Unlocked Bootloader - I think so!!

This, is fantastic news.

Assuming the Sensation is actually good, I think I may have found my new phone. I just hope the dev community (and you lot ;) ) move over too.

Now, I just need to think through how I'm going to cough up

I'm thinking of taking up a 2nd line and reducing my current one once the SIM free Sensation is out. Yes the SGS2 is probably faster in Quadrant but tbh I've never bothered keeping scores. I just love HTC phones

What do you mean taking up a second line, and reducing your current what?

I agree about quadrant scores. With dual core and some custom roms, the sensation will run just dandy!

I'm cleared by Vodafone to technically have 6 contracts, so I might reduce my existing contract and get a 2nd one to get the phone...either that or get an early upgrade and trade in my Desire

Lol why would you want 6 contracts? Why not sell the Desire, by a Sensation out right and then when upgrade time comes, sell whatever you upgrade to. (or just upgrade to a sensation at upgrade time? )

I just saw on their Facebook page where they are going to start leaving their bootloader unlocked. HTC "There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO

Awesome.:D

I just posted my thanks. I may or may not decide to root and install custom ROMs and themes but I like the choice to be mine and also appreciate a company that actually pays attention to what the public wants. Great move on their part that will no doubt boost sales for them.

My desire is worthless. Its hada few bashes so doesn't look particularly appealing. Mine will be going in the man-drawer come upgrade time.

Actually, I may use it as a test phone.

This is great news. However, I wonder if that means HTC will release an update for existing locked bootloaders? And if so, when?

I would expect it to be bundled in whatever the next OTA is. I doubt they would release it as a standalone OTA, but you never know.

So what exactly does the article say? They have reversed their decision?

Edit: And that is not a typo on my part. The official statement by him does read "overwhelmingly customer feedback". ;)

Edit: Beaten to it

Paul O'Brien is speaking to HTC today hopefully so might get more information about existing devices

This is going to sound silly, so don't shout, but with an unlocked bootloader does this mean we can do an 'oem unlock' command similar to the Nexus One and then just fastboot flash a new recovery - none of this unrEVOked malarky?

Just wondering that when/if a new OTA comes out we have to re-root or just unlock it and away we go

This is fabolous news! I was apprehensive about getting HTC phones in the future but this news means I might be tempted into purchasing Sensation soon! Yiiiipppppeeee!!

My Desire is also immaculate, has had a Martin Fields protector on since they were released and kept in the official HTC tab case (again since release). I'd maybe have to buy a new back cover as mine is a bit grubby but if it means I can make an extra

I'm honestly not sure. The nexus one bootloader is truly unlucked so you can use the command as per the android AOSP guides.

The Desire's bootloader is locked so this doesn't work. The sensation etc are locked and encrypted. As we know the desire still needs exploits to be used to unlock it so it really does depend what terminology HTC are using. Whether its actual terminology or whether their policy is to stop encrypting so we can do what we have on the desire, just using a universally understandable term of "unlocked"...

We;ll need to see it to be certain

Thats very true Dan. Perhaps I'll wait it out. I want to move to a phone with a massive rooting community so Sensation can wait!

If they do unencrypt it but leave it locked, we will just need to wait for unrevoked or someone to exploit it.
