Root To Root or Not To Root...?

Actually "woooo hoooo" was what I said when I checked and made sure it was really rooted...LOL. :D Oh, and I'm a female, but the "man" thing didn't bother me, no one would know I wasn't a male if I didn't say anything...lol.

I've been reading up on some of the things I can do with the phone now and think I'll hold off for a couple of days on doing the Shabbymod .09 till I get refamiliar with my "new" phone....or not, depends on how bored I get. ;)
If you feel like getting very familiar with your phone get a file explorer, I use Root Explorer but there are some great free ones out there, and just look through (with out changing any) all the files and folders, start with the /data look through the folders in there look at the apps you have installed and running. then end up in the /system folder there are so many things in those folders you will not know what most of them are for but as you read on here you will eventually get references we have and will make to files located in each of those folders.
For example if your tired of hearing the boost sound tones when the phone turns on that is a file called PowerOn_standard.snd and it is located in the /etc folder if you rename it (such as PowerOn_standard.snd.bak your phone will boot up with no sounds.
Or perhaps you want to get rid of the preloaded telnav app you would find it in the /system/app folder and you would just long press and delete it. besure to toggle R/O to R/W (read only to read and write)

Oh and also you can go with one of the other shabby mod, such as .6 or even .8 they will look visually just like stock but they have some tweaks that help the phone run smoother.
I used them but with my own little customizations for things i like, such as the launcher I am very happy with a plain vannila android launcher. though mine is made to work from the new android 2.3 gives a little better functionality I have other customizations as well but you get the idea.

YES and YES. This is something I'm going to have to look in to. I'm still going through the shabbymod thread (lots of pages...lol) and will more than likely do the mod soon, just like to do my research on things before jumping in all the way.

Curious...doesn't .09 include everything from all of the previous versions? Or do I have to add each one? Now I'm confused...lol.

.9 will include all the others, but it also has the themed look that was not in the others, if you are not interested in that theme you can go with one of the others and not have to have the theme.

But if I do go with one of the others, say .08, then I would be losing out on goodies that ARE included in .09? Hmmm....

Other then the themes I am unsure of what exactly the difference in .8 and .9 are?
I looked at the changelog he listed and was not sure there was much in the way of functional differences.
If you want .9 but dont want the themes you can do that as well, just takes a little customizing, which while not hard may be difficult for your first foray into this.

I see that .09 has the boot animation and some apps...hmmm...and yes, I don't want to get in over my head. How about this...if I get .09, is it possible that I can just use my own wallpaper pic for the home screen? I'm not so much bothered by the whole idea of a theme as I am by having the boost logo on the home screen...am I saying this right? lol

ya the wallpaper is still completely up to you, just set it like you do the stock screen wallpaper.
Also looking more into the changelog he supplys stock fonts and theme for those that prefer it. it is a separate download I believe it would be extremely easy to put those files in where the themed ones are and then flash it.

Yeah, I did see that about the stock fonts, too. Flashing...what is that exactly?

on this phone with this shabbymod it just means you click the file that your supposed to and watch the screen pop up and run the lines of code and press a button when it tells you to. :D

like when you ran the one click root.

:D I guess sometimes you can expect instant answers

today was your lucky day sitting here with not much going on so decided to pretty much park on this forum.:D

Ohhh, duh @ me...LOL I just knew it HAD to be something more complicated than that...well, I guess I'll have to give .09 a try. A little nervous about doing it, but I did the root okay and I've got my fingers crossed that this goes as smoothly...*taking deeeeep breath* :D I'm so thankful that you have the patience to answer my "99 questions" - I'm sure I'll have more, but am still in the process of reading the .09 thread and have found a few answers to questions I've had from that. What does the media pack do in the mod?

And do I EVER thank you for that!!!

I guess that's my cue to get busy and do the .09 mod NOW, while you're still here...lol. :D

I want to do this right...I click on the link (going for the loaded version) and download it to the PC, right? Unmount my SD card and remove it?

I forgot there's a video for it...sorry...watching that now....hmmmm. I downloaded the loaded .09, but it's not on my desktop...did it d/l correctly? I can't find it.

I've got it now...back to the video....

Sorry wandered off for a few ya I can stay and answer more questions not a problem right now.

yup remove sd card.
Usually your computer will download to your download folder. should be under users/yourname/downloads

What are the 3 letters I have to type in the search to bring up the prompt page? Having a brain fart right now...lol. Nvm, got it.....

I don't know...watching the video...and it shows that...hmmm...let me start over...grrrr.

Can you help give me step by step?

Okay, I got it, I think...was really quick...tell me how I would know if it "took"...it brought up the prompt page, asked me to do the debugging, which I did, and bam it was done...rebooted, but still has the same home screen as before...?

it is possible it worked, though from the sounds of it I would not think it did.

reboot your phone and see if you get a boot animation after the boost screen.

Okay, there's a blue screen with penguins on it...was having a scrolling blue bar at the bottom of the screen, is gone now...yes, it took...top bar looks different, etc. Pulled down the top bar and it shows the light blue shabbymod script writing and the android guy...

What I want to know is this...WHERE is the dancing bananas that other forums have cause I'm VERY happy that this ALSO went through right the first time...LOL. :)

good.
Now if you want to get rid of that boot animation you have couple options, remove it and have none, or replace it with another.

The penguins don't bother me, but what would my other choices be? I think I'm good with what I have for the time being, though.

oh and one other thing you should boot into recovery and do a data wipe.
You will lose all the apps and settings you have on the phone but it will help in the long run.
Your contacts should be synced with your gmail account so they will come back soon as you reset up your phone gmail account.
if you do not know how to go into recovery I can tell you how.
