Help Urgent! Need information!

Sorry for the caps in the title, but, I needed to get you's attention somehow and not overlook this. Now my Huawei Ascend fell in water on tuesday night. When it did, I immeaditly check to see if all the functions were still working and whatnot and for a hot second actually, all of it was. Then I took my battery out, did the usual, tried to dry it all off with a towel. Inserted the battery back in and turned it on, but, damn the touch screen wasn't working.

So I went off the nearest Metro store around my house but as I proceeded out the door, I did a last minute check up and the touch screen actually started to touch and respond again. So and hour or so pass after thinking everything was all good, my screen just went black.

That's been like that since tuesday night. You can still turn it on, everything is responsive except for the screen. I can still accept calls and whatnot but I can't see anything as the screen is just black. Now I've been reading around and seeing people suggest using the "rice trick". Now my question to you all is: will it work? Or is it too late? And if that won't work, what else do I need to do to salvage my phone? I NEED HELP ASAP!!

Please & Thank You!

You can't hurt the phone by trying it. Did you try using a hair dryer on low to help dry it out (don't get too close with it though)? I've had a lot of phones go into the water and managed to save them, one went to the bottom of a pool (Yes I dove in fully clothed to get it). I have yet to do it with Ascend (it will happen eventually) so I can't be %100 about saving the screen as this is the first phone with a touch screen. Everything else is pretty well protected as long as you dry it out first.
If you are somewhere where it is warm take the battery out and leave it in a car for a few hours in the daytime when it's hot outside.

Your warranty is already shot because the test dots in the phones are so sensitive that just being in some really high humidity can change the color

Good luck I hope you can get your screen working. :)

Next time you drop your phone in the water just pull the battery out ASAP and dry the phone out. A hair dryer on low (not to close to the phone though) will help. Make sure that it's dry and give it another couple hours just to be safe. Then put the battery back in and try it.

Well, I had an LG (not a touch screen though) that I jumped into a pool with. One of the hottest days of summer and I was workin outside at my parents house helping my dad with something. After I got done the dogs jumped in the pool and I followed, not even bothering to strip down except for tossing my wallet onto a nearby table. Everything else on me is waterproof... Surefire flashlight, Gerber knife, keys...aw crap, well...my LG phone. 5 minutes in the pool, with the battery in, but I saved it by taking the battery out and laid about 4 sheets of paper towels in the bottom of a fryin pan. Put the phone on top of the towels, and turned the heat on as low as it would go. Left it there for a few days, and wouldn't you know it, the phone was back to it's old self except for a few screwed up pixels on the screen. But hey, beats buying a new phone. :-)

Give the fryin pan trick a try. Like I said, I dont know if a touch screen can take water, but it's worth a shot. Good luck

EDIT: now that I think about it, it took about 2 full days and I think I turned the phone over every so often too. And I forgot to mention that I had to replace the battery with a new one I bought online. It was something on the order of $15 shipped, no big deal.

You may have made a big error by not pulling the battery immediately.

It's recommended to take out the battery immediately and not turn it on until you are darn positive it's dry inside.

Using a paper towel to dry the obvious, the lowest settings on a hair dryer afterward then 24 hrs in a bag of rice like septembersrain mentioned usually works the best as it sucks out all the water and moisture inside the phone.

Patience is your friend and I'd be afraid you didn't dry it out enough. The battery voltage is what kills the wet/moist circuit boards and now it's most likely toast.

My fiance craps out iPhones (paid 50 for the first and the next 5 were free) and has dripped them with and dropped them into everything from beer to ocean water and the rice in a sock thing worked every time. In case you don't know, you can't take the battery out of an iPhone.

No rice can't fix a short, it just prevents it by drying up the water before you plug the battery back in and run electricity through water.. if it is already malfunctioning, no amount of rice will fix it.

@septembersrain - if you want to commit fraud that's fine, but don't let your uninformed nonsense get someone else in trouble. When they open it and the water damage stickers tripped, all you do by lying is make it more difficult the next time you need warranty or insurance work done.

Yeah, no.
I never said his phone wasn't burned, I figured he'd realised that by now. I just figured maybe someone could 'slpain why the fancy pants crapple doesn't need its battery removed.

I mean, everything is still working. I can still log into my stuff when I do the pattern thing but it's just that the screen is all black and I can't see stuff. The water damage sticker (i think it's the white circular sticker under the battery) is all white and doesn't that mean there isn't any damage done to it via water? What the hell is going on? Smh.

Last ditch hope (if all is working but the screen as you say) is that your LCD took a dive. If its worth it to you i would see about getting the screen replaced and hope for the best.
It should be about thirty bucks if you look around. If you have ever changed a portable device screen (such as a PSP) it should be no problem to get one for eight on eBay and put it on yourself. At worst you are out eight bucks and have a spare screen to sell off or keep for another time.
Good luck my man.

Hey Hey Hey!!! No need for that here! :( The Ascend forum is a very friendly one where we try to help one another.

September was only feeling compassion for someone who needed urgent help and for sure wasn't doing anything that should warrant 30 days in the electric chair! Chill out! LOL

Hey Fried! Did you take everything out of your phone? SD Card and all? My best advice is to take out the battery again...and the SD card. Forget the rice. Just let it sit for a couple of days so it can completely dry out. Then try it again.

If it doesn't work take it back and see if they will replace it. Chances are they will.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I deleted the posts. I really don't want anyone thinking I'd want them to commit Fraud. Just hope the OP can get his phone fixed and running. :) Perhaps he could try doing a reboot through clockwork to see if screen is working? Perhaps an install of the stock rom (or custom one?)? Would that perhaps help?

On a sidenote: If anyone here wants to talk about fraud!

I pay 60 bucks a month to Cricket for unlimited everything. This past weekend I was going to the mountains where I would be roaming. So before I left I called Cricket and purchased $15 bucks of roaming so I would be sure I could talk up there.

I just got a text from them telling me my next bill would be $100.64.

I am so PI**ED! Now...someone tell ME who is committing FRAUD!

Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!! This is enough to make me want to switch carriers!

:(

To repeat what someone else said in this thread, the FIRST thing to do in any liquid spill situation is IMMEDIATELY take out the battery, if possible. Live current with water present will ruin electronics in a heartbeat. The SECOND thing to do in this situation is drying out the electronics in question, and personally, I will wait no less than 48 hours before attempting to test it further.

FYI, if you purchased the insurance on the phone, then it won't matter whether you damaged it or not, they should replace it, as that's why you're paying for the insurance. Be sure to check the details to see exactly what it covers. If it includes liquid damage, you're golden.

And if it doesn't include liquid damage, just run over it with a car or motorcycle. And I've had one fall out while backing a bike up and heard the crunch. At least I had insurance then.

I lost mine once while riding my bicycle. It fell out of my little basket on the front. LOL When I realized it I sent myself a message telling whoever found it how to contact me. Sure nuff they did and I got it back. But it was banged up. Fortunately my insurance replaced it. Insurance is a good thing...sometimes! :P

Oh...and I did give them a small reward. :)

...Sorry.
Don't worry about it, september. All the regulars around here know your heart is in the right place. Some forums are full of people being mean like that. Thats what makes our happy little forum so special! (thanks to people like you and jazzie) SMILE!

That's why sometimes it doesn't bug me when people do commit fraud. Companies do it all the time. I can NOT believe they would do that to you! Metro will NOT let you do that. They don't just "Add" more to your account. If you put money on your account, And you use it all they cut you off. Everything is FULLY prepaid. There is no adding this or adding that. You're planning on switching right? I sure would. I'd had enough of the so called "Racking up charges" gimmick some of these companies just LOVE. You don't deserve to have to worry about all that! I mean you were gone ONE WEEKEND. How the heck did that exceed 15 dollars?!? Bullcrap. X.x

P.S I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier! My stupid data went out again, I know it's not my phone either. It's Metro. I lost it randomly when I was fully stock too (Not rooted). I have to reset up my wifi on my phone. I changed my password on the router and forgot it. *Sighs*

I was paying an absurd amount of money for insurance on this crazy rubber Kyocera phone. I remember they said if It broke in 6 months, I could get the newer version for $50 dollars. So what did I do? I tried to break it. I COULD NOT. Literally. I threw it at stuff, It just bounced. EVEN off a fireplace where I had thrown it from almost a foot away! I wish I had still had that phone, I could use it as a stress reliever.

P.S Nope, It didn't break. I ended up donating it to a worthy cause! I bet it's still out there somewhere being used by a 5 year old as a toy. XD

I would call customer service and raise hell. Maybe you can get it lowered.

Problem is, They might do it again. What if next time she's out doing something and they over-charge her again? I think it's better that's she out doing her networking shopping! I'd leave Metro if I found a service that was comparable in price (and had ACTUAL 3G coverage) and unlimited quality. You've got to the the best bang for your buck so to speak. ^^.
