Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

Sorry, I should have checked the link. I see that Scary Alien provided one.

What I would do:

- copy the ROM zip file to the phone's SD card
- restart in Recovery
- Backup/Restore, then do a Nand backup of what you have now. It's always useful to go back to a close-to-stock ROM
- Wipe menu, then Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe Dalvik cache
- Flash the GSB zip file
- restart the phone

This will give you a very stable gingerbread ROM on the Eris; it should connect to and update the Play Store to the latest version.

I'm trying to follow this (27 page) thread and am getting confused as to what is the best current method and rom for my Eris. I rooted it years ago when I first got it (used) and it's running xtrsense but I only have a vague memory of that process and I'm not very tech savvy. In fact, I don't really follow Doogald's instructions above as some of it is over my head ("...Backup/Restore, then do a Nand backup of what you have now...") so I really need a dummies step by step guide.

Is there such a guide buried in this thread or is the guide on this page what I'm looking for?:

I have an SD card in the phone and can pull it and access it with the pc via a card reader but I don't seem to get to it when I usb the phone to the pc for some reason. (not sure if I need to be able to do that)

My goal is the Eris with a stable rom and 2.3 or better capabilities/speed. I like the small size of the Eris and don't want to upgrade to a newer (bigger) phone.

So, the first four posts of the this thread is the definitive "dummies" guide for rooting the Eris. It really does a great job of explaining all of the basic root concepts that one would normally use in rooting and ROMing your phone.

Is your device no longer rooted or do you just need a refresher on how to flash a ROM?

Let us know--there's still a few of us around for our beloved little Eris :).

Hi John!

Not much chatter with the little guy anymore but I'll try to help you the best I can. My friend had developed probably the most stable rom for the little guy but there's not much development for it any more. I just took a peek over on XDA and it's pretty scarce. I still have two Eris's but haven't turned them on in quite a while. If your already rooted then you can go by my little guide to install a rom on it.

This the last of the updated version of his rom. It's what I have on my Eris's and if you still need some help let me know.Also I'll try to get a hold of the dev too. :)

Yes, I hadn't realized that this was the same thread I'd used to first root 2.5 years ago! When I started to read it and saw the dates I assumed the information was probably obsolete.

I'm still rooted and running xtrasense. So as per my question long ago... I guess I just need to start with step 4 and use the link that Bob Cat provided below? (I'll have to read thru the steps again to see if I can follow them)
I now have a lot of apps on the phone. Am I likely to run into conflicts with the new ROM?

Also, an oddity... I got the email about the replies to this thread and clicking on the link originally opened the thread on the last page (27) but I left that page (for a reason I can't remember anymore) and could not get back to it. Whenever I clicked on pg 27 or "last" I would always be taken to pg 22. I even tried going to Bob Cat's profile and clicking on his recent post to get to the last page but no go. I tried erasing recent history (is that the same as cache?) but that didn't help. I finally had to open it in IE....

Yep, post #4 ("Finishing Up") is the right starting point for you and/or the second link that Bob Cat listed at the end (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/521699-flashing-roms-without-pc.html).

Yeah, I believe you'll have to re-install all of your apps if you're making a change to a different ROM. I'm not a big Titanium Backup user (great app, I just really don't use it :)), but you should be able to backup your apps on your current ROM with it and re-install them after flashing your new ROM. Thanks. Reading thru the first threads, I realize I don't have the ES File Manager app on my phone. Is that only needed for the original root or will I need it for a new ROM too?

Just the original root...although it's a very handy app...I use it in-place of Astro File Manager (they bloated that app, unfortunately). ES File Manager is really nice and it also have a root browser mode that you can enable.

Well I tried to install Titanium and ES File Manager and google says they're installed but I'll be damned if I can find them on my phone. They don't show up under Manage Applications or any other applications list I'm aware of. They're not supposed to be something hidden in the background are they?

Did you push them from the web Play Store or directly on the phone? I know the web side of the Play Store will push and install to compatible devices (do you have more than one Android device?).

If you did them from your phone, you should see an "installation successful" notice in the notification dropdown.

They shouldn't be hidden if you just installed them...:confused: :dontknow:
 
I pushed them from the google play site. I only have one device. I got impatient and went ahead and started the roming process.... just finished the nandoid backup....
 
now another problem? I just got to the "choose update zip file" screen and there's only 3 zips showing...
celebFroyo4.3.zip
gscript.zip
xtrsense4.6.5zip

I had downloaded the new zip to my pc and then copied it to the sd card along side the other zips. Was that a mistake?

Did you do a "safe eject" on your PC before disconnecting the USB cable?

Also, make sure it's at the top-level of your SD card (i.e., not in any subfolders, etc.). You should be able to see all four of your .zip file (the three above and your other one) when you view things on your PC.
 
I can't get to the phone via the usb cable (I don't know why) so I unmounted the sd card and plugged it directly into my pc. Yes, I did eject it before removing it.

Now I may have created another problem.... thinking I needed to start the phone back up so as to get to see the sd card again, I backed out of the choose zip file screen and hit the reboot option and it's rebooted into some stock HTC version that I'm not even sure I've ever seen before. Still I was able to unmount the sd card again and plug it into the pc and I see the file I downloaded is named:
CCM7 Eris V24 RIP - MD5 ee29d2a4179e66206d0e777f1ac77d8e.zip.exe
Should I remove the .exe from the end and try again?
 
On that download site, you have to un-check the "use download manager" box before downloading...

I think you've downloaded the "CCM7 Eris V24 RIP - MD5 ee29d2a4179e66206d0e777f1ac77d8e.zip.exe" which will then download the actual .zip file.

If you un-check the box that I mentioned, you should get the proper, full "CCM7_Eris_V24_RIP - MD5 ee29d2a4179e66206d0e777f1ac77d8e.zip" file (82.6 MB (86,715,376 bytes)).

Ah, good!

Well, if you've already recently taken a Nandroid backup, you don't have to do that again (note: it's a good idea to save a copy of that over to your PC, too, in case you have SD card issues and need to restore a backup).

The other steps of wiping and flashing the new ROM don't take too much time. The boot-up time takes a while, though, on any clean/new flash since the Dalvik-cache needs to be rebuilt, etc.

By the way, it is best to view/read/peruse a ROM dev's development thread for that ROM for any specific installation instructions. I haven't flashed a ROM on my Eris for quite some time now (:p) and I'm not familiar with that particular ROM or what the thread link is.

Bob Cat, you still following along? Do you have the site link just in case there's anything that John might need to know?
 
whoa... I didn't realize this was going to be so different. I have to set the phone up all over again. Do you know what will happen when I use google play to download apps? Will GP know that I'm now running 2.3 or will it continue to tell me the apps I want are incompatible with my phone?
