Root unrevoke 3

I read, read and more read watch youtube vedio about rooting the EVO, so far i am still not confident in rooting. 1Question: Unrevoveked3 is the only rooting "program" & what is the different Urevoked 3 & Unrevoked forever? So far all the youtube I see used Unrevoked3 the web base installation without backup and get the superuser option.

1) Unrevoked-forever is a single flashable zip that does one thing. It gives you s-off. That's all it does. Once that has been flashed from recovery, you have full root. BUT, there are somethings that need to be done before you can flash it. That's where unrevoked3 comes in.

2) Unrevoked3 is a process that is initiated from your computer. It does a number of things, but the basics are:

a) Replace the stock recovery with a custom one (Clockwork recovery).
b) Using that custom recovery, flash unrevoked-forever to give s-off
c) Grant root level permissions in the current ROM (stock at the moment, of course)

Basically, unrevoked-forever is a part of unrevoked3. Once you've successfully rooted with unrevoked3, you can flash custom ROMs, or any other mod, using the custom recovery that you get as a result. Or you can keep the stock ROM as it will then have root permissions (and yes, it gives you the superuser app for this purpose).

So unrevoked3 is the only "progran" that can give you super access to the unit? (for wifi tethering etc.) once that is done you can used any rom or mod and that is like a UI like the stock sence. I am running froyo2.2 and version 3.70 can I root with unrevoked3?

1) There are a number of ways to get super user access. Z4root will give you soft root only, so that you can use things like wifi tether, but it's flaky at best. You have to reroot after each reboot, and it's been known to not work. Unrevoked is a much better options.

2) Once you root with a full root (s-off) method, such as unrevoked, you can flash any mod or ROM that you like. Certain things such as themes require deodexed ROMs, so don't flash those until you've flashed a custom ROM.

3) Unrevoked is compatible with all current hboot/sw versions, so you're good.

great!great! thanks a million unrevoked3 done sucessfully i see the super user icon i am going to downoad the wifi tethering app and see if i can get it to work

wifi tethering app is working good test with notebook thanks again you guys are ssssuper.. this Wifi tethering is like sprint hotspot 5 dvices can connect at same time, correct? I see gingerbread 3.1 out there, true? and what is the best UI sence that is easy to flash.

1) To be honest, I'm not sure how many hosts can connect at once. I know it's at least 3. If you'd like to use sprint hotspot, you can flash a ROM that has it unlocked. An example is myn's warm or mikfroyo. There are several of them.

2) Gingerbread is Android 2.3, and there are a few beta ROMs out there, yes.

3) You don't need to be rooted at all to change the launcher and whatnot. You can use Launcherpro or ADW, for example, to change the UI a lot. If you'd like to keep sense, but change the theme or the way the launcher looks, you can flash a custom ROM or theme. You must have a deodexed ROM to flash a theme, though. Almost all custom ROMs have this ability, though.

Here's a list of all custom ROMs:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

You can see in the fourth column what the ROM is based off. If you want keep sense, flash a ROM that is based on sense. You can tell which are sense based on whether or not the base is an official OTA number. 3.70.651.1, for example, is the latest OTA. Anything that says AOSP is built off Google source code, and does not include Sense at all. These types of ROMs do not yet have working 4g or HDMI. 4g will be working soon, though. It's in alpha, right now. Down at the bottom, you can see there are a few ROMs built off AOSP 2.3. Those are the gingerbread ROMs, and they will be buggy.

thanks a million...I will hold off on the cust roms untill I read more. I do love the sense interface so any rom will have to be sense base! I will be looking for a launcher and overclocking.

Yeah, you should definitely read up on it, first. The Rooting for Dummies guide is an excellent source for this kind of information. Read around on xda as well. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

I think i may like Mikfroyo 4.4 base on reading. How should I flash? download to the SD card and used rom manager to flash. what else do I need to flash Mikfroyo 4.4? anything i should know before doing that?

Mikfroyo is a great ROM. The best thing to do is grab the zip from here:

[ROM] - [01/15/2011] - MikFroYo v4.4 - ReEngineered Sense - Simply Faster. - xda-developers

1) Download it and put it on the root of your sdcard.
2) Reboot into recovery.
3) Make a nandroid backup.
4) Wipe cache, dalvik cache, and data. Dalvik cache will be under advanced.
5) Select the option to flash a ROM from the sdcard. Select the mikfroyo zip from the menu.
6) Once it is done flashing, reboot from recovery, and it will load your new ROM

You can find detailed instructions in the Rooting for Dummies sticky on how to flash ROMs. If you have any more questions about it, please ask. Note that if you want to backup your apps, first, use titanium backup.

Ok thanks ......:) I think that a bit too much for me tonight from #3 ...down i will have to try another day Nandriod backup is this a app? I know you keep refering me to Dummies sections but to be honnest I have being reading that for the last months. I am sorry but your help since the last few hours is better than my how many weeks of reading...........sorry !!!!! thanks

No problem :). If you're confused about something, it's always best to ask. A nandroid backup is done from recovery. I'm assuming you have clockwork since that's what you get with unrevoked. When you turn the phone off, then turn it back on while holding the volume down button, you get to hboot. From there, select the recovery option. That will take you to clockwork. That's where you do the rest of the steps. Specifically, for nandroid backups, just select the nandroid option once you get to recovery. That will make a complete image of your current ROM. Basically, if you flash a ROM, and want to go back, just restore your nandroid backup, and your phone will be back to exactly the way it was before.

Ok, I think this will have to wait untill a next time for the mikfroyo flash. Hope i can catch you then...........Thx see you then

I've gone over this thread and I am gonna flash the same rom. Thanks for all the easy to read and understand info. It really helps when you can understand the stuff. Lots of times I feel like I don't know what they mean even though I have been mucking with computers for around ten years now. I know it can be difficult to lay it out for a newbie.

It's always like this with new technology :). We all had to learn something new. The best thing to do is just ask questions when you're not sure of something. Trust me, you'll learn quickly. Just always be sure of what you're doing, and don't proceed until you're clear on everything. I'm always around if you have any more questions.

Before I flash the Mikfroyo 4.4 it says to update the radio??? How do I know if I need to do this and how do I do that? Sorry for the newbieness.

No problem. What is your current hboot version? Also, if you go to menu->settings->about phone->software information, what does it say for your current radio version?

Hboot is 2.10.0001
Radio listed under the Hboot menu is 2.15.00.11.19 (it was listed as baseband under the software menu in settings)
PRI is 1.90_003
Software version is 3.70.651.1 if you need it.

-edit-

I see it is the latest, so I should be good to go, right?

Just FYI, any time there is an OTA update, you should not attempt to accept the update while rooted. What you need to do is flash the new radios, nv, and pri that come with the update along with a ROM based on the new software version. Since you already have the latest OTA update, you only have to flash the ROM. The next time an OTA update is released, you'll have to flash the radios. That's why you don't need to do anything with the radios now. You only flash them once for a particular version.

as a precaution go to menu.settings.system updates.htc software update and uncheck "scheduled check"

Yes, that is a good idea, as well. A lot of people make the mistake of trying to accept an OTA while rooted. Avoid it by unchecking that option.
