Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

The reason this thread won't work out of the box is that erisuser1's Gscript scripts check that you are indeed using this method on an HTC Droid Eris phone (model "desirec") and the Kaos Froyo ROM does not support the getprop command/utility.

He said OneClick, not Dummies. AFAIK, jcase didn't use my scripts, did he?

[ Edit ] Sorry, I just looked back at the thread. I have no idea what funkymusic means by "same error".

Yeah, I'm stupid...:) No, jcase's app only cares about the phone being 2.1 and above...

I was reading thinking that he said this thread method wouldn't work... I was just editing my post when I saw your reply come in...

My advice was obviously silly given that...

You're not at fault - simply a case of newb vagueness. I can't tell what s/he tried by looking at his post ( "same error" - which same error?? )

By the way, my original reply that I was typing-up was to have him remove the "exit 1" from your Gscripts to try to use this method (which is what I thought he was doing).

Then, I was thinking about what that would get him and realized that flashing the engtools3.zip would re-install su and SuperUser...

Now, I'm just confused...and not sure what to have him try...

My two cents if I may. If you used the 1click method try useing the root for dummies method from Eu1 the original poster of this thread. I have seen where some folks have issues with the 1click. Dummies method is the one I used and it went flawlessly.:)

Edit: Maybe I chimed in too late.

Well, s/he says s/he has "kaosfroyo". (Hrm, any particular version, or all of them?? :D).

Then s/he must be rooted. Sounds like the problem is just the WiFi tether app and some fog in the cockpit. No way to know, though if s/he doesn't use clear language.

I think it was v39, but since I've only flashed KaosFroyo once (v34), but I have no idea why it might not work on v39...

funkymusic, if you are still there, you could try to:

1. Make a Nandroid backup of your current setup (be sure to have a good charge on your phone and plenty of space on the /sdcard)
2. Download, wipe, flash another ROM or version of KaosFroyo and re-test your wi-fi tethering
3. Restore your earlier Nandroid backup if needed / wanted / appropriate.

Just an idea...

Just to add to this, it's pretty well-known that the built-in Froyo Wireless tether does not work with any of the Eris Froyo ROMs. You need to run a third-party app for Wireless tether.

Thanks. I knew there was some reason that I was keeping that old .apk around. ;)

Seriously, though: I have used the same one ("wireless_tether_2_0-pre10.apk") for a long time on both 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs (Kaos, Tazz, CELB) with no problems.

I haven't bothered to check whether the 2.0 release from that project works, but I bet it will, as the one I have been using was a pre-release candidate for the 2_0 version. (Only does AdHoc though, iirc).

Hey guys srry. I am in the military and I don't have alot of time but I am running koasfroyo v37and I have tried yalls support and I am believing I am rooted but the wireless tether you provided seems to not work either. I appreciate everrhing y'all are doing and I appreciate the support giving.I just need a wifi tether that will work. Tjs stuff is new to me. The error message I was talking about was when I ran this method it said I was not a Droid eris so that what got me all mixed up.

OK, thanks for the clarification - now I understand what you meant a lot better.

So, scary alien's interpretation of what happened was correct - you got an error message about "not an Eris" because this rooting method is only intended to be used with "stock" HTC ROMs. As we have come to discover, you are already rooted and have a custom (rooted) ROM installed - KF v37.

As for the WiFi tether part, two things:

(1) I got the impression from your earlier post that what was happening was that when you were trying to start up the wireless tether app, you were seeing an error message from that app itself, claiming that it failed to acquire root - and this is what made you wonder if you had actually rooted. Is that correct? Also - since you apparently got a root prompt in the terminal window, by now you must have seen that Superuser pop-up window, and are familiar with the way it works, yes?

(2) Apparently you have tried installing a different version of WiFi tether, and you said "doesn't work". Unfortunately, "doesn't work" means little more than "failed for any reason out of a million" - did you get some sort of message about failing to get root permission, or did the app run, but the other piece of equipment fail to connect? Please be specific... and also note that the WiFi app I mentioned only supports Ad-hoc networking; some types of WiFi gear can not connect to Ad-hoc, but only WiFi routers in infrastructure mode.

Ok. Thanks for the reply. It had to be an issue with the computer. I tried another computer and it worked. So I guess in all honesty the wifi apps gave me the impression that I was not rooted ans I got confused. So I thank each and everyone of you intelligent. Guys.

If the other computer is a windows computer, there is a toggle somewhere in the wireless network configuration that disabled access to Ad-hoc wireless connections. Some third-party firewall/AntiVirus software will sometimes turn this off... Ad-hoc networks are presumed to be insecure (they usually are).

If you are going to run WiFi tethering for extended lengths of time, do everything you can to keep your Eris cool (take the back off and set the battery on something that can conduct heat away, or blow a fan at it), and use SetCPU with an overtemperature profile to prevent destruction of your phone. The Eris was not designed thermally to have the cell radio and the WiFi radio AND the application processor all running simultaneously - and that's exactly what WiFi tether does.

brand new to this.........................

trying to root, but when trying to extract (fig. 12/13). nothing happens and it says "bad zip file." is there a new link for the gscript.zip?

another question is what's a good ROM right now. i know you suggest plainjane, but i figure that was like 6 months ago. Thanks!

The other guys will chime in on the other problem but I personally like froshedyo v10. As far as the rooting goes you missed something. If you follow the steps EXACTLLY you shouldn't have any problems.

My first suspicion is that you downloaded the file incorrectly, or you corrupted the file when you transferred it from your PC to the phone.

Note that the OP (original post) gave a "MD5 signature" for the downloaded file:
- Download gscript.zip (MD5 92796a8c6e61e8f1ee36e315c0acae7d)
.
I should probably have also put a file length in there; the "gscript.zip" file is

3,915,189 bytes long.

Check your copy of the file (ON THE PHONE) - I am guessing it is shorter than this, possibly much shorter. If so, that indicates that the download got truncated somehow. You can use the Estrongs file manager to do this - long press on the "gscript.zip" file name, and select "properties".

If it is the wrong size, download it again. (There is also a free app in the marketplace by "scary alien" named "AFV Android File Verifier" - it will compute MD5 signatures for you if you want to check the file that way, and also display the file length.)

As for the ROM, try xtrSense 4.6.5 - that's a good starter ROM. Rock solid, everything "just works".

thanks for the help man! it seems when i downloaded it from my phone is was the shorter one. so i just used the download from my computer and threw it on my phone and it rooted sooo easy! it's awesome! thanks again and appreciate what you guys are doing! THANKS!

:( Can someone PLEASE help me? I followed the steps for the "Root for Dummies." Everything went through fine, until it was time to tap the "ROOT_PART2," it says permission denied! What am I doing wrong? Is there anyway I can just undo this ENTIRE process and get my phone back like normal?

-Thanks in advance!;)

No need to worry, you haven't actually done any "harm" or anything that needs undoing at the point that you are at.

You probably just did not turn your phone off and back on after running root_part1 in figure 29, is that right?

If you want to "undo", you can just stop at this point and resume using your phone as it was before. You will, of course have a few extra files downloaded and the Gscript Lite app installed, but you can safely uninstall the Gscript Lite app and remove the "gscript" files in your /sdcard directory if you would like.

If my guess is right about the missed power off/on cycle mentioned above and you wish to re-do the steps, just carefully re-read and follow eriseruser1's instructions. These are actually some of the best instructions (and information) about rooting the Eris that have been published--anywhere.

Good luck!

Scary alien, thanks sooooo much!!! I did do the phone reset, but the same thing kept happening. I tried deleting and re-adding the root 1 & 2 and i still got the same results. I guess i better leave it alone while i am ahead. Lol i'm too scared!

There's just something you missed. Dummies method is what I used and before I did it I read and reread before actually doing it. It went smooth as silk. It's important to follow the steps exactlly. Once you do it you'll ask your self why did you wait so long.:D

it says permission denied!

There is one, and only one reason why that would have happened - failure to read the explicit instructions.

You need to uncheck the "Needs SU?" checkbox for both scripts root_part1.sh and root_part2.sh.

The instructions are pretty clear on that point, (although it doesn't have pictures for "root_part2.sh" - it just says to repeat exactly the same steps).

Go in to Gscript Light, and look at the screen: my guess is that for the entry labeled "root_part2.sh", it says underneath "Root needed: true". It is supposed to say "false", not "true".

LONG PRESS on the entry "root_part2.sh" and select delete. Then add it back in exactly the way the instructions say to do so, run it, and look for the "congratulations" message.

Those scripts (root_part1.sh and root_part2.sh) do nothing dangerous that would harm your phone. Don't be scared.

like i said before, new to this and trying to figure things out, so here's a couple of dumb questions......................

- do the eris "froyo" ROMs actually run 2.2 or are they just a modified 2.1?

- just to make things clear, i can change ROMs by following the "Finishing up" steps. correct? (nandroid backup, wipe, then install. currently running xtr sense 4.6.5)

- showed a guy at work how easy this was, so he wondering if he could use this to root an EVO? or is there an easy way to do so?

thanks again for the help....
