Root Upgrade Question

I know this isn't exactly related to rooting, but there is a piece that is so hopefully this belongs here.

My wife is due for an upgrade and what I would like to do is switch my phone (a rooted EVO) to her number and activate her upgraded phone on my number. Is this possible? If so, what steps do I need to take to make it happen? Do I need to unroot the EVO? Or just have a Sense ROM on it?

u shouldnt have to do anything what carrier are u on if u switch the phone yourself say over the internet or phone u shouldnt have to un root or replace any stock rom

I'm on Sprint. So I can just go online and upgrade her phone, then when it arrives switch mine to her number and then activate the new on on mine?

I'm probably going to get an EVO 3D. My wife is without a phone currently (her Hero crapped out finally) so waiting isn't an option unfortunately. I had planned on waiting for the HTC One X variant supposedly coming to Sprint, but no big as my wife and I are due for upgrades on alternating years. I'll get whatever killer phone is out next year and pass the 3D to her (as long as the phone has solitaire she is happy). I see Radio Shack has the 3D for $50 right now which is pretty awesome.

New question: Can I cancel my wife's line and then start a new line for her? I can get a 3D or an E4GT for a penny at Amazon if I start a new line. Would she lose her number? Is it even possible?

As far as applying your wife's upgraded phone to your line and your phone to your wife's, you can do that online yourself without Sprint's help. You just need to log in to your account at Sprint.com. Can't remember the exact steps but I did it a few months ago when I got tired of my Shift and switched back to my EVO 4G. Takes 5 minutes.

As far as canceling an account only to create another, I'm not following. Isn't she already eligible for an upgrade and that upgraded phone is going to you? Is it out of contract?

Keep in mind that just because someone is eligible for an upgrade doesn't mean it's at the end of the contract. They dangle that bait after a year to lock you into another year. Early termination fees may apply.

If you want to cancel a line of service only to add another, for the purpose of taking advantage of a promotional deal, I highly doubt Sprint will allow that.

Long story short, I cancelled a line that had been out of contract for a long while and added a new line to get a promotional deal. My Evo, in fact. Did it at Radio Shack in Colorado. It was RS's idea.

So I am at a crossroads. I can either do a straight upgrade and get an EVO 3D for $50, or do the cancel/add new line scam and get an E4GT for he same after paying the EFT (less than two months from the date). I am torn as to which to get. They both look to have great developer support, and I have used similar phones to both so I know how both feel in hand and how they operate. Bottom line for me I think is camera, battery life, and durability. Any thoughts on those?

Not sure what your choice is you are talking about, but cancelling my unused line that was out of contract was not any sort of scam. Sprint knew all about it.

Sorry, I use scam as a sort of slang with my coworkers for when we come up with a creative workaround for something. I know it's a totally legit thing to do, no offense intended.

My choice is between the EVO 3D and the Epic 4G Touch. I know comparisons have been done to death, but just curious about those three specific things (camera, battery life and durability).

That'll work. :)

I don't know what to tell you about the 2 phones though. ocn probably has an opinion.

Can you root the epic? what sort of dev support does it have?

The Epic has some solid support, I think Calkulin devs for it as well as some other notables. It is a Galsaxy S II variant and is really nice, but so is the 3VO. It's pretty much coming down to the three things I listed to decide it.

my only gripe is that the 3vo has a smaller screen then i'm used to with the og evo. but this phone is super sweet especially fi you root it. i can get easily 30-35 hours with heavy usage. if i go moderate then it is even longer, almost two days worth! i can overclock this thing to 1756!!!!!

the epic just did not feel that great in my hand. it felt cheap and plastic to me. the 3vo just feels solid to me. but both phones have awesome specs so the choice will be up to you.
