Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

Wow! Okay then. Thanks for the tips.

I'll try that. I guess it won't hurt to do it even though I already restored the contacts and downloaded the missing apps. It'll be good practice :)

I guess when they say "There's an app for that" they really mean it LOL.

A lot of folks swear by Titanium Backup for migrating apps and their associated data when ROM-swapping is involved. I've never used it, so I can't provide you with too much advice.

I don't ever bother to backup SMS/MMS - just another form of digital baggage to carry around ... I'm glad to be rid of them when I ROM-hop.

As for contacts, I just make all of them Google contacts, rather than phone contacts; one less thing to worry about there.

I do use Bookmarks Sort & Backup for capturing/restoring bookmarks. There may be better apps for this, but whatever. From time to time I also export the HTC_ime_mod keyboard user dictionary, so I can restore that, too.

There is a thread here (somewhere in the Eris forums) about "backup strategy" or such where people have recommended apps that they used for saving & restoring different things. I'm feeling a bit lazy though - google is your friend.

Following the main Eris stickied thread:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/163062-htc-droid-eris-guide-updated-8-14am-central-u-s-time-27-oct-2010-a.html

several levels down reveals this thread:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/41385-how-backup-your-htc-eris.html

lol, I had forgotten how prodigous CaddyMan was back in the day! :D

The backup thread is about a year old, but there's probably good info and lessons in there. Probably some new stuff can be added by those more adept at Eris backups than me (especially our esteemed doogald :)).

Cheers!

There's lots of options... but I was thinking of a couple of more recent posts, which include options for online backups as well.

Over time, doogald has provided a lot of great advice, here's a couple threads which are a bit more recent:

I have used Titanium Backup to moves apps and data between ROMs, usually quite successfully, but I never move "system" apps. In Titanium, apps are color coded by whether they are user apps (white) or system apps (red or green). If you are upgrading the same ROM to a new version - GSB 2.1 to 2.2 - it's ok to restore the green ones, and probably ok to restore the red ones. However, when going to a different Android version - Froyo to Gingerbread - never restore either the green or red apps. It may work, but it also may not. Your call logs, SMS and MMS messages are all considered system apps in Titanium Backup, as are most apps that are built-in to the ROM.

MyBackup Pro is a good app, too, if you are rooted. I think that this one can be used to restore system info - text messages, bookmarks, contacts, etc. - between different versions, but I would Nandroid backup first, just in case.

There are specific apps that can be use to backup and restore call logs and text messages - SMS Backup & Restore and Call Logs Backup & Restore - both are fine. I actually use an app called SMS Backup+, which backs up SMS and MMS messages as they are received to a label in your Gmail account - which makes them very easy to search, even when you do not have your phone - and it can also back up calls logs as they are received (including optionally putting the call as an item in a Google calendar in your Google account.) This app can also restore these items from your Gmail account - very powerful.

If your contacts are Google contacts, they will probably be synced with your Google account and will likely repopulate your new ROM install, though your contacts can also be something called Phone Contacts, which are not synced with your Google account. There is an app called UiA - Backup Contacts, which can backup your phone contacts to a comma separated value (CSV) text file on your SD card, which can then be imported to your Google account or restored as phone contacts to a new ROM. Of course, as I mentioned, MyBackup Pro will backup contacts, too.

That's about all I know about backing up...

Hey guys, I'm looking to root my phone (first time rooter) and install GSB 2.2 with this method. I just want to make sure this method still works, since the post is fairly old at this point, and would like to ask if there is anything else I should do that's not mentioned in the tutorial.

Thanks

This is the real deal.:D The thread maybe old but if go the end of the posts you'll see there new. If you run into a snag there's always someone to help you.

Yes it still works - if you look back just a couple of posts you will see that someone used it just yesterday.

The first four posts in the thread provide a good start. Is it absolutely everything you would need to know? That's hard to say for sure.

It can be instructive to read the entire thread - there's a lot of chaff in there with the wheat, but you will certainly get an eyefull of the common reasons why people end up stumbling.

There is just one thing: unlike many other ROMs, GSB requires two flashes. You have to download two files - GSB and a Google apps zip file - and flash them using these steps:

- copy the two zip files, GSB and gapps, to the root directory of the SD card
- restart the phone in Recovery
- Nandroid backup what you have now, just in case
- wipe data factory/reset
- wipe Dalvik cache
- flash the GSB zip file
- flash the gapps zip file
- restart the phone

When you get to the fourth post in this thread, you'll see that these steps match what is suggested, with the exception of what I have put in bold.

Let me also tell you, in case you were not aware of this going in, that when you wipe data/factory reset it does just what it says - it wipes out all of your installed apps and data, including your call logs, contacts, calendars, gmail, email, text messages, browser bookmarks, etc. Gmail, calendar and contacts will resync with Google when you reinstall (except for phone contacts - those you should back up before you wipe data), but you'll have to go in and set up all of your apps again. GSB should automatically install all of the apps that you had installed from the market from before you rooted, but sometimes it misses this. This does make the phone feel sluggish after you set it up after the first boot, but that will go away when the sync is complete and your apps are reinstalled.

Sorry if you know this already, but I know I'd rather know too much than not enough.

afaik, this would only be the case if you had previously been using a Froyo or Gingerbread Android release with the "Save settings" feature enabled... unless this is a market feature that got released to Eclair as well.

Everything is pretty peachy in root world since I followed the instructions. Have tried several ROMs, currently GSBv2.2
Could someone tell me what I'm missing to be able to move some apps to my SD?

Settings->CyanogenMod settings->Application. Make sure that allow application moving is checked.

This is a good app to use to actually move apps: MoveToSD - Android app on AppBrain

Do not move a home app (LauncherPro, ADW, etc.) or an app that has a home screen widget to SD.

Ok, so I decided to take the plunge and finally root my little Eris.

I went through the fist steps flawlessly, up to the point after running GScript ("Congratulations! You have root!").

Now I am trying to boot into recovery by holding the vol up and power button, but nothing happens, it just boots up normally like before (skateboard screen, HTC Quietly brilliant, Verizon etc).

Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: Got it, had to do vol down first to get into H boot and then go to the recovery from there.

Then try pressing and holding volume down and then power button. Keep holding untilled u see the skateboarders. Then go from there to flash ur rom.

GSB successfully flashed, booted up fine, signed into my g-mail account, but it keeps aborting saying it can't establish a connection. I don't see any bars up top either, no 3G symbol.
It says to try again when on a mobile network or to sign into wi-fi (don't have one available at home).

Any ideas?
I skipped the google sign in and can make phone calls, but still no data connection :(

EDIT: Data connection came on by itself after a few minutes which seemed like an eternity.
So far everything looks great, downloading my apps :)

I've had similar issues. I don't know why but would like to know the answer too. Maybe doogald can help on that one.

Wicked new to this - I get to step 31.5-ish, go to restart my phone while holding volume up and power button and the three Android Skate Boarders comes up and nothing else, phone doesn't seem to progress into Amon_RA - Android System Recovery. Can anyone help out a bit? Thanks

Try holding volume down and the power button. This will put you in hboot mode and from there you can use the volume buttons to navigate to Recovery and select that option. That should boot you into Amon_Ra.

That worked a bit - still boots into the three droids and doesn't seem to move from there. How long should it take to get into the recovery mode?

In my experience it doesn't take longer than 10-15 seconds. Does your phone do anything besides show the three skateboarders when you try either the volume up method or the hboot method? Do you see a triangle with a phone in the middle?

Neither of them let me get past the three skateboards. It just sits there. It was sitting there for about 20 minutes or so and I gave up, pulled the battery and redid GScript steps again. Still nothing. There was no triangle with phone in the middle.

Repeat both part1 and part2, making sure that you reboot the phone normally in between part1 and part2.

The symptoms you describe sound like the flashing of the recovery image is occurring, (as evidenced by the "missing" stock recovery), but not completing correctly.

I suppose it is possible that somehow the recovery image stored in /sdcard/gscript/tools/ got corrupted; this can be checked using the free market application "AFV" (Android File Verifier). Use it to compute the MD5 signature of the recovery image file, and compare that with the value given in Amon_RA's announcement post .

I just finished using this guide, I followed all the steps and used xtrSense 4.6.5, I am using wifi now thanks to this thread and the formally useless Ipad I have (no wifi available and no usb to tether it) is up and running. After following all the steps, when I eventually rebooted I realized that I had no contacts left on my phone, they were supposed to be backed up on lookout but somehow only two of my contacts were available to restore. I just went back and restored my Eris and loaded my contacts to my sd card and then transfered my contacts from the Eris sd card to my computer. I then rooted again with no problem. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this very helpful guide!!!!!!

A note about saving your contacts to sd card, I did that in the begining as well and what happens is google is going to back them up too and then your contacts will double giving you double of everything. I had to manually delete 399+ duplicate contacts.;):)

Well, if that happens, settings->applications->manage applications, go to contacts storage, clear data, and wait for them to repopulate from Google again.
