone options pop up in the next few months.

....and something tells me, you'll still be kind to me and the others in fielding some question once in a while! :D

See ya on the other side!! (and this side too!)...
