Root Uninstallable Preloaded Apps List

This may already be posted, but this is apparently the proper place:

I use Handcent for SMS/MMS. I found out the hard way not to remove the MMS.apk file, the stock text messaging program. You will not get any obvious problems and regular text messages will still work. But you will not get any Multimedia Pictures, Video, Music, etc. If you are signed up for Boost Media Mail, you will see them there only.

If you do delete it, put it back in the /system/apps directory using Root Explorer or something similar. Then reboot your Prevail. Any new MMS will then start going to both Boost Media Mail and your phone.

I hope this helps some other dummy like me.

Rid myself of the stock messenger and only use the handcent...used Ti backup.

Not signed up for boost media mail so I should be good :).

huh??? I also use Handsent and as you know the newest release frees us from the bonds of keeping the stock MMS installed. But, I did not know of any problem with the crappy media mail web site. I AM signed up for that but I have not noticed any problems. IS there supposed to be problems if you are signed up for Media Mail? If so, what are they? My understanding is that the message will be sent both to media mail and to the phone.

There are no problems, he was most likely commenting on your earlier post where you uninstalled the mms.apk and were no longer receiving Media mail on your handset, just the website.

Also, just a side note. If you had a CDMA phone through boost and were signed up for the media mail website before hand, the first time you recieve a media mail on the prevail it will automatically enroll you.

If not, you will not be able to view media mail on your phone until you activate your media mail profile on the website.(This could be outdated, but this is how it worked when I had a CDMA phone awhile back, switched to the Prevail from a IDEN i85, thus did not need to have a media mail account with the website.)

Anyhow, on another side note.

I was able to uninstall the Swype keyboard with no ill effect. I prefer the stock android keyboard over swype.

Thanks for that. Yep, I uninstalled swype also without any problems. it is apparently very popular and I never really gave it a try. I did not like the idea of dragging my finger around the screen, but I probably should have tried it for a while.

I have it backed up. Maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days.

When I uninstalled google search and did a factory reset, the market app didnt update and I got an error between loading the market app and the google sync setup process. I still was able to use the older market app and the phone. So it was a small side effect.

Do you guys think I could uninstall the default browser? I'm using opera mini and I like it so much better...

I uninstalled the stock browser last night. It seems to be OK as long as there is at least one browser installed. I have tried Opera Mini and am now using Dolphin mini. So far so good. Someone please alert me to any possible issues with doing this. I have the stock browser backed up with TB so I assume it would not be a problem to restore it.

The stock browser had intermittent force close problems for some reason anyway.

yes you can replace the stock browser, I have had mine replaced since the first shabby mod.

I deleted the stock messenger on my LG Optimus M. Now I realize I need it. Titanium won't reinstall it, just freezes. When I go into /system/apps, it shows com.android.mms.apk. I have tried to install from there, but it still won't let me! Sorry if this is stupid, I'm new at this. Someone please help! Can't receive any texts or send pics! :(

You could prolly get better help in the LG forums but I think you need the odex file too. Don't know much about this stuff either.

Hope you get it fixed though

If you can't get a copy of the stock MMS files (plus odex) from the LG forum guys there is another option.

Since I posted that Handcent has released a new version that does not require the stock MMS app to be loaded. It handles it's own messenging. Just download Handcent and read through the options, making sure that you turn that option on.

I have been using GO SMS recently and they will do the same thing, but they prefer that you keep the stock app. Try them both and see which one you like.

OMG!!! You are AWESOME!!! Handcent is working fine! I really like GoSMS but since I can't find stock .odex on LG forum (keeps saying no results?)... I will gladly work with handcent! Thank you soooo much! I thought I was going to have to do another master reset lol.

Glad it worked out for you. Been there, I know how it feels. Again, you may be able to use GO MMS. read through ALL the options. Handcent is fine, though.

if you want the stock mms I also have an optimus M I can pull the files you would need. to put them on your phone you would need to be rooted, use a file manager, I use Root Explorer browse to /system/app and paste in. Then reboot.

That'd be great, thanks! I am rooted and I have a prog called ES file manager. Let me know if you think I should use root explorer instead. /system/app has com.android.mms.apk, but no .odex file.

Es should have the ability to toggle r/o and r/w I think it will work. the one you have com.android.mms.apk is not the one you want. I will put the one you need in a zip just unzip and copy it too /system/app

I just use Titanium Backups integrate to ROM feature, it allows you to update whats on the phone make sure it works fine then add it to the ROM so it doesnt use extra space. (Don't know why it won't just do it on its own but whatever) Oh and Integrate to ROM is not in the free TB.
