Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

I have a rooted Eris with xtrSENSE. I keep getting the subject message popping-up, should I allow it to do the update or is that incompatible with the xtrSENSE ROM ?

Thank you so much! I had the hardest time finding a root method for my friend's HTC Eris since he missed the update and was stuck on 1.5. Many of the links out there today are expired and this guide was super easy to use!

Welcome to the AndroidForums, pwong26, and very glad this awesome thread helped you out.

Cheers! :)

Congrats and Welcome to Android Forums. If have any questions just ask. There's still a couple of us that float around in here.:)
So I have followed every step for this root and I still don't understand why it isn't working. I know that the thread is old, but I hope a few of you guys are still around, I really appreciate everyone who has posted here, thank you! My issue is tht when I reboot after running gscriptlites roots parts 1 and 2 I am unable to scroll to select back-up or flash a rom off of the sd card so I'm unable to actually root the phone... I'm mainly attempting to root this Eris so I can install an emulator for gba games, I have a thunderbolt running on cm and I just don't get why I can't scroll on the eris

So you are saying that you can start Amon_RA Recovery by starting the phone holding VolUp while starting the phone, but that the trackball is not scrolling the highlight in Amon_RA?

If that is the case, then you need Scary Alien's alternate recovery. See http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html

Since you have GScript Lite installed already, Scenario 3 is your best bet.

Good luck!

Some Eris handsets' tracball do not work at all, or strangely seem to not work only with the original Amon_RA recovery running.

You can follow doogald's advice above or you can simply get scary alien's tracball-optional recovery image and overwrite it to /sdcard/gscript/tools/recovery.img, and then re-run the rootimg part1 and part2 scripts. This does esentially the same thing as the original rooting method, but installs a tracball-optional variant of Amon_RA's recovery instead of the original Amon_RA recovery. (For all I know, that's the same instructions as "scenario three")

Good Luck

Thank you for the link to the other thread, and putting up the link for a working gscript.zip

alrighty, i did exactly as stated, yet changed the name of the recovery file i got from doogalds link to recovery.img, reran root 1 fine, but all that happened when i ran ran root 2 was that i got a blue screen with a bar on the bottom that says close. i hit this because it didn't look like any pictures of the processes posted. i then removed the new recovery option that i downloaded, reran root 2, and ended up having the same issue i began with where i am unable to scroll. i then started from the top with the optional tracball root that was from the link. i removed gscriptlite, deleted the zip file i downloaded and got rid of everything having to do with the first try. Then got gsript sa.sh root, attempted to run, and got the exact same blue screen with the bar that said close.... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks again for your time

Decided that I'd really start over. So I wiped the phone. Turns out I can't read. My apologies for the long post earlier, did exactly as Erisuser1 said, and now my Eris is running GSB 4.5 very happy, thank you all again! Couldn't have done it with out the help(:

Im a newb. I did everything you said and it works perfectly. However, I chose to use another rom, so I thought I had to repeat the rooting process. I had to download gscript and estrongs again on my phone because when I installed the new rom it didn't save the two, but when I tried to set up the gscript part1 and part2, it wouldn't let me. I figured, let me delete the gscript folder from the file manager and start fresh lol. I guess it doesn't matter because I already rooted it once before, but I want to ask you if my phone is still rooted and how can I fix this mistake?

You only have to root once. Just start recovery (hold down vol up while powering up) and install the new rom from sd card, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and restart the phone. Also, think about starting in recovery and doing a backup from the backup/restore menu once you get things set, just as a just in case - you can always restore from recovery later if you get in trouble.

Hi, I was wondering what size of micro sd card will I need to use to root my phone, I just ordered an Eris from Amazon but I want to order a micro sd card so I will have everything ready for when my phone arrives. Thank you

I still have an 8 GB card in mine; that should be fine. It does depend on how often you want to back up your ROMs. If you don't need to back up a lot, 4 gb would be fine, too.

Thank you so much, I will probably get a 4 Gb card to start out with then.Does it matter if its micro SD or micro SDHC?

A 4g is good enough and if you get to many backups just move some of them to a folder on your pc. I think it would be fine with either card.

I need help with the rooting of my friends phone. She went and followed the steps listed on the first page of this thread with her eris that I gave her last month last night early this morning. She got all the way through wiping the phone in figure 39 and when she tried to load the XtrSense 5.0 rom to her phone but it wasn't there because I am guessing that she either unzipped it or placed in the wrong fold on the sd card. She only saw the two zip files Gscript.zip and rootme.zip. She tried restoring her phone in the recovery mode and got an error. She can still make calls with it and send and receive texts but all of her data and apps are gone. Can anyone on here help us with it?
Thanks
Patrick

Yes, it does sound like one of two things: she unzipped xtrSENSE and copied the files, rather than copying the actual zip file itself, or she copied the xtrSENSE zip file to a folder on the SD card, rather into the top level of the card.

No matter. First, make sure that the battery is well-charged. Next, when you start Recovery (hold Vol-Up while powering up the phone until you see the green text on black background menu - then you can let go of VolUp) you can connect the phone to the computer and then go to the menu option USB-MS connect. This will mount the SD card as an external drive on the computer and you can copy the file onto the SD card. When the copy is done, disconnect the drive safely from the computer, then press the trackball on the phone to get back to the menu and continue with the step "Flash a zip file from SD card".

Where is gscript.zip? When I google the filename every site I find that has something called "ilivid player" rather than a zip file containing the two root partitions described in your guide.

I just bought an Eris from a store on eBay, and it still has FW version 1.5 on it! I cannot believe the difficulties I am having upgrading and/or rooting my phone! I find dozens of "how to" guides, all of them stating I need to download specific files that are no longer available. For crying out loud, I can still download an MS DOS 2.0 bootdisk! Is Android some government program so secret that all references to are systematically deleted from the entire Internet? This is ridiculous!

LOL :)..."the truth is out there" ;) [for you X-Files fans out there].

See this portion of the first post to find the gscript.zip file:

Prerequisites:

- Eris w/ any HTC/VZW release (including 1.5, all leaks V1-V3, & root-ROM)
- Install free Market app Gscript Lite (PinkVenture)
- Install free Market app EStrongs File Explorer
- Download gscript.zip (MD5 92796a8c6e61e8f1ee36e315c0acae7d)

edit: please also reference this post http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies-20.html#post3839877 for downloading the gscript.zip file; I've also updated the link (as of 8/27/2012) to have a new, alternate download link.

Since MegaUpload got shut down, doogald kindly re-posted a copy he had handy in the above mentioned alternate post and I've updated the first post to include a link to a copy I posted on my DropBox.

Cheers!

Thanks for that link, and thanks for not taking my rant personally. After two days for scouring the net, calling Verizon, and calling HTC, the closest I have come to getting my phone upgraded is having the HTC support guy say they'll do it if I sent it in ... with a check for $80! Yeah right! The reason I bought it was because it's cheap, not because I wanted to dump a bunch of $$ into it.

[ never mind the question below ; I read farther into the guide on your site and I see that there are ROMs to choose from ]
Now let me ask you this: as my phone is still v1.5, would it be better to root per the guide here, then pick some rom to flash, or would what these guys suggest be better as theirs is a 1.5 to rooted 2.1 method: [Walkthrough] From stock (1.5) to rooted 2.1 (update - new link) - xda-developers

No problem, beardad :).

Wow, I forgot about Ivan -- he actually created one of the first, very near stock custom ROMs that I ever flashed (Ivan's Eris Official 1.0).

That's a pretty old thread, but its methodology is still sound, but I'm not sure that the links are...

If I were you, I'd root using the method described in this thread since its very tried and true. Then, when you get to the point of wanting to actually flash a custom ROM (even if its a near-stock 2.1 ROM), you've got better options:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/506345-need-roms.html

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/559773-best-rom-7-year-old.html

It's been quite a while since I've done any real flashing on my Eris (still have it and booted it up just last night) since I'm acquired two phones since then (DX and GNex), so I'm not really current on the best ROMs out there, but the above threads mention CM7, GSB, and the xtr ROMs (xtrSENSE and xtrROM).

Also, if you have any trouble with this method (you shouldn't, since its very well documented and time-tested), have a peek at "Scenario 5" in this thread:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/214240-amon_ra-1-6-2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html

Cheers!
