Root Update to rooted evo 4g

widget

Newbie
Hi Ok Im new on the forum and I have an HTC evo 4g . ok this is what is done so far . I'm running Vaelpak RC2 3.2 on android 2.2 froyo i believe with netarchy 4.3.2 kernal , so yeah im rooted with s-off. i was wondering if I can or should update to android 2.3.5 gingerbread i think now since im rooted and all and also if that would mess up my rom etc etc. also i run amon-ra recovery. thanks in advance. any help is great. :)

Do not accept the ota!!!!! All you need to do is flash the latest4.67 ROM. I'm on my phone so I can't link, but there is a sticky at the top of this forum that has a ROM kernel download link.

edit:man my swyping skills sucks today. lol just changed it for the better.

well hey, welcome to the Forums!

You definitely don't want to accept the OTA. Might want to go into Settings/ system updates and uncheck the htc update thing

I don't know your background or experience but it sounds like you are good to go in which ever direction you want as far as flashing new roms.

Have you read this guide? http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

i would look up on the Life after root section, nandroids, flashing, stuff like that. Then there is the rom and kernel download page, http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

you can find the latest and greatest in there and flash it.

Welcome to the forums :)

You should be able to just flash a gingerbread rom since you already have s-off what ever you do, Do NOT ACCEPT AN OTA. Installing a New ROM like MikG 3.1 you can have a new phone basically. You will need to run either Lionfish or Anthrax, maybe someone still has Lithids kernels" Just make sure you wipe really well before flashing the new rom. Also Backup, and Nandroid

Rooting your phone will not break your ability to receive OTA updates. Rooting your phone is simply a means to give yourself deeper access to the Android OS. Essentially you move from User privileges to Administrator privileges on the phone. If you do receive and accept an OTA update you will most likely lose root and you'll have to root your phone again. That's much more a nuisance than a deterrent however.

I'll check it out Thanks to both of you . I Kinda figured the ota update would Mess it up or possibly brick it . Just wondered if i should change from the base 2.2froyo Os so to speak to a newer setup but still maintain my Vaelpak rom and Netarchy kernal . also i have a2sd by drktremor. I had 2.3.5 Gingerbread i think, before I decided to root and s-off. so i downgraded to 2.2 froyo to gain s-off since i could only get temp root with 2.3.5 . Gonna check out the links you posted now thanks again :D Edit thanks to the added people since i was typing while you posted lol :p

its all good as long as the info gets out.

@op ok so here is the link:
[ROM]STOCK 4.67.651.3 (new ota update)[ROM] - xda-developers

Ok i'll check it but my question is will i loose my vaelpak rom and kernal i flashed. I know i need to backup contacts and such. When i load the system screen it says android 2.2(froyo) by what i have read and vaelpak for build number. this link will just update the android version right? dont want to start from scratch and reflash everything again lol Thanks Btw for the link :D

yes you will. the rom you are on will always be what it is. you cannot not change the software version unless vealpak gets changed or you know how to change the framework of the rom. so if you like your rom now then you will not be able to update to the latest ota. i hope that makes sense.

thats the part i dont get . I did my psp NP think its 1.5cfw atm. when i started with my phone i had updated to 2.3.5 . then my bro tells me about rooting and i was like ok cool so i checked into it and got temp root, the only way to get s-off was to downgrade . I did , to 2.2 then did the vael rom. but on the place i got the tutorial someone said (a little to late lol) just go back to 2.3.2. . Im just confused now i still have the same android version from before i installed the Vael rom . I'll keep reading on it but for now i guess I'll stick to what i have till i can figure it all out . xbox breeze, ps2 breeze, psp cake, evo umm yeah more reading still lmao. Thanks to all of you:). any ideas or anything post it please I'll be around reading on here and the rest of the net.:D

think of roms as being software. and each ota's are just updates for that software.

like right now i'm on mikg3.1 which is a sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 rom. but it is updated to the latest ota 4.67. now if i want i can go back to foryo and flash a froyo rom like mikfroyo. and if i look my software version would froyo 2.2 and not 2.3.5 which is what mikg3.1 is.

which vaelpak are you on?

I'm on Vaelpak rc2 3.2. I get that it's basically software. now i understand that it changes android version and rom . thats where i was confused. also i was looking at the link:
[ROM]STOCK 4.67.651.3 (new ota update)[ROM] - xda-developers

Does this unroot my phone? because thats the update i downgraded from to get s-off since i could only get temp root from it. It looks like a "revised" version to be user friendly lol just want to make sure its safe to my phone thanks

No, it will not unroot your phone. You can flash whatever version of android you want and still maintain root.

If your looking into 4.67 ROM's I would use Tommy's Optimized base.
[ROM] 4.67 - Rooted - Optimized - Sharing means caring - xda-developers

Thanks. and I know never to take an ota update thanks to everyone for making sure to point that out. almost did it the other night and stopped. Im looking at both the 4.67 links you guys have posted and tryn to pro and con them. also looking at VPGB since its the newest Vaelpak. what kernals do you recomend for tommy's and the other one posted ? thanks guys. i know it gets old answering questions, One day I will be able to answer questions as I learn more and experiment, Thinkin about buying another evo 4g jus for flashing lol to figure best setups to make a list of diff combinations (roms, kernals, etc)

No it doesn't thats why we are here. This is a forum and forums were meant to answer your questions. So never feel like you are wearing out your welcome or asking to many questions or think a question is dumb and therefor don't ask it. We answer them period. We do not say search for it, or why did you not search for it. We give answers we don't add to your problem.

As Far as kernels go I would say at moment Anthrax seems to be the kernel of choice. More about it here:
[KERNEL] [SENSE] 01-01 - AnthraX - BEATS - USB HOST MODE - QUALCOMM 'B' VER - xda-developers

I was very fond of Lithid's Freedom Kernels however they have been taken over by Lionfish you can find out more about that here:
[Kernel][Sense][SWAP][2WCR][Freedom Base] Evo 4g Lionfish-ver 1.4 Kernel GB 2.6.35.10 - xda-developers

the original here:

yeah we are the best site on the net. we would never call anybody stupid here. you came to the right place. let us know what rom you decided on and how it is going for you.

Thanks guys ok so i decided to try VPGB . went with Tiamat_Evo-v3.3.7-sbc kernal as recommended . and wow super quick after the kernal addon . animated background (ics I think not sure) new keyboard layout (awesome) lots of diff features from Vpak Rc2 . all around sweet rom. its android version 2.3 GB . comes with overclock and Undervolt settings as well as other tweeks. If you wanna try it get it here VaelPak 4 - GB AOSP Preview v0.2.2-1 - Vaelek's Place . its def worth trying. I plan to try rom manager so i can test diff ones without constantly reflashing and all. just need a bigger sd card (mines 4gb) . Anything i can tell you i will . I have become a flashaholic lol :D
