Root Total newbie needing help with Optimus V (virgin mobile)

Hello you lovely, lovely people :) I have an Optimus V, on virgin mobile network. I bought the phone (already rooted) from a now non contactable source :( It has worked perfectly for the first 10 months. For the last month or two, it randomly freezes/ screen goes blank/ removes or unmounts the SD card/ restarts or won't turn on at all! This drives me NUTS! I know nothing about rooting, just was told that it would be better than shop bought but now I'm not so sure... I don't do a lot with it to be honest, use it for calls and txt. My biggest questions are, how do I know what it has been rooted to/with and if I were to (gasp) get one from the shop, would I be able to install quicksettings on it? I LOVE being able to tether my laptop and KindleFire :D Oh, and I suppose, another question would be, is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?! I love this phone, don't want to have to get a new one if possible.. I'm a quick study if anyone wants to teach :D

I place myself entirely in your capable hands chaps and I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong place, forgive a poor foreign girl eh?

I live in Upstate New York, USA

Hello there and welcome to the forums!! :D

I have moved you to the optimus V all things root forum where you will get help from other rooted users with the same device

I would first recommend a factory reset. Rooting allows some customization and yes, wireless tether. I'd run through all the root guides for the Optimus just in case you missed something. Problems may arise, but with the amount you're getting a full reset of the phone will probably be the best bet.

Are you sure this is a good idea (or did you mean factory reset from custom recovery)? I'm not that knowledgeable about this type of thing, but it looks to me like something was already done to the phone. Is the phone already custom rommed?

see, that's the problem, I don't KNOW what's on it! How do I find that out?! also, I have ZERO knowledge about rooting. Can't afford to 'brick' my phone (if that's the right term!)

Well there is a way to unbrick and that's the correct term, most bricks only happen because of doing noobish mistakes....anyways to find out if you have a stock rom or custom rom: do you have any virgin mobile apps? Do you have an app called backside updater? Do you have an app called rom manager?

Also what color is the notification bar on the top of the phone?

soooo, what do I do? and if I have to 'reset it' then how do I keep things I've downloaded? Not everything can be moved to my SD card.

Get titanium backup to backup all your apps, and just because an app is moved to SD card doesn't mean you can get it back later on another ROM.

Also you should get a custom recovery installed on it, make a nandroid backup, and install the BACKside ROM, I'm sure you'll like CM7 over stock :D

who knows?! Stupid phone. I shut it down and restarted it, now it's happily backing up :) I take it that it installed to my sd card by itself? or do I need to do that now?

so, now I need to copy everything to my pc just incase right? Then what do I do?

Just incase you accidentally format the entire SD card, yes.

what are all these things and HOW do I do them?! lol

Use this app to flash the recovery: [App] Flash Image GUI - Flash Kernels and Recoveries from normal Android mode! - xda-developers

Use one of these recoveries:
1)http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...cwm-green-w-backsideupdater-auto-install.html (This one is all green)
2)[ROM ] IHO OM-Mandylion [KERNEL] custom [RECOVERY] CWM-Blue (This one is all blue, make sure you download the recovery, not the kernel)

I will tell you how to install ROM later after you get the recvoery, please download the recovery with your computer, not your phone.

right. Just to be clear, do I have to download that app from my phone? Then the other one (does it matter which?) on my pc. correct?
