Help User Reviews of The HTC EVO 4G LTE

My alarm didn't go off today for some reason but it has been. And this has happened before on my 3D but every so often if a text comes through at the exact same time I get these popups from handcent then my alarm won't go off. But I had it set for 9am and just happened to wake up at 9:15 and I set it for 9:30 to test it and it went off and even snoozed twice.

I am so far impressed with the phone, I would have liked to see them go a little bigger but nobody listens to me.

The only complaints I have are why they felt it necessary to switch the answer and deny, cancel and snooze and a few other buttons around, I have declined more than a few calls because of this. I also don't like the fact that the color tag on emails disappears after opening the email, I have five accounts on my phone and it was nice to glance and see what account it was from.

The only issue I have is with the alarm. I set the alarm, picked the ringer, turned the volume all the way up and the first morning it was a different ringer and quiet, this morning no ringer at all.

Here's my addition listing the solution to my problem: Solved, apparently you have to set the volume in settings, using the volume toggle when selecting the ringer does nothing even though it shows it is.

My alarm volume is up it's just a popup text interferes at the same time. I have my handcent set to where I get popups when I get a text.

This is similar to something i didn't care for with my OGEVO. If I was in the act of texting and someone called me it would send them to my vm without giving me the option of answering the call. It was something that I just never got around to looking into a fix but if that's still going to be the case with my LTEvo then I most certainly will. I'm not even sure why it's designed to work that way as I would think most people would value a call of a text but maybe that's just me. As far as this happening when the alarm is supposed to go off, I haven't had occasion to test that out as I don't use my alarm all that often though I can certainly understand how that could throw a wrench in ones day. Especially if your being woken up for work.

So I have had my LTEvo for 7 days now and these are my initial thoughts.

Likes:

  • Size. It's almost perfect for my tastes. I've been keeping it in my pocket as I don't have my Surface case./holster yet and if it was any larger that would make it uncomfortable.
  • Screen clarity. I love how everything looks on this screen. i.e. video, pics, text, ect
  • Sound. (with one possible exception which I mention in my dislikes) Everything sounds great so far. Music, voice(both in ear speaker and rear speaker), ringtones, ect. I haven't had occasion to listen to a lot of music yet but am hoping I can get enough mp3's on it to allow it to take the place of my current mp3 player.
  • ICS/Sense interface. Some things take a bit of getting used to but overall I think they did a good job.
  • Battery. So far, so good. I haven't come close to having to throw it on the charger mid-day but have had it down to the 15-20% range in the late evening. Once I learn Tasker enough to use it I hope to make it better at battery management.
  • Kickstand. Big improvement over the OGEVO's version.

Dislikes:

  • Texture of edge. I'm sure there is a better way of wording that but I couldn't think of any. What I mean is that while the silver band looks great it makes the phone feel like it might slip from my hand every time I go to pick it up. I'm sure I will feel better about that once it's in a case.
  • Static on Bluetooth calls. I bought a new Bluetooth headset about 2 weeks before getting my LTEvo and it worked without issue on my OGEVO but since switching over I've had about 1/3 of my calls have static. Could it be something other than the LTEvo? Yes, but it's just curious how it didn't start until I switched to this phone.
  • Network Issues. On 3 of these first seven days I've experienced an issue where I lose part of my coverage. I can still make & receive calls but my internet goes down. My weather app won't update, I can't connect via either of my browsers, and my app updates/download attempts just result in an error message saying something like "Packets are invalid". I've spoken to 2 different Sprint reps via phone & chat and each of them did or had me do something different to resolve the issue. One of them speculated that it could have something to do with the zip code I am in when this has occurred. I live & work in 2 different zip codes and so far this has only happened at work so..... I'm not sure if she was trying to say it was a tower issue but if that was it she could have just come out and said it.
I do recognize that there will never be a perfect smartphone but there is certainly a lot more to like than dislike about this device!

You may want to check the support page for your bluetooth headset and make sure it is compatible with the LTEvo. I am not having any issues at all with static over bluetooth, but I do experience it with the connection in general from time to time whether on the head unit in my truck or using the phone itself and it is usually in certain areas where the problem is persitent.

I just got this phone four days ago and I'm loving it! Everything and I mean everything is an upgrade from my old Evo 4G. My 3G speeds in the bay area are not bad at all and it seems to me like the wifi signal is much better on this new Evo compared to my old one.

Hi,well I have had every Evo,from the original thru the 3d to the new LTE. Have always liked HTC products. I have been with sprint for over 10 years and have to say there customer service has always been above and beyond with me. Well I got my Evo Lte on a preorder and first off must say it is a very good phone, and the screen is very nice, but after a week I started to have major issues with the wi-fi,power button and screen. I called sprint and they sent me to a store to swap it out. Went to the store and the manager was awesome. First let me say I have another line with a epic galaxys2 touch on it. I showed the manager the screen issues and he was amazed, when you get on a black screen and gently push on the the screen or firmly tap it looks like a blotch of light coming thru,no matter where you push or tap on the screen. He as I were amazed, the screen is very nice in its detail and definition. He bought 5 or 6 evo lte's out and we tested them all and they were all has bad if not worse. We tested out the epic touch s super amoled screen and even though there colors are a little over saturated which I don't mind, there blacks are so black it is really nice. When he and I pushed on the screen no matter how hard there was no and I mean no light bleeding or blotching on the screen what so ever. I could actually tell when pushing on the screen how much better the screen and glass were put together on the Epic Touch than the LTE. I was sad, because I really wanted to keep my evo LTE. The manager made notes and was amazed also. I called sprint and told them the issues and when they transferred me to technical support and the returns department I was informed by the lady I spoke to the even though there are over 100 people in her department,in the last 3 days she has sent over 14 return kits just by herself for the screen and wi fi issues. She was telling me a lot of the people she has spoken to said they had noticed the issues on there phone. I know it is a LCD display but Noway it should leak has much light has they do. It's like the glue they used to mount the glass didn't settle right and when you firmly tap or gently punch the pressure Is going right into the LCD panel. I am sending my phone back and the manager at the sprint store is going to hold a galaxy 3 for me when they come out in 10 days and he wants to sit down with me and we are going to compare the two phones. He wanted to get a Evo Lte,but when he saw this in all the phones we tried he has become hesitant. he told me the Evo Lte is a very good phone, and the Galaxy 3 is a beast, and the hd factor of the super amoled screen and the size 4.8 inches make for a beautiful viewing expierence with no washed out look or grayish blacks, just inky blacks and popping colors similar to but a huge step up on the epic touch even though it's not the amoled plus.thanks to everyone who took the time to read this and would luv to hear some feedback..thanks. Everyone take care

When working right, this screen surpasses the Nexus screen, including contrast. The SGS3 is the same screen, tenth of an inch bigger. The SGS3 is a worthy phone on a lot of levels, but it's not fair to compare a broken anything with a working anything else.

I can't believe that you used a lot of horsepower pushing on the screen, but I don't have that symptom on mine pressing uncomfortably hard.

Lemons happen, sorry you got one, best luck on your next move. :)

I agree with EM. Lemons are as Lemons go :p Sorry to hear that you got one out of untold number of LTEVO's sold. :( I would do some serious homework and even wait and hold on to your upgrade. SGSIII will be beast and as EM mentioned else where, SGSIII will sell like hot cakes. IMHO when the smoke clears, LTEVO will be another long lasting mark in the evolution of smart phones. ;) 2 yrs from now people prolly still have OG EVO, 3VO, and LTEVO, because each broke molds and reluctantly upgrade to LTEVO2 :D. Like most first's in life, they're hard to part with :) Simply there is a essence to EVO that works and doesn't work. That's EVO! EVO through its progression of alteration has allowed us to get our hands dirty :D People who never would root, now root!
:) Evotees, know this already! SGSIII, trendy, Iphone-ish, not iconic! IMHO ;) You want a device with stay power, Go LTEVO! Whatever your choice, nothing but luck on your next device.
If somehow this does not strike a cord for you  LTEVO is not for you. IMHO :)

This would have to be the first post I have ever completely disagreed with you on. The LTEVO isn't in the same ballpark of contrast IMO. What is the basis for your statement on contrast. The two design philosophies don't support that theory. A backlit screen will not get as black as a screen with pixels off completely which is darker to begin with. Turn the brightness up on the LTEVO high enough and the grayness and loss of color increases.

As far as which is better, yes, that can clearly be argued, but as far as contrast, I don't see where you are coming from.

I happened to take some pictures of my Epic Touch next to the LTEVO yesterday, and I think I have drank the Amoled Kool-Aid. This video shows that annoying backlit grayness.

I'm prepared to eat those words, but for the moment, the blackest looking at a glance in that video seemed to be the Motorola in the lower right -

From - AnandTech - The HTC One X for AT&T Review

For media, the screen on the LTEvo is exceptional, I was impressed at the lack of black crushing.

BTW, the LTEvo scores 58 fps in Nenamark 2, so the One X in that video must have been the international model.

BTW, many ui screens aren't black these days, they're gray.

If you can during an audition, grab Quick System Info Pro, first tab, note that the screen is largely a gray, tap on battery, observe and compare the pop up window - that's black and white.

Edit, sorry was called away.

Here's the story on white -

AnandTech - Samsung Galaxy Nexus & Ice Cream Sandwich Review

The following is a simulation of AMOLED (top) vs LCD (bottom) by my best attempt to replicate an image I view from a SGSII and my old 3vo. Best viewed on a color-calibrated desktop monitor, but note the relative differences: Overall darker AMOLED image, skewed toward blue, very saturated colors. As a photographer, I know people prefer the super-saturation. As a test, I've post-processed similar photos where I apply extra saturation to one but not the other. People almost always prefer the saturated version. And I think that's the main draw to AMOLED. I prefer a more well-rounded image.
amoledlcd.jpg

Methodology: I showed the owner of the SGSII only the SAMOLED picture on my calibrated desktop monitor, as he held his phone next to the screen. At his suggestion, he offered some final tweaks to get the image as close as possible.

Next, I gave him my 3vo and asked him to verify that the phone version appears as close to the on-screen version as possible. This guy is a photographer (like me) as well as a graphic designer (unlike me), so I trust is color/contrast observational abilities as I do my own. The above comparison is the result.

If one considers the top image to be normal, then the bottom image is gray-hazy, too bright, and leaning too warm. If the bottom is considered normal, then the top is too saturated, dark, and too cool.

But since this is my photo taken on my vacation to Greece, I know how the scene should have looked, and it's nowhere close to the SAMOLED reproduction. And that's why I don't subscribe to OLED. It still needs a lot of work, and I would never use OLED for post-processing photos or anything that demands good color reproduction.

All the hype about SAMOLED colors popping and super contrast ratios... well, it's all subjective in the end.

You know what is funny is I have a relatively recent model of car(09) but it still has a classic external antenna. If I go up to it and grab it and turn my hand 90 degrees, it will bend the antenna 90 degrees. But what is really odd is that if I do NOT do that, it performs flawlessly!!!

Seriously, thanks for the heads up. And good luck in your research and your choice!!! There's a lot of great phones out there!!!

That top picture is bad IMO, and shows the drawback in the Amoled, natural scenes look better on LCD. Darker scened movies are also better with some back lighting.

I think that top picture would be mostly accurate for the Super Amoled, which is why I'm disappointed with Samsungs decision (rationing out the improvements) not to use Super Amoled plus which in movie mode has far less saturation than the typical far over saturated pictures from previous versions. I'm not sure if the SGS3 has this adjustment, but the E4GT is far better than the original Epic (Super Amoled) in this regard. And the gap is getting smaller.

However everything else, like day to day scrolling, internet, text, and general usage of phone IMO is better on the Amoleds IMO. I look at natural scenes on my phones almost never. And even those depend on the setting of the picture as to which I prefer.

Good thing we have choices, and either one should be great.

I truly appreciate all the replies and feedback to my original post about my screen issues. I called HTC and they told me they know about this problem in a some of the phones. The term they used is the ripple effect and screen flex. On you tube there is a video which shows a phone with aroblem similar to what I ve tried to describe, the video is titled HTC one screen flex issues. I haven't decided on if I m going to wait and try a evo lte again or try the galaxy 3. I did find out the galaxy 3 has adjustments for the contrast.and also to adjust the warmth of the display between super warm.mid warm low warm and mid cool super cool and low cool. I m going to wait till next week and test both the phones.

I'm a bit late to the party, but my first impression when I got this phone was HOLY SHIZ, it's light. Even with my case this phone seems a ton lighter than my 3VO without a case. Next was wow, what a screen. Next was WOW, this thing is super buttery smooth. I'm an infiniti car guy and I remember when the G series hit, Car and Driver loved the platform, but would always say they still need to pick up on refinement. Even though the guts of the vehicles were uber solid the refinement was lacking in comparison to the BMW line. This is the leap I felt when I picked up the LTEVO. This device has the refinement that the 3VO lacked. My only issues have been some stuttering when listening to tunes through head phones on the subsonic music app and some scetchy reception at times. The reception is more the network than the phone though. Put blunty, I won't be changing out this device for a long while.
