Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

My phone will not boot the Amon_Ra recovery. I have tried holding Vol up+End/Power and Vol down+End/power. I can get into the Hboot menu but that is as far as I can go. Has anyone else had this problem? Everything else has worked fine and I can still start my phone with the normal OS.

**wow, newb mistake, i didnt realize i had to select 'recovery' from the hboot menu...thanks all!**

pfigz1138 (wow, how do you pronouce that? ;)),

Welcome to Android Forums! Glad you figured it out yourself. Cheers!:)

Okay i downloaded everything that i needed, I am currently stuck in the file manager trying to access everything in the gscript.zip. i followed your instructions to the T (or at least i thought). Please help me your royal highness.

JimmyPop21,

Please review the thread again. eu1's instructions are very detailed and specific, so its likely you just missed a small step. Also, give us a little more information about exactly what you are seeing and what you mean.

We'll get you fixed-up...thanks and good luck!

Help please i did everything step by step everything worked fine its awesome, except now it wont send mms.please help someone.......

You will get better help for that if you post your question in a new thread, or review the forum thread for your specific rom on XDA. This thread is about a specific rooting method - not problems in ROMs you flash afterwards.

Some weeks ago mms problems were common in certain ROMs; but in almost every case there was a fix. If you post a question here on AF make sure to mention the specific rom you are using.

I rooted yesterday, using your method and guide.

Not only was it easy, but your instructions are impeccable!

Your post is the clearest and most complete of any I found on this and other forums.

I only went as far as flashing "engtools3" to gain su permission and be able to install Titanium and backup my apps before doing a wipe.

Some of the apps on my phone offer new features with root and I'm exploring those and will be flashing a new Rom in a few days.

Again, thank you! You are a great teacher.

my trackball is messed up and i am unable to scroll down. is there any other way for me to move down the menu without using the trackball?

i followed the root guide for dummies and got to the point of backup/restore of my phone. however my trackball is messed up and i am unable to scroll down in the menu. is there any other way to scroll down in the menu or any other way to backup/restore my phone from this point? please help! i would love to finish this process

So I'm no stranger to loading custom ROMS on my phone, but this is my first android phone. I aquired an Eris for free from work. I'm coming from the Samsung Omnia Windows Mobile world and I have a question. Some of the articles/forums I've been reading state that you can only root your phone if it's running android 1.5. Is that true or is that outdated info? Should the instructions in this thread work for me ?

Under software information my phone says:
Firmware version: 2.1
Baseband version: 2.42.01.04.27
Build number: 2.37.605.4 CL185970 release-keys

Can I root this phone?

Second question, if i can, can anyone suggest a stable minimal ROM for me to load. I'm a fan of only loading what I need on my phone.

Thanks.

~P

I tried to root my Eris with the rooting for dummies, and in fig. 40 I only have the gscript.zip ROM to choose from. Where can I find all the other ROMs? Please help...

Pdoe,

Welcome to Android Forums!

You can root using the method described in this thread...the new rooting methods work on any version of Android for the Eris. These are the "universal methods":

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html

and they all use the same root exploit--they just differ in how you actually do the root and the instructions and detailed provided. The thread you are in is one of the clearest and most detailed.

Also, xtrSense is a very good ROM to select if you want Sense--or xtrROM if you do not want the Sense UI.

Cheers!

uceagle21,

This is a bit of a sticky-wicket due to the trackball issues. If you are not able or willing to learn to use the Android SDK (and all of the baggage that comes with learning to set it up) and doing some rather tricky things while booted under recovery, then you might have to un-root and get a replacement phone from VZW.

If you are game, check out these threads for more information about busted trackballs (be forewarned that this is not for the faint-of-heart):

Good luck.

Bootlejr88,

Welcome to Android Forums!

You have to move the custom ROMs to the top-level of the /sdcard directory--did you perhaps leave them in your /sdcard/download folder (that's the default location for direct downloads)? If you download a ROM to your PC and transfer them over to your phone, but sure to do a "safe eject" before disconnecting your USB cable.

A good place to "shop" for ROMs is over on XDA (you'll need an account to download files from there). Here's a good starting thread to find ROMs:

[READ FIRST] Eris Roll-up Thread - xda-developers

Also, a very good ROM is xtrSense: [ROM][GPL][10/4/2010] xtrSENSE4.6 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit,flash10]-HTC Sense - xda-developers or his "no Sense" brother, xtrROM ([ROM][GPL][10/4/2010] xtrROM4.6 [cache2cache,apps2sd,jit,lwp,oc,flash10] - xda-developers).

Good luck!

Thanks, SA... Now, my other question is... What process do i use to switch ROMs? Do I need to delete others or what? Thanks to all for the hard work!!!

Bootlejr88~

No credit need be directed my way, lol--all the street-cred should go to the thread's OP/author, erisuser1 (he did all of the hard-work here).

Changing ROMs is pretty straight-forward:

1. Research and download your new ROM to the top-level directory of your /sdcard
2. Boot into custom recovery
3. Make a Nandroid backup of your current setup
4. Do your wipes (data/factory reset and optionally, Dalvik-cache if the dev indicates that its needed for that ROM)
5. Flash your new ROM
6. Reboot

You can delete or move the ROM's .zip file from the top-level of the /sdcard after you've flashed it (its only needed for flashing). You can always restore a previous setup from an earlier Nandroid backup if needed.

Also, you can rename the BDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm portion of your Nandroid backup directory (but not the HTxxxxxxx directory that these subdirectories live in) to be more descriptive. For example, "xtrSense-basecamp" or "plainjanet2-2010-08-13"--just be sure you don't use any spaces or ampersands in what you rename it to (otherwise you'll get errors when you try to Nandroid restore it).

Hope that helps. Cheers!

I wouldn't use slashes, parentheses, brackets or asterisks, either.

+1 -- or umlauts, either :D [pretty much stick to alpha/numeric, underscores, dashes, etc.]. The disconnect seems to happen when custom recovery invokes / passes the name of the file to the nandroid-mobile.sh script via a command-line argument. We know the space will "break" the filename via the argument-passing mechanism and the ampersand seemingly causes the script to be launched in the background (never to return its status). You can just imagine what the asterisk would do , etc.

P.S., I'm going to be adding a Nandroid backup directory verify function to my app and in addition to verifiying the MD5 checksums, I'll try to make some filename edits to point-out potential gotchas.

Cheers!

So I rooted my Eris 2.1 last night and loaded up a new Kaos Froyo ROM. After I went thru both roots and booted up into the "Android system recovery" I did the back up and then I did the "wipe" of data/factory reset. Then I went to load my new ROM but I screwed up putting the ROM onto my card, I unzipped it prior to putting it onto my card. So I was stuck, so I reset to phone and let it power up. It powered up and when it was doing that I had to go thru some first time power up options. Once I was able to mount the phone as a mass storage I put the new ROM.zip on the SD card. I restarted the phone into the Android system recovery and tried to restore the backup I created, this did not work. So I just loaded up the new ROM, it went fine and started up, I had the new 2.2 froyo on there but all of the contacts, apps, texts and email are gone. Any idea what I did wrong and if I recovery all of my data? Thanks.

Sorry if this is a total noob question. I did a lot of reading and research before attempting anything, I'm very comfortable building and maintaining all of my home PC's. I just did not see in any of the articles I read that loading a new ROM would clear all of my persona data, and if it did how to backup and import once I had my new ROM installed. I have been reading articles on this site, androidcentral and xda. thanks again.

If your contacts were all Google contacts, they should come right back at first sync. Gmail is the same; other mail accounts you'll obviously have to set up.

The first time that you go into the market after booting up a fresh ROM and entering your Google account credentials, you will find in the "Downloads" section links to all of your old apps, both free and paid, that you had with your Google account. If you then leave the market without installing all of them, the free ones may no longer appear - just the paid ones. Text messages are definitely cleared unless you were running an app like SMS Backup & Restore, Sprite Backup, SMS Backup+, etc., which can restore text messages. The call logs are the same, but, again, there are apps to backup and restore call logs as well.

Perhaps people should make it more clear that installing a new ROM clears all of the user data and apps from the phone, but I am pretty sure that it is mentioned in at least some of the threads you read. It's a shame if you lost data, though. I guess you know now for sure.

However, all perhaps is not lost, if you did a Nandroid backup before you wiped data. You can now run a Nandroid restore, restart the phone, and bring it back just as it was before. Then you can install apps like SMS Backup & Restore, Call Logs Backup and Restore, to back up those items (and then restore them on Kaos when you reinstall it). If you have phone contacts rather than Google contacts, there is an app called UiA Backup Contacts which can create a .CSV file on your SD card; copy that file to your PC, fire up Gmail, switch to contacts view and import the .CSV file so that all of you contacts will automatically sync with the phone.

I second that! doogald contributes to so many threads with great, relevant information that educates and enlightens not just the person he's replying to, but all who read it.

Many thanks from me too.
