Root Upgrade to Stock Froyo 2.2 Guide (Includes Root instructions)

Isn't it just best to wait for the official tested ROM for your network locked mobile phone?

Yes I am a "want it now" person, but if it goes wrong, this is an expensive phone to break and for my operator to say I need to say DOH!

There's clearly a reason why it has not been released yet and that's coz it aint been tested and tested and tested.

I am a software developer and I know what the comebacks are on releasing software before they are finished/tested but please correct me if i am wrong?
 
I guess that's why I have insurance on my phone. I'm not looking to trash it and but if it breaks, I'll get a new one. It's given me a bit less worry. However, I hear it's nearly impossible to brick and Android phone.

As for why not wait? Well... Why wait? Others braver than I have tested it and even written "how to" (ex: lekky) and he seems trustworthy, if not thorough. After joining here and following his threads and helpfulness, I figured he couldn't lead me wrong. And well... he hasn't.

Plus, that's the spirit of Android. Try it out, customize it, **** with it and call it your bitch. Do something new and not simply accept that your provider's way is the ONLY way.

So far, everything works.... brilliantly. Froyo moves like lightning. Plus it has two functions I love - Update all and Hotspot Tether.

p.s. I love ****ing around with my phone... I think it's become a slight obsession since I'm on vacation. GAH! Converted an two iPhoners, which makes me happy. Hehehe...

I am seriously looking into dong this. However I am just wondering whether rooting and flashing frpyo fixes the bug of calls going to voicemail while browsing on GPRS? I am on o2 by the way.

Ok ive just made myself a gold card (thanks for the great guide Lekky) and im excited to get Froyo on my desire and experience the magic as many others here are already doing :) .

Before I do though I just want to ask a few questions to make sure I do it properly.

First off this is my first android phone and I have never rooted before so I am a little worried of ballsing up my desire.

1) I'm on Orange - any tips as I understand there are complications with rooting Orange branded devices and flashing to 2.2? What exactly are the common problems when rooting an orange phone and how can I avoid them?

2) I need to root to a 2.1 ROM first then flash to a 2.2 ROM?

3) If I do mess things up how would I revert to the stock ROM and do I have to save the stock ROM before rooting and if so how?

4) I have my phone insured so should the worst happen im ok right?

wow there so much to read.....iam a bit lost :( i got a O2 desire, do i wait for an update and how will i know theres one? or do i root it? ive had it a month now but iam reading ROm this, card that, parttion that, boot this etc........
its sad but my phone is my life if i bugger it up ill cry :(

Sorry if this has been answered anywhere but i've had a look and can't seem to find what i need. I'm currently running DeFrost 2.0f and want to update through ROM manager to DeFrost 2.5a, it's asking me whether i want to download a new radio file (necessary i assume?) and a choice of two kernels, 1267MHz and 1113MHz. Which of these do i need, or both?

yeah you need the new radio, or you'll have issues with various things.

You don't need either of the kernels. Those are optional if you wish to overclock your phone (those are both higher clock speeds than the default)

I'm currently running the 1113 kernel, but for average user it's hard to notice any speed difference, plus using an overclocked kernel may reduce battery life.
 
Thanks Lekky, One more question :) Since rooting and flashing the DeFrost ROM, i've found that often my phone 'loses' my SD card which is beginning to get really annoying considering that my ringtone is stored on the card and then rings silently when it loses the SD card. I also struggle to download app's from the market from time to time and have to re-boot in order to do so, is this something that's likely to be addressed in the 2.5a update of DeFrost?

i'm not sure thats an issue with the rom tbh. I'm guessing its the sdcard that came with the phone? If it is I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, never mind store any of my data on it.

From my personal experience, the ones that came with the phone are incredibly fickle. I gave mine to my gf (she only stores wallpaper on her sdcard) for her hero, and it constantly falls on its arse.

I've been reading that the official HTCRom is being released this weekend.
I have a branded 3 desire and I know it will take them months if they ever do bother to release the branded version so will it be possible for me to use this guide to put the official stock Rom on my phone so i'll have sense and everything?
3s modifications aren't worth keeping to be honest as they're just a homepage from what I can tell.

going thru the process now, onscreen i got a triangle with "!" in it with a lil green android guy next to it, i think i may have done something wrong or is this just part of the process?

already feels faster, the wifi hot spot is brill, and iplayer works amazingly now flash is on the phone. guys, i owe you :D
 
I have a problem rooting my HTC Desire. It's a T Mobile Branded set which i unlocked through an unlock code, now i'm running a different carrier. How do i go abt rooting the device without locking it since i lost the unlock code. I want to upgrade to Froyo 2.2

I've flashed the rooted official OTA 2.2 update, Lekky do you know if the Comfortaa_font-signed.zip file will work? I really liked the font on my defrost ROM

That is a limit of GPRS Ranjan and nothing to do with Android.
 
Anyone else finding an error when trying to record in 720p? The phone makes a buzzing sound and then reboots. Looks like a pretty big problem if it cant record in HD or any other format.

Well I finally took the plunge, and rooted my desire and installed defrost 2.7. How can I install the official Froyo 2.2 ?
 
Guys plz help .... I rooted my Desire that came with 2.1, but did not install the custom ROM, so its still running 2.1 but is rooted. Now I have recieved the message to upgrade to Official 2.2 on my phone ........need to know what will happen if I upgrade ......will I loose my rooting ..... I mean do i have to root it again ......if yes than which guide to follow .......would it be the same guide I followed to root 2.1 with bootloader HBOOT 0.83 ......

Please please guide soon as I am etching to upgrade to 2.2 ....... :-)
 
Hi I am trying to understand about the different Radio versions that are available based on the different ROMS that are available here. Does it mean the higher the number, the more stable it gets? Also. Since I downloaded one of the ROM's (DJ DROID Froyo HTC Sense - HD 720p - base 2.06 FROYO). My "Gallery" freezes. Could this have been caused by the Radio?
 
Hey guys! I just got my desire 5 days ago and I'm now "addicted" to it (this is the reason why I am here researching stuff ;)). I just have a few question since I am really a noob on Android.

Background:
I bought my Desire from a local HTC dealer here in my country. All warranty claims (if any) will be undertaken/handled by the local HTC distributor directly. The phone is not "locked" to any mobile network carrier. Phone is now running Froyo 2.2 this was done via automatic software update when phone was connected to the internet. I guess it's safe to assume that it got the update from HTC directly and not my carrier.

So my questions are:

1. If I decide to root my Desire will it void the warranty?

2. The current bootloader of my phone is 0.93. The rooting how-to's I've seen here so far are for bootloaders 0.80 and lower. Can I still use these and apply to my phone or should I wait for an updated rooting how-to?

3. My main interest on rooting is I want the app2sd function (Froyo allows this but not to all. Still, some apps can not be moved to sd) and customizing themes etc. Considering this, is it worth it to root at all? :confused:
