Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

Thanks to GREAT AND CLEAN instructions, I have successfully rooted my phone. BUT, I am unable to receive any MMS messages...

Am I alone?

It depends on the ROM you are using. Some of the Froyo or Sprit-derived ROMs that were published more than one month ago had MMS problems that were resolvable in a variety of different ways. It is certainly not universal, and in fact somewhat rare for recently-published ROMs to have this problem.

In any event, this thread is about rooting using a specific method - not about ROM troubles that follow.

The best place for you to start looking is in the developer's ROM announcement thread over on XDA. If you can't find a solution there, post up a question here on AF in the Eris-all-things-root subforum. And make sure you provide details - things like which ROM, and which version of that ROM are critically important.

cheers

I was able to root my Eris, and install V32. All is great! It is faster. Re-installing Apps andthey came in great. Now just one more item. Is V32 suppose to allow me to initiate phone calls from my bluetooth without hands on the phone? This is not working. If I press the button on my Bluetooth I see the Voice Dialer start up, but I hear nothing in the earpiece and it fails. Is there a way to get this to work? Am I the only one with this problem?

People have reported this issue on the xda-developers forum thread for Kaos Froyo. I believe that they say that it worked fine in V30. You could do a wipe and flash V30 and see if that works. There is also (as of today) a V33, but Kaos doesn't mention anything about Bluetooth issues being fixed - though I suppose it is possible.

[ROM]KaosFroyo V33 [09/07] [FROYO] - xda-developers

Scroll down on the first post to find the older versions, if you want to try V30.

Thank you for the reply and advice. Is there a way to contact the XDA developer for Kaos and get their advice on this? I would like to know if they are aware that the bluetooth is not supported and to find out if they have fixed it, which version or when do they plan to do so? I am totally happy with V32, except I was hoping the Bluetooth would be supported.

I see now there is a V34. But again, they do not mention the bluetooth issue.

Kaos regularly answers questions in this thread on XDA, you could ask there. [ROM]KaosFroyo V34 [09/08] [FROYO] - xda-developers

If you read through that thread you will see that it has been reported many, many times; I am sure that he is aware of it. He has not answered this issue at all regarding any estimated time for fixing the issue.

He has a location for reporting bugs, and I believe that it is already reported.

Issues - punk-kaos/KaosFroyo - GitHub

But you can track it there. If you look to the left, there is a link for closed issues, so he does work on them.

Thank you for all the replies. I followed the advice and made some entries for the developer to review. Although as you said he apparently knows about it.

One person reports the Bluetooth works in V30. I was on 2.1 and now upgraded to V32. What will I lose if I go back to V30?

Not much; I believe that V31 and above were optimized a bit for more speed in the browser. They also have the DroidX multi-touch keyboard rather than the Android vanilla keyboard, which is a bit faster.

I am a total tech noob... read lots of posts on many pages ( holy crap 12 of them) and one question I can't seem to understand is in layman's terms... Is it reversible back to factory 2.1 ota? Thinking about off loading on Ebay to subsidize a new droid if this doesn't help with issues. Thanx in advance

Yes, you can revert to stock. There is a thread on the XDA forums called "Eris back to stock". I would link it, but it looks like they are having server issues, lol.

You should be able to Google "Eris back to stock" and find more info too.

IndyRoadie,

I work down in the Grove! Good to see a fellow Indy Android user! Cheers!

Oh Hi there. Ok well im looking into rooting my Eris, tired of it slowing down and stuff. Can I use this "1 click method" and then just use the new V35 Rom KaosFroyo. And thats all I will need?

MrGrimxx,

Welcome to Android Forums.

I see you've posted the same question in both this thread and in the 1-click thread. Quick answer to your question is "yes". Either method will root your phone in the same way. However, this thread has much better instructional value that you'd be well-advised in reading through and following regardless of which method you ultimately choose. In order words, you'll have many fewer follow-up questions, if you know what I mean. ;)

Cheers!

One of the solid contributors here on AF - doogald - has a useful rule he calls the "wait a day" rule - for a popular ROM series where these are plenty of early adopters, you can let them be the discoverers of new (or even old!) bugs.

The point of this, though, is that you need to go and read those threads to see if any problems have developed with the ROMs that you intend to use.

In the case of V35, there was a problem with gps and web browsing, and the developer released a quick patch called 35-1 yesterday morning.

You probably want to read all the post which have occurred since that time.

Dev ROMs are not like commercial software - the latest is not necessarily the greatest.

Thanks. I decided just to go with xtrSENSE. Went through without a hiccup. This isn't the first time messing around with flashing stuff, Ive done alot of PSP modding a few years back. This is just the first time with a phone.

Last night I flashed V35-1 and it went way better than I had expected. All my contacts all my calendar items and even my apps were all restored, except one. So I tried by bluetooth and got the same problem. So I installed the Sep09VoiceDialer and at first it wasn't working. So I read more of the other folks comments and found among them more details of how to install the voicedialer, like changing the permissions, I didn't know about doing that and rebooting. After doing those extra steps, YES!!! My bluetooth works perfectly!!! Awesome!!! Thank you to all!!

Hello all. I'm new onto the forums and bought my Eris right before VZW discontinued it. I have maxed out the internal memory a few times and from reading everything (here and the news) I will not be able to get Froyo. Main reason I would love 2.2 is so that I can install apps onto the SD card and utilize that space instead of the internal memory. I was first worried I wouldn't be able to reverse the root but after reading some posts, I will be able to. Now my question for everyone is what would be the best rom to flash to? I don't really care about anything else besides being able to install apps to the sd card. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have never "hacked" any device before and am a complete and utter noob when it comes to this. Apologies is this was already covered and I missed it. Thanks everyone!

If I were you, I'd try xtrSENSE or xtrROM first. They are 2.1 ROMs, but they use a feature called cache2cache which moves the rather large Dalvik cache out of the same storage area in internal memory where your apps are stored, leaving plenty of room for a lot of apps without having to do apps2sd.

If you are going to try a Froyo ROM, I'd suggest looking at Kaos Froyo or CELB Froyo, my two favorite Froyo ROMs. However, there is a lot more space for apps in Kaos Froyo, so that may be your best choice. Even with Froyo ROMs, I would stay away from apps2sd unless you really, really need it.

I have read that xtrSENSE has problems with rebooting. I have heard good things about Kaos, but obviously I dont want to royally mess up my phone so I'm just looking for the basic to install onto my SD card. Please advise.

I think that random reboots are a problem with 4.5, which uses a different kernel. From everything I have seen, 4.2 has not had that problem.

I've been running Kaos Froyo for the last four weeks almost exclusively, and I really like it. That said, there are a few minor issues. I have problems with the market - many apps that download but get stuck on the install, many apps are sitting there, with automatic update checked, but I never get the notification that there are apps with updates available. There are known issues with the camera and the gallery (the app to view images.) I'm fine with it, because I hate the Eris camera anyway, and the market stuff I just do manually, and re-do if they get stuck. Otherwise, it's rock-solid. You do have to watch after new updates come out, because occasionally items that were fixed in one release are broken in the next (i.e., GPS issues is V35, the camera issues come and go.) KF is definitely still being perfected.

For a first timer, I'd still suggest xtrSENSE first. It will feel like what you are used to with stock 2.1, with none of the problems. You can always try out KF as well, and even go back and forth.

Okay i downloaded everything that i needed, I am currently stuck in the file manager trying to access everything in the gscript.zip. i followed your instructions to the T (or at least i thought). Please help me your royal highness.

My phone will not boot the Amon_Ra recovery. I have tried holding Vol up+End/Power and Vol down+End/power. I can get into the Hboot menu but that is as far as I can go. Has anyone else had this problem? Everything else has worked fine and I can still start my phone with the normal OS.

**wow, newb mistake, i didnt realize i had to select 'recovery' from the hboot menu...thanks all!**
