Root To Root or Not To Root...?

What would I gain by rooting my Prevail? Use the one-click root or shabbymod? I'm NOT that savy when it comes to technology, I couldn't tell you what a kernel is besides it has something to do with the internals of my phone...lol. I guess I'm nervous about having to find/moves files...I've read some of the "horror stories" about phones getting bricked or someting going wrong with the root, but am still curious as to what it would do for me/my phone. Put any answers in layman's terms, please...thanks! :D

you would have to have root before you run the shabbymods so the root comes first. then you could pick from the different mods shabby has. basically root puts you incontrol of your device. you are able to view system files and gain the ability to go into and modify them without root you cannot touch them. also you can go outside the app market an downlod apps not normaly allowed by your carrier. an as for the kernal they are working on a way to mod it now but havnt released the results yet.. hope this helps...

So would rooting benefit the average phone user that uses the phone to just make/get calls, check their emails, weather, texts, normal everyday activities? Or is it more pointed towards the more tech-savy people?

well the normal average day user prolly not. because it is really geared more so the developers can access the internals to manufacture software that is compatable. it is also used to upgrade and modify the looks and features of your phone. it can make your experiences with the device better or worse depends on what you make of it..

the main reason most people root their phones is for the free wifi tethering... after that its is mostly to be a geek and mess with stuff :D

Ahhhh, okay, I see now. I kind of thought it was more for the "geeky" crowd...lol. I guess I'll be happy to just change home screens with different wallpaper to change the look of my phone. I am aware that there ARE files on the phone, but not being technology-oriented enough, I think I'm safer to just leave well enough alone...maybe one of these days I'll give it a try, but no promises...lol. Thanks for all your help! :)

P.S. Don't we get free wifi on Boost?

nope but rooting is a simple enough process... hit enter a few times and you are done...

while your enjoying your new prevail take the time to read into the proccess of how to root and what it acomplishes not to mention the pros an cons so when the day comes that you want to root you understand it fully.. nothing wrong with rooting...

Another reason to root the phone, for the tech savy and the limited user, You can make your phone faster, no lag and no freezing.

Really, it is just a lot of fun. I do not know from past experience, but I suspect that this forum for the Prevail is one of the most exciting ones going right now. I am right? I think this is because it is a very new phone and we are lucky to have some brilliant energetic folks, who not only have the ability to do this stuff but they also have big hearts and are willing to help out the poor unfortunate unwashed masses who need it.

Root, Baby, Root!

The batch file in the 1-click root download is called " PrevailToExistence " Hmm . It's your phone , should you not have full access to it and be able to remove unwanted bloatware ? Should you be able to modify it and make it look the way you want it 2 ? Should you be able to shut the backdoor so Boost doesn't have access to your phone ? Of course you should . Root your phone and start enjoying the freedom to do with it as you will . I'm so glad I decided to do it and I am very grateful for all of the hard work these fellas have put in to helping us unlock our phones potential . Thanks fellas and welcome to the Forum zbban1 ! :D

I work 3rd shift and I guess everyone was replying while I was napping...lol. You all make some pretty good points for rooting and I have a better understanding as to why someone would want to do it and what the benefits are. I do believe I WILL root it, just want to read up more about it and then I'll take the plunge - you guys/gals will be here to help me, right? I had a Droid X and was contemplating rooting it, but that was going to be a lot more involved than this seems like it's going to be. One more reason I'm more willing to try it with the Prevail...

What would be my first step? One click root? I'm still in the process of reading that thread and may give this a try when I get back from work later this morning. I'm still kind of nervous about it, but seems like there will be help out there in case I have questions...:) Thanks for the welcome wetbiker!

Yes we are here for questions, seems to have a very decent bunch on here.
Just remember one thing instant answers are difficult, give it a day or more in some cases if you dont get answers.
First step make sure you download the one step root and have the samsung drivers installed on your computer.
Also have you updated your phone with the new update? If so it might be easier to root it if you reboot your phone and start the root process when the samsung logo come up on the phone screen.

I would also read through the threads below and download the Odin zip just in case . If you READ and watch the video FIRST . You should have no problem with rooting your phone . I too would do as Optimus said and Click on the "PrevailToExistence" Batch file when the Samsung logo appears after rebooting your phone because it was how I had to do it . This will save you some time in case the first method doesn't work . This is really a great Forum and there are a lot of people in here willing to give their time to help you . Make sure that you remove your SDcard before rooting too ! :D

sorry shabby i just caught up on my reading. didnt mean to give out the wrong info..was just trying to help..

Welllllll, I did it...lol! Took me only one attempt and it's rooted! :D The only glitch I had was when watching the video and he said to type in "adb reboot" on the prompt screen it gave me an error so I just rebooted the phone manually. Other than that no problems. I guess I was nervous for nothing, BUT I've read some of the problems people were having and that's what made me think twice about it. I'm glad I did it (more happy that it actually worked...lol), now I'm going to read up and hopefully do the shabbymod and see what that does...

I want to thank all of you that gave me the encouragement to attempt this and to those of you that made this possible for us all to do. I'm trying to see what's going to be different about the phone after rooting it - what can anyone tell me that'll be different that I'll easily notice? How can I "make it look the way I want it to"?

Ok for visual themes check these out
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/375336-theme-royal-android-v2.html

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/376237-theme-bloodgreen.html

Those are ways to make it look like you want. I am using the boot animiation from the blood and green, I like it. And I went with the royal v2 theme, I normally dont do themes much but I thought I would check them out and I like the royal.
As to things you wont see but will notice well if you put on shabby mod (safer then just removing things willy nilly) you will find you have more memory on the phone which means more downloadable apps and faster phone.

WOOOO HOOOO !! Awesome man !!!! I too have tried Themes -BloodGreen and Royal Android V2 . I stuck w/ Green w/ a few personal touches added . When flashing Shabbymod .09 , you should not need to do the reboot , it should do it by itself . TAKE THE SD CARD OUT FIRST !! :D As for what all you can do with your phone now , READ ...... luckily , many have come before you .

Actually "woooo hoooo" was what I said when I checked and made sure it was really rooted...LOL. :D Oh, and I'm a female, but the "man" thing didn't bother me, no one would know I wasn't a male if I didn't say anything...lol.

I've been reading up on some of the things I can do with the phone now and think I'll hold off for a couple of days on doing the Shabbymod .09 till I get refamiliar with my "new" phone....or not, depends on how bored I get. ;)

OOOOPS , sorry about that ! :o :p :D . Don't get 2 familiar with it , the Shabbymod .09 & the Shabby Media pckg (if you choose to install it) . are gonna change it up . ( For the better) .

Not a problem...lol. ;) Are there any screenshots of what the shabbymod does, appearance wise, besides the ones on the first page (home screen)?Neither one of the themes really does it for me, maybe that's why I do a lot of searching for good, clear wallpaper pics for the home screen.
