Root [UPDATED 28/12 - NEW INSTALLER] CyanogenMod 7/Android 2.3.4 Is avaliable for GT540!

I have a question....

Does anyone know what the fastest and most efficient ROM available for a gt540 user is? I use my phone mainly for media, games and browsing quickly. I cant stand it when my music lags so which rom is the speediest? :D
I would like it to be quite bug free but im willing to try everything i have several back ups :)

Is the superfast froyo good? And what big differences are there between 2.1-2.2 and 2.2-2.3. Thanks

P.S. I currently am running Soft-ROM + Honeycomb theme (I probably preferred normal 1.8 than soft-ROM although i had an issue with my screen turning off and not coming on until i take out battery-I tried holding On button but nothing happened)

^^^^^^^^Soft-ROM Solved that issue^^^^^^^

Hey dudeman ya know you know everything about the gt540? Well I have a question....

Well I don't know EVERYTHING about the GT540... :p

If you wanna keep on 2.3, then Soft-MOD is the fastest, and most battery saving version in my opinion.

Personally, I haven't tried superfast froyo, but I'm guessing from the title and what I've read that it was developed and optimized for speed. So media and quick browsing would be best on superfast Froyo.

Now games, I'm not too sure about whether games would run better, but I think that 3D games would run differently on different ROM's, I reckon that 2D games would run the same on all ROM's.

The jump from 1.6 to 2.1 wasn't really all that great, the main differences in that, would be the UI change, and a speed improvement. However the jump from 2.1 to 2.2 is pretty big jump, because there was a UI change, apps2sd, JIT (massive speed improvement) and more that I can't remember off the top of my head :p 2.2 to 2.3 was sort of big, bigger than 1.6 to 2.1 but not as big as 2.1 to 2.2, there was the big UI overhaul, and some speed improvements, and again some more things I can't remember off the top of my head.

Hope this helps! :)

Ok thank you i shall try the Speedy Froyo and compare. Im up for experimentation as the only down side is waiting for everything to set up :(

Is the superfast froyo rom applicable via restore or Install from sd?

I think your problem is that your running it in a virtual machine.. Try downloading Wine from the Ubuntu Software Centre, then open the .exe file on the Ubuntu host, and the program should run and work.

Good luck!

I already had wine installed but I have no luck running KDZ_FW_UPD.exe under it (right-click -> 'Open with Wine Windows Programs Loader').

Note that
Code:
./adb devices
'sees' the device when run from the Ubuntu terminal so I _assume_ that there's not a drivers issue.
Update: Seems msxml.msi had to be run beforehand.

I'm starting to believe that root access is the actual cause of the issues though.

At the time I thought nothing of it really because I didn't mind not backing anything up, but MyBackupRoot doesn't recognise that the phone has been rooted. I have the "Superuser" icon in the app drawer (if I open it up, there's nothing in the 'apps' tab, and in the settings tab it says that it is v2.3.6.1 and there are updates available?).

Until just now I'd not taken this any further and had just assumed that the (permanent) rooting had been applied successfully but running "Root Checker" (from the market) BusyBox is installed correctly but it cannot find the su binary in /system/xbin/su or PATH.

When I run Z4Root however, a message appears "Your device already has a 'su' binary, and so the force un-root option has been activated for you".

I'm really not sure what to believe.

I strongly suspect that having root access (or not) may be my core issue - would it be preferable for me to open a new thread or should I continue to follow this up here? What other steps can I take to confirm whether the rooting has been applied successfully? Is there any further information that would help diagnose the issue?

Many thanks :)

I'm trying out SuperFast Froyo now, just waiting for it to download, the only downside haha. You can get it here

Download SuperUser from the Market to get the su binary.. You can continue here, if it gets too off topic we'll open a new thread so we don't confuse people

SuperUser (by ChainsDD?) installed but I've noticed no change.

Attempted the update check within the Superuser app (the one that appeared originally.. no extra logo appeared when installing the above), it states that there's a new version of the su binary available. Clicking ok to install it gives the following error:

"An error occured and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."

Is this a normal error or should I be concerned?

Do what it says and flash the su through recovery

Ahah, I'm detecting infinite recursion here ;)

To get fastboot to install CM7 I must have root access, but to get root access (well, install the su binary) I need fastboot..?

Okay scratch that I lost track of what was going on :p, you don't need root access to install CM7, just to backup everything. Have you got the KDZ updater working?

Oops just realised i got distracted in that post before I had finished that line of thought (I'm typing out as I go rather than post hoc) so at the point of typing I had realised that I might need to install stuff to get it running but hadn't gotten to the point of trying it out again - I had not gotten the kdz updater working under wine. Installing the drivers / msxml.msi under wine did not work either.

Digging deeper it seems that wine needs an extra .dll to run it.
Code:
owner@owner-laptop:~/flashing/KDZ Updater CarphoneWarehouse Unlocked$ wine ./KDZ_FW_UPD.exe
err:module:import_dll Library MSVCP60.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\owner\\flashing\\KDZ Updater CarphoneWarehouse Unlocked\\KDZ_FW_UPD.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\home\\owner\\flashing\\KDZ Updater CarphoneWarehouse Unlocked\\KDZ_FW_UPD.exe" failed, status c0000135

Searching indicated that I should install winetricks to install the vcrun6 (needed to add the wine ppa first though) and this appears to have gotten it running at least.. :D

It can't seem to find/connect to the phone at the moment though (I assume due to it being under wine as opposed to Ubuntu itself so maybe now the USB drivers need to be installed..) but I'll have a play and see what I can do..

Your help is greatly appreciated btw.. awesome stuff you're doing :)

2am here now (also UK) but progress hasn't been made..

KDZ under wine is running but still cannot locate the phone. Tried installing the drivers (downloaded from running the LG Update Tool under Windows) and also the drivers given by you but neither appear to work.

Will try again tomorrow probably..

Cheers

Kinda hard, to run the exe on Ubuntu, since it would be looking at paths that don't exist, C.\Android, for example, altough there's a C:\ drive folder for WINE, but it's in if i recall correctly, /home/username/.wine/c: drive/ , or something pretty close to that, so... to make the exe file work, it would have to look at that folder.

And , well i don't know which virtual machine software you're running, but VirtualBox is really special when it comes to USB devices.

It would be easier to just make a .sh file to run on Ubuntu, and be able to install CM7 on it.

You Did run the exe file, and KDZ on your XP virtual machine, but XP still doesn't recognize your phone, right?

Also, you do know that those drivers won't be of any use there.

When installing SuperfastFroyo i had an error message saying

MD5 Mismatch!

I think i need to re-download it and also would it be possible for me to delete the data file and for it to still run properly; I don't want to lose any of my data.

Re-downloaded and still md5 mismatch....

I'm fine with my soft-mod i still think its snazzy :P

I tried SuperFast Froyo, it did run really fast as advertised, but the only problem I had, was that the messaging app wasn't working properly, it would show the thread list, then if I clicked a thread or went into settings it would just force close. So I'm back on SwiftDroid now.

XP / the KDZ updater all recognise the phone within VirtualBox and I *think* I can run shell instructions to the phone using adb (haven't tested yet) but the KDZ updater fails with TYPE_WPARAM_UPGRADE_ERROR Error Code = 502 (details / log messages are in my originial post).

i guess i'll just downgrade back to android 2.1 :( the phone is no use to me without being able to download apps from the market and being able to go on my home wifi. and on 2.1 that did work, if anyone can think of some solutions though, i would still be glad to hear them ;)

You can still dowload apps, you need the lates gapps.zip fix, which i posted on this thread a few pages back.

Your Wifi issue, are you sure you're entering the right password for your router/modem?.
