Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

So I am having a small problem. I have completed everything up to rebooting the phone into recovery mode. when I do vol. up + power it just boots normally. When I do vol. down + power and then select recovery it just sits on the screen with the 3 little dudes. I let it sit there for about an hour and nothing. I have tried the steps over 3 times now with the same results. Can anyone help? Thanks

kiel,

Welcome to the Android Forums!

It sounds like you didn't quite get the custom recovery installed...

Its easy to miss a key step, like powering the phone off at the proper points.

So, let's review....you ran root_part1 and then powered your phone off and then back on, right? (the screens you saw matched those in the thread?)

Then, after running root_part1 and power cycling your phone, you will run root_part2 and then boot into your new custom recovery.

If you successfully did all of the steps leading up to this, you can enter recovery by powering your phone off again, then boot into custom recovery by pressing volume-DOWN and the end/power button at the same time.

Check out this post for optional ways to boot into custom recovery:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/177367-rooting-custom-rom-questions.html#post1592392

Step #3 will (I believe) work on all Eris phones (step #2 doesn't seem to work all phones; I think HBOOT version 1.47.0000 ones have trouble IIRC). edit: yep, eu1 covered this in here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/205697-notes-recovery-booting-1-5-vs-2-1-otas.html

Let us know...

Ok somehow i got to the recovery. Not too sure how or what i did different but im there. New problem everytime i got to flash the rom, i am using kaosfroyo v38, it says it cant open and then the file name and (bad).

So its Amon_RA recovery's flash option that's telling you its bad?

If so, it sounds like you might have an incomplete or corrupted download...

I've just downloaded the kaosfroyo-v38.zip file from the Multiupload link in the dev's ROM thread over at XDA and here's the file size and MD5 checksum that I get (sorry, this took longer to download than I expected--blame Multiupload for the delay :p):

File size: 75,271,487 (bytes)
MD5 checksum: 33a6cfb38740cd6f89fc91d21efd615d

You should double-check that you have the right file size and verify its MD5 checksum.

I just happen to know of an app that can help you...:D...download AFV (Android File Verifier)...its free in the Market.

Point it to your /sdcard/kaosfroyo-v38.zip file, long-press the filename and select "MD5 Checksum" and see if the file's size and MD5 checksum match the above. If not, then you've got a wonky download and you'll have to re-download it.

If you've transferred it from your PC, then make sure that you do a "safe eject" before disconnecting the USB cable or closing the "disk drive" mount.

You could download it directly to your phone, but you should probably check the size and MD5 checksum then too (its always a good idea to check these--assuming that the dev has published his file sizes and MD5 sums, which is not the case in this instance).

Let me know what you find...

BRC,

First off, welcome to the Android Forums.

Are you getting this error during the flashing process? (or can you tell us exactly when you are seeing this (i.e., a little more context about what you are doing and seeing when this is happening)).

Thanks.

BRC,

I just ran into a reference to "Kangerade" in the Droid X forums and realized that its probably not an Eris ROM you are trying to flash...

A quick search of XDA in the Eris development forum does not yield any results (I had no idea if this was a new ROM or not).

Your problems would clearly be explained by trying to flash a ROM built for another phone onto the Eris (again, -- not a good idea, by the way).

Please look here Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers for Eris-compatible ROMs.

Cheers!

THANKS!! your correct on the "kangerade"; must have taken a left turn following the path - it's working now

i have CELEBFroyo3.6.zip loaded; but new problem: some apps won't install from APK i have on my card. Including com.android.vending.apk (the android market app)!!

i'm looking for a good Froyo for the ERIS; i like this one except for the above problem

Glad to hear you're back on track :).

I'm not all that familiar with the ins and out of Froyo ROMs...doogald and others are much more knowledgable and versed in these than I am. Also, here's a poll-thread that lists a bunch of ROMs, including a bunch of Froyo ROMs: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/196440-what-your-home-base-rom.html

Cheers!

Did you flash the Google apps after you flashed CELB? If you read the instructions carefully you will see that you need to flash CELB and then, before you restart the phone, you need to flash the Google apps package.

I've tried Kaos, CELB, Nonsensikal, and FroShedYo, and my preference is CELB, Nonsensikal, FroShedYo and Kaos. Set up properly, you really can't go wrong with the first three. It's my opinion that Kaos is a bit sloppy about properly testing new versions before they are released, so I won't use his ROMs anymore. Your experience may be different, of course.

How do i download a ROM of my choice and put it on my SD card?

Download links for almost all ROMs can be found at threads on this site: Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers

You have a couple of choices:

1. Download directly to the Eris. I believe that this will place the file in a /downloads directory on the SD card; you can use a phone application like Astro File Manager to copy or move the file to the top directory of the SD card, where it will be visible to the Recovery process you use to flash a ROM.

2. Download to your PC. Connect your phone to the PC using a USB cable, choose the option which should pop up int he notification bar to mount the SD card as a disk drive to your PC, and copy file files on your PC to the removable drive which should have showed up on the computer. When you are done copying, dismount the removable drive from your computer (with Windows, safely remove hardware icon from the system tray, as you would with an removable drive like a USB thumb drive). When that is done, you can use the same process on the phone to stop disk drive mode and remount the SD card to the phone.

I almost always use something like the latter - it's more reliable and chews up less phone battery. In fact, the battery will charge as it is connected.

Zach,

First, welcome to the Android Forums.

I'm not an expert in Gscript by any stretch, but double-check that the steps from figure 1 through 17 are in-line with your actions. eu1 has this laid-out pretty well and its probably just a mis-placed click.

Let us know. Cheers!

chrskrull,

Doesn't sound like you used this thread's method, so I'm not sure that you'll get a lot of eyeballs looking at your issue in this particular thread.

You might want to start a new thread and include a few more, specific details about what is going on, what ROMs are involved, etc. Perhaps others that have seen something like this will be able to help you (I haven't seen or heard of anything like this...).

Cheers!

Thank You all involved ! I just used this and so far so good . the where a couple bumps along the way such as

: needed to use my pc to unzip gscript.zip the Estrongs file manager wasn't working for what ever reason .
: i had to use the Hboot then restore option AKA . use Vol-Down + End/Power to boot into HBOOT mode, and then press Vol-Up to start the Amon_RA Recovery

this was very helpful I'm now getting used to KaosFroyo V38 .

Thanks again

Just make sure you also flash CFS v6 if you are running Kaos v38. There is a link in the Kaos FAQ. Great ROM, I have been using Kaos since v25 and love it.

Will this work if my Eris has HBOOT 1.49 S-ON and also will I then be able to increase my processor speed and install 2.2

Bobcat,

Welcome to the Android Forums!

Yes, you can use this to root a 1.49.xxxx S-ON HBOOT Eris phone.

Yes, you can install an custom rooted ROM that has an overclocked kernel and that custom ROM can indeed be a 2.2 version of Android.

Cheers!

Scary Alien,

Thanks for the quick response. I am sorry to say that I am a layman. Do you have a suggestion and how do I install it.

No problem...happy to help.

You've actually picked the right thread since the author of this thread, erisuser1 is held in the highest esteem and has written a very thorough, detailed, and illustrative guide regarding the steps involved in rooting. Take some time and very carefully read through the first several instructional posts (you don't have to do them yet, just try to read and understand). You might also want to read through the subsequent posts too to get a feel for what other questions and issues people have had when rooting.

That being said, this thread was developed, principally to help those that wanted to root and weren't conversant in either installing or using the Android SDK and the adb utility. So, eu1 developed and documented this phone-only method. There is a simpler method for you to use (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html) however, its thread is nowhere near as detailed and instructive as this current thread is.

So, start with some reading and come back and let us know if you still have questions. There's lots of very helpful folks around here that will be happy to help you on your rooting journey.

Cheers!
