Root Unrootable Optimus V?

xilencedg

Lurker
I've tried gingerbreak a good two dozen times, with a zv4. I tried gordita, ran in to permissions issues. Tried Super one click, no luck there the dozen or so times I tried. I'm still trying EManU3LXX's one click method.

So far, all I've managed to do is piss myself off. Could somebody please help me?

Edit: the gordita method via either the manual or one click returns this set of messages:

rm failed for /data/amit/ACCEL_CAL.ini, Permission denied
link failed Permission denied
link failed Permission denied

Welcome to Android Forums!
We are glad you have found us here.

I moved this thread into the "all things root" portion of the Optimus V forum, so that the rooting wizards here can help you.:)

Did you install drivers for the gordita root method???

as sammy stated make sure you install the latest usb drivers from lg's website. I forgot to install the drivers on the optimus slider I have, and it kept throwing errors, then I installed the usb drivers, and it fixed it and rooted successfully.

I did update directly from lg's website. That actually got ADB to work for me, but rooting still fails. Sorry I forgot to mention that on my first post.
Thanks for the incredibly fast replies!

Edit: Just tried the link that bedrockhorror provided, and it worked like a charm. Absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for finally solving this issue.

As if I haven't sounded like enough of a noob...
I can't get a recovery to work now. I'm rooted, I know this because I can use SU and give programs permissions. I've tried BobZHome's recovery, VM701, CWM IHO Green recovery... nothing works. Well, 701 worked but I couldn't get it to flash a rom.
I understand the risk I'm taking, I rooted and put a custom rom on my G1. The radio finally died in that phone, which is why I've got the Optimus V now.

TL;DR: Recoveries won't boot or roms wont flash with error 7.

sounds like you need to set the correct permissions for the recovery. Also I would recommend you use the Xionia recovery for the v. I have it on mine, and I've had no problems out of it. Here are the directions for putting the recovery on the ov

To manually flash your shiny new custom recovery, put the recovery.img, flash_image, the Xionia AnyKernel zip, the keyswap zip, and your chosen ROM all on the root (base directory) of your SD card. Open Terminal Emulator on the phone itself, if your rom is still working, and type the following code (if you're using adb, you can drop the first two lines and replace with "adb remount" (no quotes when you type it)):

su mount -o remount,rw /system /system
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
mount -o remount,ro /system /system
flash_image recovery /sdcard/NAME-OF-RECOVERY.img

*NAME-OF-RECOVERY.img should be replaced by the filename of whichever of the recoveries (not the .zip versions) you have chosen to use.

then when you get done with everything, and there is no errors after each line you type, then type

reboot recovery

here is the link for the recovery. I can't attach it to this post, so just download it from mediafire.

I tried the steps provided by bedrockhorror to the letter, but Xionia just does the same thing, sitting at the LG logo like it's frozen. Maybe I should just be satisfied with a rooted phone.

xilencedg.
Please explain the exact steps you took including what was zipped and what was unzipped. The shell commands are case sensitive so even the placement of the spaces is critical.
This works on all V's including yours. If not, there is a mistake being made or something got over looked.
BobZome's recovery or the Xionia recovery will work on all screen versions.
Please be as specific as you can be so we can see where the error is, or what step got overlooked. This will allow us to pinpoint the problem and get it corrected.
A backup made in the custom recovery is like a restore point on a PC. If your rooted and delete something important by mistake you will need to restore your backup.
No backup, no restore. Force closures or system crashes might be all you get.
A recovery is extremely important.

Are you trying to unroot or root? Your title is very misleading lol. But I think you are trying to root. You could use lgnqpst to go back to zv5 stock then try gingerbreak and it should work. Let me know if you wan't to try this and I can point you to a guide to go complete stock zv5.

I followed the two posts bedrockhorror made down to the letter, spaces and all, using terminal emulator on the phone. I downloaded the archives necessary to follow those instructions and dropped the requisite files on the sdcard root.
I did successfully root my OV, which is a zv4. I verified that multiple times, thinking I was trying a root method for 4/5 on a 9. I made a backup and restored after finding the error 7 when trying to flash either IHO CM7 or harmonia 2.
Is there anything I missed?

error 7 is a problem with the rom you trying to flash. You could try and different rom.

It could also be a problem with the recovery. The newer Green and Cannibal recovery's sometimes has problems with flashing some ROM's and kernels.
Note: The recovery and flash_image are the only ones that should be unzipped. The ROM, kernels, bootanimations, patches, themes, etc. all need to stay zipped.

Followed exactly. I didn't unzip anything that shouldn't be. Like I said before, I rooted and modded my G1 way back. I still remember a few of the basic rules. (Never dig straight down)

I did get it rooted. Mentioned that a few posts back. I just can't get a recovery to work, or if the recovery works, no rom does.

Don't worry about the title of the thread, it's just where the post is located. Much more info on how to accomplish your task. I had to edit it over the course of time to keep up with the changes in the phone. The Xionia any kernel is not necessary with all Froyo ROM's designated for the 2.2.2 as well as the new IHO Gingerbread ROM's, plus the ICS ROM's. These can be found in the All Things Root Guide sticky which I helped update
